“Excruciating.” Elektra grumbled, but his hand on her shoulder was enough to have her stepping in closer to him after a mere moments hesitation.
Matt smiled anyway, leaning forward to place a light kiss on her cheek. “I’m sure it was.”

“Excruciating.” Elektra grumbled, but his hand on her shoulder was enough to have her stepping in closer to him after a mere moments hesitation.
Matt smiled anyway, leaning forward to place a light kiss on her cheek. “I’m sure it was.”
Natasha raised an eyebrow. She had known that, but with Matt being back in New York it had just slipped out. Sure things were different, but this just felt strange. “I highly doubt that Matthew. Unless you’re leaving suggestions for yourself, in which case I have every confidence that you do, indeed, read those.” She snorted. “Don’t forget I know you pretty well.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Besides, I’ve only read rave reviews of my work and conduct.” He added, his expression not shifting from one of absolute seriousness. “And you should know that I’ve always only done the greatest work.” He mused, smirking ever so slightly.
“Oh. I’m sorry. I forgot, Hell’s Kitchen invented crime. I wouldn’t know anything about it. Hell’s Kitchen isn’t even the most dangerous neighborhood in Manhattan, much less New York City, much less the United States. I live part-time in Gotham. I think I know crime.” she said, stepping around him.
“Might as well, have.” Daredevil murmured under his breath. “You know Gotham Crime. Or even intergalactic threat level crime. You don’t know Hell’s Kitchen.” He added with a sneer, arms crossed over his chest, turning to face Zatanna as she walked around him.

“No, you wouldn’t understand anything about this city. Hell’s Kitchen is never going to get better. There is no cure for the disease rampant in the streets. All I can do is manage it to minimise the danger - something I can’t do with you sticking your goddamn nose into everything.”

