Before Amazon (not so long ago), before even the internet:   we did not die or lie in waste because of our inability to procure our meds and equipment.  Our cupboards were stocked, the books we needed were easily available through one of our several neighborhood bookstores.  We picked things up, chatted with the merchants, and we still had more spare time than we do now!  Like most all the technological services developed over the past few decades, Amazon fulfills only the need which it has itself created.

Social media has been blamed for ruining our democracy, shortening our children’s attention spans and undermining the fabric of society. But through it, I was able to be with Paulina out in the world again, to see what she sees, to virtually stand beside her and witness the people and places she moves through, in nearly real time. Not in a parent-policing role, but in a wonderful-world sort of way.
