Evermore- Sara Holland Book Review

I’m going to jump into this by simply saying that I absolutely adore Liam’s character development. There is nothing better in a book than a beautifully written character development. It makes you feel right at home and like you really know who these characters are and what makes them do what they do. Also for me the story itself has blossomed into something significantly more enjoyable than the first in the series. At the moment, I am very interested in where the story is going to go. As a person who really enjoys learning about new things I really liked that Liam was given this trait to love learning. I like how Jules finds out about herself by simply learning a past undiscovered to her.

The romance in this book, or lack thereof, follows a pattern of hurting someone you care about in fear of getting too close to them. Some say to love is to destroy and this book really seems to go by that saying. Jules is scared to get attached to anyone because she fears that will put them in danger. While this little plot is done many times when it comes to romance in fantasy books I am never annoyed by it simply for the fact that in a way I can relate to what it’s like to become too attached too quickly.

If you have ever read a YA book fantasy or not you would know that lots of them have a plot twist centered on betrayal. I have read many, many books and while there are still times when a plot twist shocks me to the core most of the time I can sense when one is coming. There is a betrayal plot twist in this book and the led up to it is strong but the betrayal was not exactly what I expected which is what I like.

When it comes to the ending I can’t say I was shocked because I wasn’t. What I expected to happen happened and there weren’t really any surprises there. I did enjoy the book and the ending and I think the ending of the book did really well with also ending the duology. Left the characters with a happily ever after as one would expect in a YA book. Not that all of those get happy endings.

May Wrap Up

Another month gone and with it another month of me failing to actually post book reviews. My problem is I finish a book mostly right before I go to bed so I do not have the energy to type up a review. I am going to try harder this month and once again hope I get it done. Without further ado lets get into the books I read this month.

1. The Shadow Hour- Melissa Grey

2. The Savage Dawn- Melissa Grey

The last 2 books in the girl at midnight trilogy. The last book in the series killed me but overall it was a really good series.

3. Invisibility- Andrea Cremer

I do not typically enjoy contemporary novels simply for the fact that a lot of them feel really similar. This is one of the few contemporaries that I really enjoyed because of the unique way it was written. The ending really surprised me but I still liked the ending.

4. Homegoing- Yaa Gyasi

A step out of my comfort zone. Really enjoyable and also really good at teaching you about things in a way that is interesting and unique. Since reading this book I have been very open to reading more books out of my comfort zone.

5. The Dreamers- Karen Thompson Walker

This book really drew me in and I could not put it down. I finished it in one day. I will say that I was very disappointed by the ending. It felt like I wasted my day reading the book.

6.Nimona

this is a graphic novel and for the life of me I can not remember who wrote it. The story was very cute and easy to read.

7. Monstress vol 1

Decided to give another graphic novel a try. The story was very well written and the art was beautiful but I wasn’t a huge fan of the story line. It just wasn’t my style of writing.

8. A darker Shade of Magic- V.E. Schwab

Another series that I fell in love with. I actually worked through this series pretty quickly and had it finished within 2 weeks. The characters are wonderful and the world it was set in was so unique.

9. For Darkness shows the Stars- Diana Peterfreund

A really good book, it is a part of the series but I really liked the specific characters and the other books surrounded around this world feature people from a different time so I wasn’t particularly interested in reading the others.

10. Everless- Sara Holland

I am currently on the second book of this series and am still uncertain on how I feel about them.

11.Somebody- Nancy Springer

A really quick read with a unique story line. I have never read a book quite like this one and I doubt I will ever find one like it. This author writes very unique stories.

12. City of Ashes- Cassandra Clare

A reread I read this first book back in March and I’m slowly making me way through the series again when I find the time.

For Darkness Shows the Stars- Diana Peterfreund

Beginning this book one of my first thoughts was that Kai/Malakai feels incredibly selfish and stubborn. I can see good points on both sides of the story but I feel that Kai is holding on to the past too much and his taking out his personal feelings on everyone else because he is scared of the way he feels. The second thing I noticed is that this book is amazing and almost impossible to put down. 2 hours flew by. The wonderful story really makes up for the fact of how much Kai drives me crazy. Continuing on in the book I have come to realize that Elliot has not made the best choices in her life. She has never done anything wrong really, but she had done something wrong to herself. She spent her time growing up taking in and believing what people have told her about the morals of the world but it seems that she has never taken the time to think of what she actually believes to be true. She thinks she has to take care of everything when in reality she should be doing what she wants to do because you cannot take care of everyone at the same time. I also learned that this book has a pretty deep meaning that really makes you think about your own morals. I really enjoy how it is a really good story that makes you think at the same time without you really even realizing that you are deep in thought about your own world and life. As if it couldn’t get any better the amount of twists and turns in the plot leaver you wondering on who you can really trust. I went back and forth on what characters I liked and what characters made me angry. This book seems to be a masterpiece on making the reader run around in circle trying to figure out who to trust. This book was amazing and I believe that I will be stuck for some time trying to find a book that is good enough to compare to this one. This is a 5 star book hands down and I urge for anyone to read it.

