DIY: Tiny Reservoir Master Cylinder

So maybe you read this thread from chopcult. http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1285  

Now you want to know how to do this to your xs650 front brake:

Let me teach you some things, child!

MATERIALS

Tubing. I used Tygon tubing: http://speeddealercustoms.com/product/3-feet-high-octane-14-fuel-line-gas-line-harley-chopper-bobber-yellow/ 

Master cylinder. I used this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231259055499?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 

Brake fluid (dot 3 for mine)

(Optional) 1/4 threaded hose nipple 

(Required) Beer

TOOLS

Something to cut plastic (e.g. a dremel).

PROCEDURE

Cut the elbow off as shown.

You can see the bits of the elbow i cut off on the table in this pic below.

2. Squeeze the tube onto what's left of the elbow and mount the master cylinder to your bars.

3. Screw the 1/4 nipple onto your brake fluid container. This makes it easier to fill your tube with brake fluid.

4. Bleed your brakes out like an emo kid. You can find out on your own how to do this, but the sequence is open, squeeze, close, release.

5. Cap it off with a stainless steel bolt a little bigger than the tube. My tubes inner diameter is 1/4. A metric m7 bolt fits very nicely.

6. Drink a beer. This should probably be step 1. 

7. Have fun. Look like a boss.

When I moved to Chicago, I had to leave my scoot back in cali, though, I did bring my spare motor. With that being said, I'm looking for an xs650 in the Chicagoland area.

Update on the ol' girl

No major changes. She's running smoofh. So smoofh i bought another xs650 engine. It's an '82 or '83. Spine breaking compression. Relatively complete. For a steal at $150. This is going to be fun!

She's tight.

Air tight. I know because I did a compression test:

1. Get a compression tester. I rented this from Autozone for free. All they ask is you put $40 as down payment. When you return it, you get the $40 back. 

2. Remove the spark plug from the engine side you want to test and screw in the compression tester as shown below.

3. Ground the spark plug cap using jumper wire to the engine.

4. Make sure she's neutral.

5. Do not turn her on which means continue to be fat and ugly.

6. Crank and hold her to full throttle.

7. Kick her over a few times until the gauge needle stops moving further (4-6 times).

8. Looks to be about fine. Somewhere between 140-150 is good.