“Foggy and I aren’t on speaking terms, Natasha. But I take every concern and suggestion very seriously. So whatever you need to say - feel free to jot it down and leave it in the box.” Matt replied, his voice steady and serious as he ran his fingers along the file on his desk, reading it carefully.
“Fine.” Elektra knew he wouldn’t let up, not with his stubborn belief that he could fix her, that he could mend whatever was broken inside of her. “Help me.”
“See, now was that so hard?” Matt asked with a smug smirk, putting his hand on Elektra’s shoulder.
Elektra was silent for moments before whispering, “I don‘t know how.” Vengeance had been her life for so long, the prison in which she was trapped. How did she go about normality once more?
“Don’t give me that, Elektra. You’ve got me and Foggy to help you out. All you need to do is ask.” Matt returned, pointing an accusatory finger at her, “Hell, you don’t even need to ask. I’ve been trying to help you since the day you came back into my life.”
“That’s the thing though, Natasha and I aren’t the same. You want who I was in college, Matthew. I can’t turn back time and be her again.”
“No, but you don’t have to be an assassin anymore. That’s what you don’t seem to get, Elektra. Nat moved on. Melvin moved on. You keep acting like nobody could ever move on, yet I know tons of people who have redeemed themselves.”
“Well, why didn’t you say so in the first place?”
“You’re the one always saying you can’t change - it’s not my fault you can’t deal with it when I point out someone else who has.”
“The thing about opportunities, Matthew, is that they expire. I made my choices, I went down certain paths that I can’t just walk back from. I’m a killer - I can’t take that back just because I want to.”
“Natasha did it.”
“If you didn’t come in here and have to turn on the macho act, I’d be more likely to trust you.” she pointed out. “You have to come in here and prove something, piss all over your territory, what am I supposed to believe you’ll do to someone else?” she said. Zatanna stepped around him. “Sure I’ll help you. You didn’t actually ask for help by the way. You came in here to tell me about your city this, and your city that. And then you accused the people I work with. The people I see every day, the people who are my family of working for the Kingpin. If you’d just said, “Gee Zatanna, I’d like some help taking down this smuggling ring. I’d have leapt to help you.” she reached into her purse and dug out a compact. “Rorrim wohs em eht relggums.” The image appeared in the reflection of the mirror, “It’s one of the stage hands that works for the theatre. Guy named Kent Richards.”
“I’m not asking you to help me take down the ring. There is no taking down the Kingpin. Trust me, I’ve tried. And the one time I succeeded, it turned out that I was only trading in bad for worse. He’s a necessary evil, and the only reason I came to you was for information. Not for what you can do for me or my city.” He retorted, turning to face the mirror for the sake of masking his identity even though there was no way for him to know what was appearing in it. He knew from her heartbeat that she wasn’t hiding anything. So he simply gave another grunt, flicked his billy club to release the grapple, disappearing into the shadows.
“First off, I offer great medical insurance. Second off, if you’re telling me a good person pressed into a bad situation, and being exploited is the one you’re here to pressure and beat up on. Then you need to get out. That person is as much a victim of Kingpin as anyone else in this city. Seems to me like you should be focusing on the big fish.” Zatanna snorted, and leaned in close to whisper him to him. “Oh honey you’re right, my legs do look great in fishnets. Real shame you haven’t gotten a chance to see it.” she said, “I’ll handle my own people, Daredevil, and I’ll handle them my way. This might be your city, but anything in this theater is my domain. And I’m not going to let you hurt a good person just because they’ve been threatened or pressured into doing something bad. We’re the good guys. We don’t do that.”
“I do not beat up on good people. I refer them to Murdock who uses them to take Kingpin down. If you weren’t new to my city then you’d know that.” He returned, his voice gruff with irritation. “And you may offer great medical insurance, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing Kingpin won’t do. You don’t know him like I know him. So if you don’t get off your goddamned high horse and help me out like I’m asking you to instead of assuming I’m some common street thug, I may have to resort to intimidation tactics on your employees to keep my city safe.”
Zatanna rolled her eyes, “I’m a member of the Justice League. You talk to the Avengers like this?” she asked, stepping forward. One finger went to his chest. “My crew, the people I pay, are without fault. You think I just hire anyone on this team?” she asked. “Background checks are performed. And I’ve got some pretty great resources. Like the batcomputer. So what are your other leads, or are you singular focused on this single traveling act. It’s not like you’re pestering me because you like the way legs look in the fishnets.”
Keeping his heartbeat steady and his composure together, Daredevil pursed his lips together, “As a matter of fact, I do if and when they come into my neighbourhood. Apart from a select few, they all tend to prefer not stepping foot in Hell’s Kitchen. And nobody is without fault. They may have been clear when you hired them, but anyone who has a kid that can’t afford medical care or college, or a mortgage that they can’t pay off is fair game for the Kingpin.” He returned, sneering down at her, “And I’d be lying if I said your legs didn’t look gorgeous in your fishnets - but you’re right. That isn’t why I’m pestering you. Right now, you’re one of the only new things to happen to this city, so that’s why I’m focused on this single traveling act.”
She rolled her eyes, “Look you can take the bluster and stuff it.” she said, turning to grab her purse. “Boys. You gotta throw on that macho act every tme a new superhero goes to town, don’t you?” swinging her purse over her shoulder she looked back at him. “If a man like Kingpin was stupid enough to use my crew to traffic drugs, both that crew member and Kingpin would have hell to pay. Probably literally.” she said.
“I don’t take the safety and wellbeing of the people who live around her lightly, so excuse the bluster when it comes to people who are endangering that.” The masked vigilante sneered, crossing his arms over his chest, “And a man like Kingpin has even the Devil in his pocket, so I’d suggest you drop your own bluster and consider that maybe not all of your team is as reliable as you may think.”
“Mmhm your legal consultant sure did.” she said, tone indicating just how much she believed Matt Murdock and he weren’t the same people. Same way plenty of people believed Clark Kent just happened to know Superman. “Do you have any more news for me, or you just come here to tell me to watch myself in your city?”
“Hm.” Matt grunted, hopping down from the rafters so that he could face Zatanna, shifting so that it could pass for him looking her in the eyes. “Both. My city, my rules. And what Murdock doesn’t know is that this is a cocaine smuggling ring I’m tracking. I’ve got some reliable sources that say that Kingpin is using someone on your crew to get drugs in and out of the city.” He explained, listening to her heartbeat carefully to see if she knew more than she was letting on.
@cigamfossertsim
“I hear my legal consultant had a few words with you on my behalf.” Daredevil called down to the magician, perched on the catwalk above the stage.
“My agent would tell him, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.” she said, a smile curling her lips. “Likely because he doesn’t have any more information than that. Look, I can at least tell you who I’m absolutely positive it’s not. It’s not Mikey my stage manager. It’s not Andre who takes care of the animals. My crew is pretty small, mostly we rely on theater hands that the theater has already hired.”
“There is when you’re him.” Matt replied with a slight sigh, thinking back on all the trouble newspapers and tabloids had gotten him in. “I assume that given how small your crew is, your luggage is equally small? Not so many that one or two suspicious crates would go by unnoticed?”
