100 year old gingerbread recipe below + a kitchen witching story I can 100% relate to...
“Hi there! I have a recipe for you (one that means a great deal to me). It’s been in my family for over 100 years. It sounds silly, but it’s for gingerbread. Gingerbread has always been strangely important to my family. also have a fun story about this recipe. Near Thanksgiving, I lost a citrine bracelet that I had made. I figured it came off at the grocery store and was gone forever. While I was mixing the batter, I saw something weird looking in it. I kid you not, I pulled my bracelet out of the batter, sticky and covered in dough. Most likely story? It fell off in the flour bag. How I want to interpret it? Magick.
Ingredients:
1 cup of packed brown sugar
1 cup of white sugar
¼ cup cooking oil
1.5 cups molasses
2 eggs
1 cup of sweet milk
6 Tbsp Ginger
1 Tbsp Cinnamon
??? self rising flour
Mix the sugars, oil, and molasses. Add eggs and milk, mix. Added ginger and cinnamon, mix. Add enough flour to turn the dough into hard cakes (usually the outside of the cakes are also coated in flour). Baked at 350 degrees until golden brown.
Like I said, old family recipe so there is no exact amount of flour or baking time. And honestly the spice amounts are up to interpretation. The original recipe called for 4 Tbsp of ginger, but they always adjusted it and I recalled it being a little spicier so I added more. But to me, the magick this embodies is warmth, comfort, happiness, protection, connection to loved ones, remembering/grounding what is most important.”
Thank you @herb-tea-kitchenwitch for sharing such a treasured family recipe with me! I hope everyone enjoys this Witchy Wishlists gift as much as me :)
Warming Autumn Soup
My all time favorite season is just around the corner, so I figured with all these soup recipes floating around that I’d post my own! I make this all the time when it’s cold, and the leftovers are amazing too. Feel free to adjust the ingredients to your liking.
Ingredients:
2 cups of water
2 cups of chicken stock
2 cans of cream of chicken
¾ Cup of milk
3 Bay leaves
1 tablespoon of pepper
1 tablespoon salt
1 Tablespoon Rosemary
1 Tablespoon Basil
1 Tablespoon Oregano
1 Tablespoon Sage
You can substitute the above ingredients with dried herbs/seasonings or just use 2 tablespoons of italian seasoning
1 Cup of carrots cut into circles
2 cups of yellow or red (or both) potatoes
½ Cup of green beans
½ Cup of corn
4 cloves of diced garlic
½ cup of diced onions
2 large chicken breasts cut up into bite size pieces
Steps:
First cook the chicken pieces until they’re white both inside and out! You do this by boiling it, cooking it in a pan, baking, however you want! Feel free to season it a bit if you want to add more flavor to the meat, but it’s not required at this step!
While the chicken is cooking (I usually boil or Pan cook my chicken) go ahead and prepare your vegetables. Since this is a witchy stew, I like to ground myself and think happy thoughts while I’m doing this step. I always wish for whoever I’m making this soup for enjoys it and feels great afterwards. If you have those little bento veggie cutter shapes this would be a great time to use them!
Once this is done, get a large pot ready and put it on the stove at high heat. Go ahead and add in your water, herbs, chicken stock, veggies, seasonings, and cooked chicken, then cover with a lid. You could cook the chicken at this part, but I just like to cook if beforehand because you can never be too careful when cooking chicken. Beef is okay rare and stuff, but poultry HAS to be cooked all the way through or you could easily get sick. Stir occasionally.
Now you can just sit here and chill, maybe say a chant if you’d like while you wait for the veggies to cook. This should take about 20-25 minutes for them all to be cooked through. Honestly this is my favorite part because the house just smells amazing while it’s all cooking.
Once it’s done turn the heat down to low-medium and wait for it to stop boiling before you add in your cream of chicken and milk. I do this part last because any other time I add it these two ingredients in it always turns out with the milk curdling or getting weird.
I add in the cream of chicken to give it a little extra thickness. 1 can for semi-thickness and 2 for super good thickness. Add in however much you like. Now just sit there and put it on low completely with the lid on, stirring occasionally, until it’s all mixed in and nice and thick.
