American Indeed
My friend Frank told me about this @geneluenyang book to me 5 years ago and I finally read it!
Back in college, one of my friends took a comic books class where he had to read “American Born Chinese” by Gene Luen Yang. He raved about it just enough that years later, I remembered the title and put it on hold at the library. This is the first book I started and finished this year and it is probably going to set the tone for the rest of my 2018 reading. (more…)

Reading Goals for 2018
Sam has reading goals for 2018
I’m not ashamed to say it: I don’t read that many books in any given year. I’m one of those people that takes forever to finish a book because I have to think about it. However, this year, I’m going to try to read as many books as I can. (more…)

We're Basically the Same Mexican
Finally, my review of this amazing book by @ErikaLSanchez, as well as some personal thoughts.
I don’t think any other book has quite captured my anguished, pissed, etc. side quite like Erika L. Sánchez’s “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.” It’s definitely one of the best YA books I’ve ever read. (more…)

Same, Sherman
Sherman Alexie is the first writer of color that I ever read besides Frederick Douglass, and I didn’t read him until college. He and his writing have been immensely influential and this book about his mom completely captivated me. (more…)

Brown Girls Rock
My review of "The First Rule of Punk" by @CeliaCPerez is up!
“The First Rule of Punk” by Celia C. Pérez is a book for young readers, but I don’t care! In my 26th year of life, this book is exactly what I needed to read. (more…)

Thankful for...
Thankful for…
I’m a day late, but I still don’t want to get into the whole issue with Thanksgiving Day and its misconstrued history. Instead, I thought I’d go along with the “thankful” theme and reflect on all of the joys and blessings I have encountered in my life for the year, book related and not book related. (more…)

she said she's back at it
The last time I posted was April 4, 2016. What has happened from that date until now can only be described in one word: Life. (This still relates to books. Promise). (more…)

Who's A Bad Reader?
Who’s A Bad Reader?
It may be a little obvious that I haven’t been reading this whole month. But, as always, there’s a reason. I hate to explain why I haven’t been reading because it just sounds like another excuse, but this time it’s actually a goof reason. (more…)

Emma Watson Has A Book Club
Emma Watson Has A Book Club
Emma Watson starting a book club just makes sense. She’s spend most of her life so far playing a character that loves books, she attended and graduated college with a degree in English literature, and she’s overall a smart woman that wants to share books and ideas. I think this is such an important action for her to take, especially because of her celebrity status. (more…)

New Year, Same (but better) Me
New Year, Same (but better) Me
Yup, that’s Kanye West. It’s been a minute, but a lot has happened. And with a new year upon us, I can’t promise that I’ll become a “new” me, even when it comes to my book life. (more…)

Mentors
Like a lot of people of color, I had difficulty finding mentors when I was a student. I had some really amazing teachers all throughout my schooling, but I never had a close relationship with any of them. There was no one to help me, no one to talk to, and no one to relate to. And our backgrounds had a lot to do with it. That’s some of my favorite writers of color have become what I like to call…

And She's Back
Read about why I've been gone for so long and try not to yell at me
Wow. Muchísimas gracias (many thanks) to everyone for stopping by and reading my blog while I’ve been away! I really appreciate everyone for taking the time to check out this little blog of mine. As you can probably tell, I’ve been absent for a couple of months. But, as always, I have excuses. So many excuses. (more…)