April Wrap Up

The end of April is here and I have to say that I read a very large number of books for one month. I’ve read so many that the beginning of the month felt like ages ago. Let’s just get to it.

1. Obsidio- Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I started the month by finishing the illuminae files series. I mostly enjoyed the series but I was more than ready to move on.

2. The Heir- Kiera Cass

I can barely remember this book so I’m not too sure if I really enjoyed it. I do have a review up so if you really want to know my opinions you can go ahead and check that out.

3. This is the part where you laugh- Peter Brown Hoffmeister

This was a very different book but it did have features that I enjoyed quite a bit

4. The Crown- Kiera Cass

once again I am not really sure what happened in this book it feels like so long ago since I read it.

5. Untold- Sarah Rees Brennan

I had a really hard time with this series I convinced myself to read this and then I thought I would read the 3rd book too but I ended up turning it in without even reading it.

6. Life as we knew it- Susan Beth Pfeffer

This was a really good book and I could barely put it down. I really liked the way it was written and it was a quick and easy read.

7. Birthmarked- Caragh M O’Brien

Another great book and also something I would usually be reluctant to read. I am really glad I picked it up. I really did enjoy this book but I am choosing not to continue the series because in my opinion I think it will ruin my expectations

8. White Cat- Holly Black

I have read so many Fantasy based books in a female perspective so it was a really big change to read an entire book in a male’s perspective. I really enjoyed it and wish more authors would give us more male role characters. I liked the idea of the book but I just didn’t find it as good as I thought it would be.

9. Red Scrolls Of Magic- Cassandra Clare

This was my most anticipated read of the month because I love Cassandra Clare and the Shadowhunters world. I can say that it did not disappoint and it stood up to all the expectations I held in my mind. I think that this will be a good series when all of the books are out and I can’t wait for the future of the story.

10. Anna and the French Kiss- Stephanie Perkins

I usually have a hard time with contemporary books because I really like the idea of fantasy worlds but this was a very nice book that had just the right amount of romance. I would recommend this to a friend.

11. Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree- Adobi Nwaubani

This month was the month of trying new books and I am so glad I gave this one a read. This is the closest thing to nonfiction that I have read in years and I am so so glad I did. This story is one I will never forget and I urge anyone who hasn't read it yet to give it a go.

12. The Darkest Part of the Forest- Holly Black

By this point of the month I was really itching for a good Fantasy book because it had been a while and I was missing them. This was a spectacular book that had the perfect story for one book. I really enjoyed the ending and was relieved that it didn't leave me itching for more.

13. Under the Never Sky- Veronica Rossi

Right about now I hit a huge reading slump. It took me forever to get into this book simply because I just wasn't really reading at a good pace. I would read maybe 10 pages a day for about 5 days. Once I actually sat down and read for an hour I became completely involved in this story. I am definitely going to finish out the series.

14. The Dead and the gone- Susan Beth Pfeffer

15. This World we live in- Susan Beth Pfeffer

I needed to finish this series because the books were due. I was planning on reading the 4th but the perspective change really bothered me and I couldn't really get into it so I did not finish it.

16. Beastly- Alex Flinn

I wasn't sure that I was going to like this one because it felt like i had already read a ton of Beauty and the Beast retellings. I was wrong this was a really enjoyable quick read.

17. The Girl at Midnight- Melissa Grey

This was a friend recommendation and as always she knows what I like. I fell in love with this book and am considering a review. This is another series that I will definitely finish considering I already have the next 2 books.

Untold- Sarah Rees Brennan Book Review

I have a motto that pretty much any book reader should have. Life is too short to read books you don't like. When I read Unspoken the first book in this series it took a lot of effort for me to read and any other time I would have not even thought about reading the second book but something just made me get it anyways. I am so so glad that I did too because when I read Untold, suddenly I fell in love with series.

My favorite thing about it is simply the dialogue. I love sassy or snarky characters and Brennan sure does provide in that department. I just loved anything that basically any of the characters said. On the subject of characters I loved how different most of them are. It is always so refreshing to get characters so unlike any that you have read about before. This book might not had much when it came to actually plot but I loved it nonetheless and really liked the character development it had.

