Today in The Emperor Surprises No One... an old man rants about things.

Al.tered Car.bon is giving me hives. You know a show is bad when it makes your ally spouse have to go “well the book was published in 2002...” and I had to sit there like Oh, I’m sorry. Was I not invented until 2015???

I’mma say this one more time. TRANS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN AROUND SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME! Fuck this 2002 bullshit, Trans people were at the head of the Stonewall riots in 1969 please miss me with all that “people didn’t know” shit.

And really, that’s the root of my problem with this show. The first book might have been published in 2002 but somebody decided to write/film/produce it much more recently than that. The shortness of their imagination is what is both disappointing and frustrating. I’m only at the end of the first episode, but I’m hardcore side-eyeing this whole Takeshi Kovac situation. If what I’ve read over the wife’s shoulder is correct the character is a biracial Japanese-Hungarian man-- is it really necessary to default him to a white sleeve? Obviously I’ve never read the books, but even if the protagonist was put into a white sleeve in that, we couldn’t have gotten more creative than that for the show? Hmmmmm.

One of the producers has said something about not having had time for LGBTQIA issues is season one but being willing to touch on them if they get a second season, but I worry about how polarizing that has the potential to be.

I’m not stupid. I’m aware that the simple answer to my question of trans people in this cyberpunk future is going to be “just put their stack in whatever sleeve they want.”. But my issue with that is much the same as the “cure” problem in X-men. You have some mutants that would love a cure because their mutation is a hardship to live with, and others who look down on the idea of a cure because they’re mutant and proud-- a fitting allegory for the queer community as it was intended to be.

Transitioning medically is a journey. Not only does it take time but it takes money and it’s a path that contains hurdles. At the moment it’s not ideal, some of those hurdles are bullshit, but I happen to believe that the journey means something. There are milestones along the way that are celebrated for good reason-- like the first time a transwoman male-fails in public, or that moment when you compare a picture of yourself six months ago to a current one and realize that those microscopic changes in the mirror are greater than they seemed. Those details feel like they would be erased in this universe where bodies are no more than strange commodities. Let me say nothing about the idea that transitioning also means transforming the body you were born with into a vessel more fitting of your inner self for your own peace of mind. Are you still your mother’s son in a stranger’s “sleeve”?

Also, if Catholicism survived, what about other cultures and religions? They’re not the only people with feelings and beliefs about souls. There’s so much intersectionality to think of, a lot of which I’m not even qualified to speak on-- but that doesn’t mean I get to turn a blind eye to media that leaves them out.
