ignatius + lion symbolism

To start off, Ignatius’ first name comes from Ignatius of Antioch, who was martyred in the Circus Maximus by beasts in AD 103. Specifically, lions tore him to pieces in the coliseum.

The first time Ignatius saw a lion in the flesh was when he was human. Animal trade to Rome was frequent and common, with wealthy individuals buying up imported, exotic animals from Asia and Africa for status. A malnourished juvenile male lion was locked up in an unattended cage and Ignatius, bewitched with wonder by how big this cat was and how powerful it looked, left salted fish between the iron bars of the cage. For as long as he could, he stayed there, eyes remained locked on the beast. He never felt so much awe and respect for anything before ---- and as he cautiously buried his hands in the beast’s mane, he decided that lions would be iconic of his image and character.

As a vampire, living and learning under Em, Ignatius owned two female lions as “pets.” Never once did they attack him and if they growled, he growled right back. They were just threatening to any drudges that lived in Em’s company.

During Tomas’ servitude, particularly when Ignatius was causing terror around the West Indies as a pirate (which included destroying British ships just to see Tomas’ reaction), Ignatius kept several lions onboard one of his vessels. He once threw Tomas to them and mocked that it was just like Biblical Daniel in the lion’s den. Followed by a menacing laugh and a “survive the night.”

Even when Ignatius appears in canon, his posture is mentioned as feline-like--- powerful but lithe and agile. Even his attack and defense patterns subtly mimic that of a lion.
