Two Wastelanders Walk Into a Bar..
“The F-Followers?” she looked at him curiously, furrowing her brow in thought, “Aren’t th-they uh, m-medical people? I h-haven’t heard m-much about them other th-that that. I’d b-be willing to work f-for them, though.”
“Yeah, Followers of The Apocalypse,” he nodded and chuckled. “Bit of an odd name for a bunch of doctors, but they’re good people. They’ve always got guard work at the gate, but every so often they need somebody to go run down a supply thief for example. They don’t say kill them, but depending on what was stolen, it might be heavily implied. Not as many caps to be had, but you get some a fair discount on medical supplies and treatment, plus I feel there’s a lot more personal satisfaction in helping them.”
“I have h-high respect for d-doctors,” she smiled, maybe a bit sadly, “I can d-definitely uh, r-run people down. I’m g-good at that,” snorting, she added, “And uh, I’m g-good with not killing, b-but I won’t sh-shy away from d-doing someone in if the s-situation calls for it.”

“Wh-Whatever you s-say,” Clarice shrugged, and quite effortlessly heaved the dead body into the hole, squatting to push down an arm that stuck up a bit, crossing his limbs over his chest.
She scooped the dirt back in over him and tamped it down with the back of her shovel, looking at the area with a somewhat thoughtful expression.
“Uh, G-God,” she started, clearing her throat and feeling a bit silly, “I kn-know this guy w-was a j-junkie, b-but if he was a g-good guy otherwise, j-just t-take care of him. If n-not, well.. Amen.”
Turning back to the robot, she leaned on her shovel, “N-Now what?”
“What do you mean ‘Now What?’ Now I pay you, we go our separate ways, and you never speak of this to anyone. Aheheheh! Anywho, if I recall we agreed to 50 caps! Tell ya what, I’ll give ya 52, for bein’ such a good sport through all of it! Really, my generosity astounds me sometimes. Aheh.”
“O-Oh uh,” she nodded rapidly, “Okay, I um, I w-won’t, I p-promise. It’s n-not like I h-have anyone to tell..” she added the latter part a little bit quietly. Truthfully, she was not popular enough anywhere to gain any audience to tell of a bizarre encounter with a robot and a dead body in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere.

Clarice sniffed a bit loudly, and glanced over at him, appearing ashamed to look him in the eye. “It’s b-been a wh-while, V-Val,” she spoke shakily, seeming to avoid the subject.
“Yes, it has. It is nice to see you again.” He said, gently, trying to be as comforting as possible. “I worried I might not see you again.” He offered her an encouraging smile.
“I’m, I’m s-sorry you had to.. S-See me like th-this,” she apologized with a quivering voice, still avoiding his gaze, “I’m g-glad to s-see you too, th-though.”
"Clarice! Please, do not cry... What Rufus said is not true..." Val frowned, wringing his hands together. "He only says the things he does because he is insecure. And... He is bitter that I have found someone that I care so deeply for, whereas he has not." He cautiously took a step toward her, reaching out to touch her shoulder. "Please, stop crying..."
She pulled away from him and turned around to face him, “H-He’s n-not wr-wrong!” she half shouted and half sobbed, “I-I’m a, I’m, I’m h-horrid! I d-do l-look like a, a g-grizzled m-man! I’m n-not p-pretty, I’m n-not f-feminine, I’m j-just, just, j-just ugly! I’m ugly V-Val!!”
“Wh-Why, why w-would you w-waste your t-time on s-someone l-like me anyways?” she asked, her voice still choked, “I h-have n-nothing to g-give anyone, I’m j-just a h-hindrance!”
“That is not true.” Val said, a frown apparent in the tone of his voice.
“You give me a great many things that no one else does.” He said, his fists flexing at his sides as he debated his own words. “You… You bring me joy when nothing else does… You make me smile when nothing and nobody else can.” He said these things softly, quietly, as if afraid to speak them.
“You are… a very dear friend to me.”
Clarice sniffed grossly, her legs crumpling beneath her as she put her face in her hands, “I’m n-nothing, V-Val, n-nothing..”