The Heir- Kiera Cass Book Review

How do I even begin to describe my feelings for this book. It was a good read and I did enjoy it like most books I read. I love how the author can create a whole new character but at the same time still give her traits that make her relatable to her own family members. I think it’s interesting to read about a royal person who is so full of themselves when so many are made up to be selfless. I think it is fun to read about a princess soon to be queen who is a little spoiled and needs to realize who she needs to become.

I also really enjoy to see the selection with the switch of the genders. It puts an interesting twist and makes the reader understand the struggles of being in charge of deciding who your future spouse would be. While I tend to love the author for new experiences at the same time I always feel a bit of frustration in a good way. Whenever I read these books I have become scared of being too attached because Cass is known to me for killing off some of my favorite characters. I am scared of the possibilities of who could die but also very excited to see where the selection goes since there is no obvious leader like in the previous 3 books.

Obsidio Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff book review

It’s only been one day of April yet I have already finished a book.

I loved this whole series because of 2 factors. One being that it is actually a quick read even with nearly all the books being 600 pages. This is really nice because I like getting books out of the way quickly sometimes. The second one is the fact that you never really know what is coming when you are reading them. You start to believe one thing and then next thing you know the complete opposite is happening.

I love plot twists so this book was a really good one for me. It even had a really good ending which is something I am always a little worried about when I am finishing up a series. I really like where this one left the story. It gave it a happily ever after that was realistic and left you feeling good about it.

O.W.L.s Magical Readathon 2019 TBR

Happy April everyone! Like usually I just found out about this readathon last night but I am super happy to be doing it since I am a huge Harry Potter fan. I will be reading all of the subjects except for Ancient Ruins. Anyway enough talk and lets get to it. (If you want to learn more about this readathon look it up on youtube for information)

Arithmancy- is to read a book written by more than 1 author. It just so happen to work out that I already had a book from the library that worked for this. I will by reading Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Astronomy- Read a book with the word Star in the title. I almost forgot about this one because I read right over it but for this prompt I will be reading a Sliver of Stardust by Marissa Burt.

Care of Magical Creatures- Read a book with a land animal on the cover. For this I will be reading White Cat by Holly Black.

Charms- Read an adult book. For this I will be reading Sail by James Patterson and Howard Roughan.

Defense Against the Dark Arts- Read a book that starts with an R. For this I kind of made the book fit because I know I will be reading it this month anyway. So I am reading The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare and just omitting the word the at the beginning of the title.

Divination- Read a book set in the future. I will be reading Birthmarked by Caragh M O’Brien. The first words in the description of this book are “in the future” so I am certain this fits.

Herbology- Read a book with a plant on the cover. For this I will be reading This is the Part Where You Laugh by Peter Brown Hoffmeister. There is a plant on the cover I promise, it is a little weed in the crack between the sidewalk.

History of Magic- Read a book published at least 10 years ago. I will be reading Where are the Children by Mary Higgins Clark.

Muggle Studies- Read a contemporary book. I will be reading Anna and The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins.

Potions- Read a sequel, I will be reading Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan.

Transfiguration- Read a book with a red cover or with sprayed edges. For this I will be reading Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody.

That concludes my list and I can’t wait to get to reading these and hopefully actually leaving reviews this time.

March Wrap up

Once again I failed at doing any reviews for the entire month of March. As much of a slacker as I seem I actually did really well with reading in March and read more this month than any other with a grand total of 15 books. We can thank spring break for this huge amount of books where i had an entire week to basically just read. My count for my yearly reading challenge is currently at 42/150. I am still ahead of schedule according to good reads so yay me anyway let’s get to the main point of this.

1. Harry Potter and the half-blood Prince- J.K. Rowling

I actually finished the Harry Potter series this month which honestly already feels like ages ago.

2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- J.K. Rowling

3. The Selection- Kiera Cass

a new series I read the first book so many times when I was around the age of 14 and 15 so I was pretty excited to finally read the rest of the series.

4. Illuminae- Amie Kaufman

Another new series as well. I really liked this book simply because it was different. The book felt like an exciting adventure and I really loved how the author could pull of plot twist after plot twist with almost no expectations

5. The Black Key- Amy Ewing

This book was the end of a series that I started in February. The first 2 books were amazing and I could not put them down. This last one followed the pattern of being really good but the ending was very anticlimactic and left me yearning for more information on where the community in the book would do next.

6. A living Nightmare- Darren Shan

I have heard so many things about this series and decided to give it a try. I went into it with an opened mind knowing it had the reading level of a middle school aged book. The first one was quite good and led me to want to continue the series.

