Sometimes people come into my house and ask me why the hell my floors are so slippery. People like my parents don’t know about my kinks and when the visited yesterday, I told them some awkward story about how I just cleaned and polished my floors. Everyone else knows that it’s really because of the two bottles picture above.

When dressing in latex, it’s really important to lube up the latex to help it slip on easily. The thing about silicone lube is that even the slightest amount can spread as a thin film over a hard surface such as hardwood floors. So, if even a trace of lube is left on my foot as I step around, or if the bottom hem of my rubber pants touch the ground, it is enough to turn my house into a slippery danger zone.

The other problem with silicone lube is that it is really, really expensive. A ½ litre of SwissNavy silicone lube is $50 at Priape, for example. A keen rubberist (or even someone that just really likes sex with silicone lube) is likely to go through ½ a litre in no time at all. Fortunately, there is an alternative for you. Look on any silicone lube and you’ll find that the two main ingredients are Cyclomethicone and Dimethicone (aka cyclopentasiloxane or Dow corning 350). Dimethicone constitutes the main body of silicone lube, while cyclomethicone is used as a thinner to help spread the dimethicone.

In Canada, you can pick up a gallon (3.8 litres) of cosmetic grade Dimethicone here for $47 dollars (it ends up being about $75 dollars after shipping and taxes). Unfortunately, cyclomethicone isn’t sold in Canada for various (silly) reasons. It’s listed as a health risk, but is still sold as a component in hair products, but not individually. The Dimethicone I buy has a thickness of 350cst, which is too thick to use alone, but if you can find a place that sells 100-200cst, it might be thin enough without the cyclomethicone. Otherwise, you need an awesome USA friend like twohandstochoke to run some up to you :). I would highly recommend against ordering from the USA because as far as I can tell, the duties and shipping costs to send chemicals across the border is astronomically high.

If you live in the USA, you can buy both components from someplace like Chemistry Store, with each gallon costing about $40 before taxes and shipping. Since I’m not in the USA, I have to estimate, but it would cost between $120-$150 for a total of 7.6 litres of silicone fluids.

I think the savings goes without saying. The nice thing about this arrangement is that you can also mix the lube to your desired consistency. Just mix cyclomethicone into a bottle of dimethicone until you have reached the desired slickness.

Btw, I don’t have any shares in aquatech or chemistry stores. Now go make up crap tonnes of lube and have fun!
