“No, I’m a writer, though I guess those could be interchangeable at this point. As an extremely lazy person, yeah, I prefer when someone else puts in all the work and I reap the rewards. So did you grow up in Lakewood too?”

“I think that it doesn’t need all of that boring stuff! Just the alien stuff would be fine. I am looking for something cool and new to read, but I can only find dumb love stories with dumb love triangles.”

“Well people are generally very dumb and so dumb sells really well. Remember to buy all your the dumb love stories at Berwick Books, I feel like I’m obligated to say that.”

“No abandonment issues though he might have some in the future. The spouse isn’t overbearing but possibly neglectful. Do you consider politicians aliens or monsters?”

“I don’t know, he might have some right now since he’s been waiting there for like ten minutes and I’m guessing it’s a Tinder date gone sideways or he’s loitering. Depends, if it’s Ted Cruz, definitely monster. If it’s Donald Trump, obviously an alien.”

“I agree with that assesment, but I’d rather not think of what word would fit my situation. I’m afraid not. I have never been the type to sit in a coffee shop for hours. Every time I entered one, I left within minutes. So, let me introduce myself—Catherine Vanhouten, a pleasure.”

“I could probably think of about a million at this point but I’ll save you the entire three book series on tragedy for now. Coffee shops are pretty boring and most are pretentious but that’s where they keep the coffee and as someone who still has yet to actually make his own coffee at home, it’s where I live. Nice to meet you though, I’m Brandon.”

“Traumatic seems like a fitting word. Thank you, I do appreciate that. Ah, did you? Maybe we ran into each other without even realizing what had happened. I thought I would be living in New York permanently, but life happened.”

“Could also sound like a definite understatement. I personally have never lost someone in that particular way so I can’t imagine what that’d be like. I went to NYU, worked at the New York Times for a bit, but for the most part I was a hermit, unless you frequented coffee shops often then we probably must have at some point.”

     “I have definitely heard that expression but that only really applies to retail and people who aren’t their own bosses,” she said, lifting the camera once more and snapping another silly photo.

“I mean I’m mostly my own boss” Brandon said, making another stupid face at the camera just to annoy Kira a little bit before he posed for a semi normal one. “Happy now?” He added with a smirk.

     “Look, do you actually want your headshots or not?” Kira asked through her laughter, bringing her camera down from in front of her face and shooting her client a mock-serious look. “Taking pictures is hard enough without you making those ridiculous faces at me. And don’t think I won’t print out a banner and stick it right in the window of my studio!”

“I do, have you ever heard of the expression the customer is always right? And this face is definitely right.”

“I’m not dehydrated…I just have still healing ribs. Water does nothing for me in this case, and I don’t think I’m going to pooof, end up with diabetes after one oversized milkshake. That pessimistic attitude tells me you need something sweet too, Mr. Jacobs.”

“How’d you manage to break your ribs? Also, water might not heal you but it’s still better than a sugary milkshake, your dentist will thank me. I prefer bitter over sweet, and I’m pretty sure I haven’t had a milkshake in twenty years.”

“Don’t judge me…I absolutely needed the large okay…I get winded if I walk for more than five minutes…I still can’t bend over. I deserve this shake…possibly two. I couldn’t even get myself to the park to have a proper picnic…instead here I am…impromptu half picnic on my front lawn.”

“Too late, already judging. Sounds like you’d need water, not a shake. Besides, I feel like the whole being injured justifying drinking yourself into having diabetes only works if you’re five.”

“Well, if you want the full story then I’ll say that I was living in New York City, but my fiancee died and I couldn’t stand living in a place where I was surrounded by things that reminded me of him, so I decided to come back to my hometown. Obviously I’m still not over it, hence the day-drinking.”

“Sounds traumatic, I guess that explains the day drinking and I’m not really one to lecture about healthy outlets for grief so drink away, but I’m sorry for your loss. You know I lived in New York for awhile too before coming back to Lakewood, it’s hard to imagine anyone would actually trade that place for this one.”

“Oh, I already know that I can get away with pretty much anything.” The scoffed, a smirk tugging against the corner of her mouth. “Oo, pushing my luck? Are you going to punish me?” She sung lightly, doe eyes widening at the thought. “You have a thing for aggressive women? Does that mean you want me to get into a bar fight over you?” Fingertips treading into his hair, her lips lightly brushing against his, “Not worried? I mean, you should be a little bit worried-” Though, before she could ramble any further, her words are cut off by a sweet kiss, arms tightly wrapping around him in an attempt to deepen it.

“So cocky” Brandon muttered with a smirk, not at all surprised by her words. “No, you’d probably like that way too much” he added as his grin widened. “I’d prefer if you didn’t. Unless it was in a tub of jello and you were in a bikini, then I support bar fights one hundred percent” He said half jokingly. Truth be told, Brandon should have been worried at least a little bit, but he wasn’t, at least not this time around. He told himself that if things ended between them again that he wouldn’t be so bitter about it and ultimately he’d accept that people loving each other didn’t always mean a successful relationship.

“Then again.-” Her words trailed, pouncing ontop of him as her hands threaded through his hair, using the palms of her hands to fluff it up. Giggles escaped from her already parted lips - unable to stop the blush that came about from glancing at his disheveled form. A shy smile brushing against the corners of her mouth, the blonde’s fingertips tugged against his shirt. “Good, because I would have to kill them all.” Despite a mutual agreement on taking the relationship slow, that did not mean that her love for him suddenly disappeared. “Don’t worry, you don’t have any competition either– well, not a lot.–”

“You just really like seeing what you can get away with, huh” Brandon said with a playful glare as she let her hands run through his hair, “You’re really pushing your luck, you know” he added with a smirk. “Oh okay, you went straight to murder. That’s pretty aggressive, but I guess I’ve got a thing for aggressive women so I’ll excuse it” He said with a small smile, letting his hands slowly wrap around her small waist. “Not a lot? Well good thing I’m not worried about it...” His words slowly trailed off as he leaned forward and slowly let his lips press against hers.

“If you are curious, pry away. I can say I am more than used to this. And no, I’m not. I’m actually drinking wine, although I have been thinking or ordering a gin and tonic.”

“Alright then, what’s your story, why are you in Lakewood of all places? You don’t look particularly thrilled and that mixed in with the wine it’s sort of telling.”

“Well, I might not have a reason to be drinking this early, but I can say that I am not an alcoholic.”

“Well that’s reassuring. I guess I won’t pry despite my nature, are you at least having a bloody mary, I hear those are good in the morning.”