7. Cruel Beauty- Rosamund Hodge

This hands down was my favorite book of the entire month. I loved the use of greek mythology and the similarities to beauty and the beast. Once I picked it up I could not put it back down and finished in one day. The story was so good and I was actually disappointed when I found out it was a stand a lone book. Don’t get me wrong it was a very good stand a lone book and had a good ending. I was just under the impression that this was a series.

8. Shadows- Paula Weston

This book was a bit hard for me to get into and even when I did I found myself just not really liking the direction it went in and in the end I decided against reading the rest of the series. Life is too short for books you don’t like after all.

9. Unspoken- Sarah Rees Brennan

Another one I had a hard time getting into but I did kind of like it towards the end. I am going to give the second book a chance in April and see if I find myself enjoying it even more.

10. The One- Kiera Cass

Really enjoyed this book except for the amount of back and forth from the female protagonist. Otherwise great book.

11. The Elite- Kiera Cass

Once again there was a lot of back and forth but this one also had quite a bit of plot twists. This book actually seriously made me cry so watch out because this author can break some hearts.

12. Gemina- Amie Kaufman

13. Grave Mercy- Robin Lafevers

Hard to get into but soon I found myself half way done with the book. I really liked the historical aspect but I don’t really feel the need to continue on with the story.

14. The Vampire’s Assistant- Darren Shan

My 2nd and last book in the series. The series is rather interesting but the writing is not really my preferred style so I will not be finishing out the series.

15. City of Bones- Cassandra Clare

One of my favorite books in the whole world. I love the shadowhunters world and just needed a book to read til I got my library books so I just read a familiar friend.

February Wrap-up

I am a terrible human being and totally forgot to review any books for the whole month of February. I really hope to do better this month but I do know each and every book I read so I can still do a wrap up.

1. Cinder- Marissa Meyer

I mostly enjoyed this book but at the same time I wasn't really into the whole plot line and some of the characters

2.Fathomless- Jackson Pearce

This book was interesting and I was super excited to read it because I had never read a fantasy book that featured mermaids before. I really enjoyed the story the only problem I had with it was that I didn’t enjoy the ending.

3. A Court Of Mist and Fury- Sarah J. Maas

As this was one of my friends favorite authors I vowed to read it and I actually turned out to really enjoy this series and I’m super sad the newest one doesn't come out til 2020.

4. A Court Of Wings and Ruin- Sarah J. Maas

5. A Court Of Frost and Starlight- Sarah J. Maas

6. Words We Don’t Say- K.J. Reilly

In February I took a small break from fantasy and read 2 books from a different genre. I really liked the story and lessons from this book and it was nice to read a book with a feel good ending.

7. Little Do We Know- Tamara Ireland Stone

another non fantasy YA book. I really enjoyed the story and the ending in this one was well but at this point I was starting to miss fantasy quite a bit.

8. Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire- J.K Rowling

so naturally my next book was Harry Potter to try and finish re-reading the series

9. The Price Guide to the Occult- Leslye Walton

I got a little distracted from Harry Potter after a trip to the library. This book just looked really cool and I’m super glad I read it as I really enjoyed it and finished it in 2 hours.

10. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix- J.K. Rowling

and finished the month with Harry Potter.

Update

My birthday was yesterday and I had a really jam packed weekend so I haven’t read in about 3-4 days I don’t actually remember how long it’s been. Starting tonight I’m going to try and get back into the habit so I don’t get out of doing it.

Fathomless- Jackson Pearce Book Review

Another book in my fairytale read a thon. I was super excited about this one because of the feature of mermaid like creatures. I have read many fantasy books as that just happens to be my favorite genre, yet in all those books I read I never got around to anyone quite like this one.

One of my favorite things about this book is simply the fact that the word mermaid is never actually used. I just think its fun that most people’s brains would just jump straight to the word mermaid but its simply not needed in this book. I really liked the concept of the triplet sisters and I thought it was cool that they had these powers that really had nothing to do with the “mermaid” plot of the story.

They way that the main girl Lo was created is also a really cool concept that I do not see too often. It was a really good read with all kinds of little aspects that made the story even more fun. Towards the end there was several moments where I had no clue what was going to happen. Every time I had an idea the whole thing changed again and I really like books that keep me guessing it keeps things fun. The ending was quite simple like lots of happy endings which was probably the point considering it was a rewrite of a fairytale so I didn't take that too much in to my opinion.

Overall I would give this story a 4 out of 5 and would recommend to anyone who loves a good fairytale.

