Axonometric Realism | Beate Gütschow | Socks Studio

Beate Gütschow is a German contemporary artist who works primarily through photography. In her work, she analyses the complex and ever-changing relationships between perception, representation and reality.

For her series HC, Hortus Conclusus, she delved into the subject of “Enclosed gardens,” a recurring iconographic motif in Renaissance and Medieval paintings which would depict an idyllic scene contained in the space of a fenced or walled green space inaccessible to an exterior public.

After being shot twice by the police, framed for murder, and escaping prison, leading member of the Black Panther Party, Assata Shakur was granted political asylum in Cuba. She was the first woman to be put on the FBI’s Most Wanted list and is still on the list today. The United States labels this activist (age 73) a “terrorist” and offers a $1,000,000 reward for her capture.

Why? The United States government is not interested in racial equality. It is not interested in creating something more humane, fun, loving, or beautiful. Anyone threatening the white-nationalist agenda will be labeled a “terrorist”. Anyone endangering the white-nationalist corporatocracy will be hunted, imprisoned, and killed.

If you don’t see it now, I hope that at least future generations will see the United States as the dystopian nightmare it really is. Watch a documentary of Assata’s called Eyes Of The Rainbow, and tell me what you think of this “terrorist”. You can find it on YouTube.

Fruitvale Station (2013)

This film has been a favorite of mine for a while now and I think it’s because of the emotional punch it packs. It’s hard to stave of tears watching this movie about Oscar Grant’s life and horrifying death. This film and others like it add something to the story that the news articles and even the video of Oscar’s murder don’t add. Something that the Black Lives Matter and Justice for Oscar Grant movements try to get across. And that is that these people that are being unjustly shot down by the police on a near daily basis are just regular people. People who are trying to live their lives day by day, some flawed, but who isn’t in this world. The beauty of Fruitvale Station is that we get to see Oscar as a human being, making it easier to empathize with him for those just seeing his face on TV or those less inclined to feel for him. It confronts you with the facts of the matter. When people are killed like this what gets left behind are broken families and communities. And all because of preventable factors.

Police training in this country is broken and fuels those officers who come into the job with prejudices. De-escalating conflict is obviously a huge lesson that police aren’t being taught during training. Videos of Oscar’s death and others around the country clearly show police using the opposite of de-escalation tactics. Also, the police are often taught that getting home safe takes priority over everything else. According to the story of Oscar’s death, the officer who shot and killed him said that he mistook his gun for his taser. If that’s true what a horrible mistake but it goes to show how on edge these officers are, which are symptoms that can be treated by implementing simple de-escalation techniques. Bad apples fall from rotting trees, therefore there needs to a massive overhaul of police training regiments across the U.S for the sake of the safety of our citizenship. That statement sounds twisted but it’s the reality of our situation in this country.

Fruitvale Station highlights the problems but doesn’t explicitly deal with solutions. Yet that isn’t its goal. It’s mission is to get the audience to empathize and also force us to face the harsh realities that many people have to deal with on a daily basis.

Today marks the beginning of the Puerto Rican militant group the Young Lords. The Young Lords got their start in Chicago as a street gang but was quickly turned into a political organization by Jose ‘Cha Cha’ Jimenez. The reorganization took place September 23 to honor de Grito de Lares, the first major revolt against Spanish rule on Puerto Rico in 1868.

The organization first took on the forceful evictions and displacement of working-class Puerto Rican and Mexican neighborhoods. In 1968 they would expand into broader political action and the second branch in New York City, a historic center for Puerto Rican migration. The Young Lords began many important social programs (much of which emulated the Black Panther Party) including a free breakfast program, free daycare, free health clinic, a news service, and unequivocally supported independence for Puerto Rico.

The Black Panther Party was founded on this day in 1966.

The Panthers were created to combat the multiple injustices faced by the African American community, first in Oakland, and then across the breadth of the United States. What stands out and continues to inspire the struggle for racial and class justice today is their various social programs and their militancy.

Apart from having a very clear ideological position in regards to white supremacy, capitalism, and imperialism, they also had very definite projects to match their ideas to actions. These included healthcare clinics and breakfast programs for poor Black people, political education study groups, and gun clubs and self-defense classes.

Today, the legacy of the Black Panthers continues to influence culture and politics, especially in the Black communities across the country and the world.