And tada! It’s done and now you have some delicious soup for the chilly days and nights. when Autumn rolls around this year I’m gonna try and make some homemade bread to go with it. If I do I’ll post or link the recipe on this blog.
I hope you enjoyed this recipe.
(Updated and changed a few things cuz it’s been up for about 2 years now)
magickal snickerdoodles ☀️💘
merry meet! <3 today i made some wonderful and chewy snickerdoodles, and i wanted to share it with you all so heres the recipe :))
✨youll need 🍄🌙:
✨1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
✨1 1/2 cups sugar
✨2 large eggs
✨2 teaspoons vanilla
✨2 3/4 cup flour
✨1 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
✨1/2 teaspoon baking soda
✨1 teaspoon salt
cinnamon-sugar mixture 🌿🌟:
✨1/4 cup sugar
✨1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon (love and happiness 💖✨make sure to make your intent clear!)
what to do🍓💘:
preheat oven to 350° f
In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar for 4-5 minutes until light and fluffy. Scrape the sides of the bowl and add the eggs and vanilla. Cream for 1-2 minutes longer.
Stir in flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt, just until combined.
In a small bowl, stir together sugar and cinnamon.
If time allows, wrap the dough and let refrigerate for 20-30 minutes. Roll into small balls until round and smooth. Drop into the cinnamon-sugar mixture and coat well. Using a spoon, coat for a second time, ensuring the cookie balls are completely covered. *To make flatter snickerdoodles, press down in the center of the ball before placing in the oven. This helps to keep them from puffing up in the middle. *
Place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake for 9-11 minutes. Let cool for several minutes on baking sheet before removing from the pan.
enjoy !!!!! blessed be 🌙💘
also this makes an ungodly amount of cookies so this is perfect for sharing with friends!!! <3
Moon Rabbit Grimoire: Moon Cookies!
It’s recipe time!!
So, today is a full moon and I decided to celebrate! So, I found moon cookies recipes, adapted them to my needs and just baked them: they are delicious!
Ingredients
1 and ¼ cup of flour;
¼ cup of confectioner’s sugar (I’m pretty sure it works with regular sugar too);
¼ cup of butter (I used 2 to 3 additional teaspoons to get a good batter, see what works for you);
1 egg yolk (keep the rest of the egg on a small container on the fridge, you never know when you’ll need it);
OPTIONAL: 1 cup of grated almonds/walnuts;
How to do it?
Mix the flour + sugar + butter + egg yolk;
The batter should be smooth and consistent. You should be able to roll it in a ball;
On a container, put the batter, cover it up with something and keep it in the fridge until chilled. I sipped some tea and waited around 20min, I think;
Take it off the fridge and shape it in little moons. I opened half on my sink surface and cutted with a round glass, but by the end I just took pieces of the batter and shaped in little full moons, as you can see in the picture;
Cover baking tray with butter (take a few napkins, drizzle butter on it and spread on the baking tray) and place the cookies on it;
160°C, 20min and BAM! MOON COOKIES!
(You can tell they’re ready when the edges start to turn brownish and they “fluffed up” a little);
Shake sugar on top! I used vanilla flavoured sugar ;)
Witchy Adds
I added a few witchy things to set my intentions. On the ones in the picture I used:
Rosemary (focus, banishing, protection, love, healing, clear thinking, prosperity… It’s wonderful for everything)
Cinnamon powder (prosperity, love, lust)
Nutmeg (prosperity)
Clove powder (prosperity, love)
Grated ginger (power, lust)
Honey (love)
Vanilla extract (love)
Witchy tip!
Take a look at herbs/ingredients correspondence and get creative! There are so many things and combinations that can go well with these cookies, so just have fun!
Another reminder!
Pour good intentions, love and good vibes while cooking! I always have some music around and dance on the kitchen tiles to make it fun and enjoyable! Ask the moon to pour her energy on your festive cookies and make it your day (or night)!
Happy cooking, everyone!