Cinder-Melissa Meyer Book Review

This week I started the fairytale readathon, I was super excited to start this because it was one of those things that seemed right up my alley. I chose to read this book mainly because my sister already owned it and also because I kind of wanted to give it a try as it was something I did not think I was going to like.

I really loved how similar yet completely different the story was compared to the Disney version of Cinderella. I also really liked that it was set up in an asian city as I have never really read a book set up in a place like this setting. With that said I had a lot of hopes for this book.

I liked the idea of the book but for some reason I just couldn’t find myself enjoying it immensely and I’m not really sure why. It just didn’t feel complete to me when I was reading it. I also didn't really like the whole cyborg concept, not because there were cyborgs in the story but merely because of how little detail there was about the cyborgs themselves. It was kind of more about saving the population when I was curious on how it came to be the way that it was.

I did not like the ending very much, it wasn’t even much of a cliffhanger but it just felt sort of incomplete like the whole book itself. I do know that this story is a part of a series and that very well could help with all the problems I felt there was but I am personally not going to take the time to find out due to the fact that I have lots of other books to read.

January 2019 Wrap Up

My very first monthly wrap up yay!! It has been a hot minute since I even posted a review but I slacked off with a couple of books because I wasn’t in the mood to write a review when I finished them. All of that aside let’s get to the main focus and talk about the books I read this month.

1. Love and War- Melissa de la Cruz

A great book in a great series. I would definitely recommend for anyone who really loved Alex and Eliza’s love story but be warned it is not like Hamilton and is more of a historical romance fiction

2. Dreamfall- Amy Plum

This book was not for me I had no clue what it was really about and therefore did not even know it was in the horror genre. A genre I don't particularly enjoy. Even if I were to like the genre I don’t think the book would have been for me considering it wasn’t even slightly scary.

3. The Jewel- Amy Ewing

If you know anything about me I love fantasy dystopian type novels. I really enjoy learning about different cultures and countries so it would make sense that I would love to read about fantasy worlds that do not exist. The Jewel is the perfect example of something like this and I would recommend if you enjoy those type of books.

4.Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban- J K Rowling

This one is just obviously a great book. I read the series before and now I am reading it again simply because I want to. It is taking me awhile but I will get there eventually. If there even is a person out there who hasn’t read this you certainly need to give it a read.

5. The Oddling Prince- Nancy Springer

As a fantasy lover I have read my fair share of books that involve fae as it seems to be a pretty popular category recently. Before reading this book I took a break from books like that because I have read so many. This one was very unique and no other book was quite like it. I really enjoyed it and it was nice to read a book that was not part of a series for once.

6. Truly Devious- Maureen Johnson

This was one of those books that you just try out cause it seems like maybe you would like it. It turns out I did like it quite a bit more than I was expecting. It was a very good read for a genre I don't tend to enjoy very often. I haven’t decided 100% if I will continue the series but I have time to decide.

7. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before- Jenny Han

I watched this movie on Netflix and the second I realized it was a part of a book series I immediately added it to my to read list on goodreads. I really love watching movie adaptations first that way I can’t be too upset about the movies not matching the books because I haven’t read the book yet. It was such a cute little romance book. It felt good to take a break from all the fantasy and just read a realistic and somewhat relatable book.

8. The Passage- Justin Cronin

I wanted to read this book in honor of the tv show that just came out. It seemed like a good idea to begin with but honestly I ended up regretting it. The book was huge which was kind of awful in the long term because all the time I spent on one book. It wasn't really the page count that made it long but instead the amount of words on each page. The ending was really a let down and to me the book is not really worth the read.

9. The White Rose- Amy Ewing

Since I loved the Jewel so much I decided I wanted to read the rest of the series and actually managed to get to it in the same month which is a pretty big deal. Of course I continued to really love the story and plan to finish it whenever I get the chance.

10. Tell the Wind and Fire- Sarah Rees Brennan

I wanted to read this book simply because the author helped write some books by Cassandra Clare and that is my favorite author. I am really glad I read this book, I liked it a lot. The ending was pretty open but not in a bad way. It left room to make you wonder but I am not going mad on what could happen. Which is a good thing considering it is a stand alone book.

11. A Court of Thorns and Roses- Sarah J Maas

I read the Throne of Glass series by my friends request and really liked it so naturally she suggested I read this series too. I agreed because it was the same author and had a similar story to the other series. When reading the description I wasn’t really sure about it but it turned out that the book was really good and I do plan on reading it even if only half of it is out. I will probably be in it for the long run.

That’s it 11 books in one month which is extremely impressive for me. I am super proud of myself and really hope I can keep it up or there is not way I will be able to read 150 books in one year. I have faith though so hopefully I get there.
