i don't know how many people there are that follow this blog but not my main account, but i did want to update this blog as well.

we said goodbye to boone yesterday after a brief battle with renal lymphoma. he passed peacefully and i'm glad he's no longer suffering, even if it did break my heart to let him go. we had almost 9 wonderful years together.

i stopped updating this blog once i got the second dog and it became too bothersome to juggle, but i am still active on my main, @kangals , if you wish to follow me there. i will be leaving this blog up - i can't bear the thought of deactivating it.

thank you all for following over the years, and for sharing in the love i had for my boy.

I’m trying to adopt a retired greyhound! I’m learning a lot about them I didn’t know before! I live in Colorado so it gets pretty cold, never really below 0, but under 20degrees for at least 30 days a year. I know my hound will need a jacket, but what about hats and boots? Will this make a big difference in keeping her warm or is it really just the jacket that’s needed?

If the jacket is one that has a snood/neck-warmer built in (example) I wouldn’t worry about buying a separate one or a hat. If it doesn’t have one though I’d probably buy it, greys tend to have very thin hair on their necks so they’ll lose heat fast (plus the lil earsies can be tucked in so they don’t get too cold). 

For boots you don’t need to do anything fancy - most of the ones that are actually warm and insulating are super clunky and hard to keep on IME - but I do recommend Pawz boots . I really like Pawz, because they’re waterproof but also super thin, so most dogs walk in them just fine and they stay on really well. The boots are less for the cold and more as a barrier against ice and salt. Makes a huge difference in how far I can walk Boone, especially in the city with salt everywhere. They also can be used in the summer to protect against the hot tarmac. Don’t use them for running around though, they’re rubber so they will shred.

Greys will vary in their temperature tolerance but Colorado weather sounds fine, normally I break out the coat when it’s about 40 or lower but your dog will let you know when/if it’s needed. Boone does really well in cold - I’ll double-layer him with his jammies under the coat if it’s single digits or below - but hates heat, for example (and he’s from Florida, for god’s sake). But I know my friend @teddythegreyt‘s Teddy is happy to go for long walks regardless of how hot it is. I’m biased because I also like cold and can’t stand hot weather lol but IMO it’s pretty easy to keep them happy in the cold. 

(I’d also recommend a pair of light jammies for wearing in the house, lest you constantly be bothered by your dog staring pointedly at you whilst curling up into a tiny ball and looking put out. It’s 68 degrees in the house god damn Boone get over yourself)