WHAM (destroy Rufus please)
“Th-That’s it!” Clarice shouted, fuming, “I’ve h-had enough of y-your c-cracks about me, I don’t c-care if you’re V-Val’s brother!”
She swung hard at his jaw with her right arm, putting a devastating amount of rage behind it.
Rufus ducked, and just barely missed the decimating knuckle-sandwich he was about to receive [AGILITY 8]. With as scrawny and weak as he was, he had to be quick in order to have survived nearly 60 years in the wasteland.
“Woah! Goddamn!!” He began scrambling backwards on his hands and feet, but the shock left him struggling. His mind was racing, frantically trying to find a way to talk himself out of this deadly situation.
Clarice stalked after him slowly, letting him feel the fear of God in his veins, “All y-you are is b-bitter, crude, and s-selfish! I d-don’t know why your b-brother even puts up with y-you! You h-have this potential to be a g-good person, and you s-squander it,” she cracked her knuckles, glowering at him, “And I’m g-going to p-put you in your place!”

Epiphany Drabble Prompt
“Where did she find that thing? It looks like a sundress tailored for Lilly.” Rufus snorted to himself, looking away from Clarice who was walking around Jacobstown in her flowy, yellow, pre-war sundress. Jacobstown was probably the only place in the wasteland where she would have felt comfortable enough to do so. Who was going to criticize her, the mutants?
Val, however, couldn’t take his eyes off of her. She looked so young like that, like 5 years younger than she usually did. Though, considering her age, the armor usually made her look older. So, the dress in question, made her look, normal. As normal as Clarice could look. A young, lost, and broken woman.
Val’s heart panged with sympathy, but also, something else…
“O-Oh!” Clarice spotted the pair of them—though she wasn’t too keen on Rufus—and went over their way, or rather flounced over, happy as she seemed to be in her tacky yellow dress.
“Hi V-Val,” she addressed the taller ghoul, seeming to be ignoring his younger brother at the present time.
The way she practically pranced made Val’s lips tug up in an amused, happy grin. “Hello, Clarice.” He returned the greeting.
“Yellow suits you quite well, it makes your eyes look brighter than they already do.” He chuckled.
Rufus rolled his eyes so hard, his head moved in sync. He got up from his seat on stool near the cooking pit, and went inside his bungalow. He didn’t want to have to listen to this tripe.
Val glanced over his shoulder when he heard Rufus’ bungalow door slam behind him, and he shrugged one shoulder. “Good riddance.” He said quietly with a cheeky smile at Clarice.
“Oh, th-thank you,” she looked down, hiding her grin somewhat, but quickly turned her head back up to face him, squinting as Rufus left, “Wh-What does he g-get out of being s-so uh, b-bitter, anyways?”

“Hmm…” She tapped the edge of the bottle on her lips. “How about…” She raised it back up. “To the two of us outcasts. May our scars not be weaknesses but armor.”
“Th-That’s uh, that’s p-profound,” Clarice commented, nodding and clinking her bottle against Pip’s once again, “It d-doesn’t hurt to h-have good um, armor-armor too, th-though,” she chuckled with a little snort.
Pip took a long swig of her drink before breaking out into giggles. She eventually calmed down and put on a serious face. “You see Clair,” she said in a deep, very stereotypical Russian voice. Her cheeks were twitching from trying not to laugh. “No fear of boolets hitting body, because we faster than enemy at ze draw-” She couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst into laughter.
She didn’t quite get the accent, but she laughed along with her all the same, snorting and wheezing. “And th-the uh, the b-boolets,” she tried to imitate Pip’s Russian as best she could, “They r-ricochet anyway, b-because we have t-true mettle, and—” she rapped her fist on her cuirass, “M-Metal!”

“Val!!” Clarice stepped out of their bungalow in Jacobstown, carrying a tan little boy with dark hair and equally dark eyes who wore just an off-white cloth diaper, “Val! Wh-Where are you?”
"I’m over here,” came Val’s familiar, deep voice, over by a large snowdrift. It had snowed the night before, and it seemed that their daughter was just now getting her chance to play with it, a little girl just as tan as her brother, but with piercing blue eyes to match her mother’s.
“D-Don’t let Calliope g-get too cold,” she warned, with a smile though as she joined him and set their son down to join his twin sibling, “G-Go on, James, g-go see what your sister’s d-doing.”
He ran off towards the snow, grabbing up haphazard fistfuls of it and throwing it at his sister, the both of them squealing and laughing. Clarice walked over to Val, wrapping her arm around his and beaming up at him; he looked lovingly down at her, reaching around with his other hand to gently touch her cheek.
They looked on at their two children, running around in the glittering snow, and it felt right then that none of them had a care in the world. The wasteland’s horrors could not touch them when they had so much love.
