Trans Voices, Trans Bodies, Trans Souls
Over the weekend, I made a post on fb which I suspected might be taken down, but hoped it wouldn't be. It didn't come as a surprise when it was.
I wanted to create a message, that trans people should be boldly, unapologetically visible to each other, and to the public.
I want there to be free and ample space somewhere between political activism and prn for trans people to just exist.
I want trans bodies to be celebrated in the media and the arts for what they are: beautiful human bodies.
I want trans people to be celebrated for who they are: beautiful human beings.
I want trans people to know with unshakeable certainty that they matter, and that they belong.
It doesn't matter that it was my post that got taken down. It's impossible to take it personally when we're all viewed so impersonally.
But I do think it matters for me to try to persist in using what voice, what ability I have to help trans people to be seen and heard by the society to which they belong.
I owe a great debt to That Trans Gothic Rebel for managing to preserve a crucial part of the lost text of that post, which is as follows:
"There is a battle going on at the moment: for recognition, for liberty, for dignity, for equality. Our place in society has become a political football. It has become a matter of debate.
I don't believe that the battle can be won through appeals to logic and reason, or through clever rhetoric. I've been around humans Iong enough to know how little effect those have.
It is ultimately a battle for empathy - a battle of the soul. Even people who don't mean us any direct harm, sadly, often fail to see us as human beings."
