Carry around Inej

        Inej didn’t remember falling. She only knew that she must have because Kaz was holding her, her feet not touching the ground. She could feel his heart beat, the rise and fall of his breathing, the warmth that radiated from his body. It was overwhelming, worse than a surprise hug from Nina. She felt paralyzed, unable to move, the smell of Kaz turning into heavy incense, filling her lungs like smoke.

      “ Put me down. “ Quiet words, but fierce. She did not care why he had picked her up, even if it was to save her. Her heart beat faster, not from his proximity, but rather because she was caged again and every second she spent in his arms was another that pulled her farther and farther back to the Menagerie. 

HE CHASES AFTER CONTROL,  fights to think through slivers of panic gripping stubbornly to his consciousness.  adrenaline still courses through,  heart rattling in its cage.  all he can see is the fragile body of his wraith crumpling to the ground,  a broken heap.    (  always so sure - footed  )   a net.  i should’ve brought a net. 

lithe muscles stiffen in his arms,  and he knows,  even before firm words form a command.  her eyes peer through him,  unseeing,  engulfed in images of a past hell,  a haunted look he knows too well.  kaz obeys without hesitation,  turns a sharp corner and sets her down as gently as he can.  he takes a step back.

Now, do not misunderstand me; when I call myself a shell I mean–a used up bullet casing. As in, the aftermath of something lethal.  As in, an echo of inflicted evil.

                                    He’s been with more men than he’d be able to recall, he’d had those who jumped up at the mere idea of getting anywhere with him, those who loved to play hard to get, those in the middle, and those clinging to their profound heterosexuality to the point of denying getting sucked off had anything to do with being gay. Nonetheless, Connor had been with enough men to know the difference between a game and between a threat. He can tell that this man isn’t joking and he isn’t waiting to be convinced otherwise, yet, like the icarus drawn in by the beauty of the sun, he keeps going; ready to collide and burn up. He’s got a few weeks left, anyway, if he’s lucky. Living life as if it was your last day was a hell of a lot easier than counting down the second until the cops would show up in front of your door, ready to throw you behind bars.

HIS PATIENCE IS SLIPPING,  remnants of fine sand falling through the neck of an hourglass. connor’s expression has shifted              a calculated burst of recklessness,  a show of bravado before it’s too late.  kaz almost laughs              such dramatics.  what is it you’re running from,  walsh ?

‘  congratulations.  impressive,  i’m sure.  ’    sarcasm coats his tone in silk.  he steps closer,  a smooth movement  ;  shoulders hardly inches apart,  his head dips to direct grating words into connor’s ear.  revulsion sparks hotly in his stomach.     ‘  i suggest you find someone else to chat with now,  if you value the use of your fingers.  ’     with threat delivered,  he steps aside,  away from the suffocating proximity.
