sort of a meandering thought more than anything, but one downside of moodboard-aesthetic subcultures having so much presence online (applies to punk obviously, but I was thinking about electronic music adjacencies here) is that there isn't really an "in" to a scene if there's no way to enter it with something people already within it want from you, and that probably has something to do with people kinda spinning their wheels and feeling miserable about not knowing how to meet friends with shared interests
like in an ideal world all anyone wants from you is your presence and they don't mean anything untoward by it, but in the material world, whether virtual or physical, "we are in possession of music that we know the other person would like to hear" is just such a powerful and immediate bonding point, and you really do see the difference in communities where shared interests facilitate often literal exchange between people
fandom as a social organisation vector is an obvious method for getting around that, but you also see it reflected within it, where the most readily available shared interests don't facilitate a lot of friendmaking, but things like "needing speakers of three languages to produce cross-referenced translations of print-only material" end up forming decades-long microculture
I wouldn't even limit it necessarily to non-fashion, because fashion communities (here contrasting more general aesthetic descriptors) also produce this, albeit with (infamously) steeper strains from wealth stratification, given how fashion works
oh fucking dead ass i was watching this out of order fuck me
i cant take this tense navigation of feudal loyalties and shifting alliances with a character design like that
"I swear to you that ive abandoned my resentment about your callous murder of our lord. I don't want revenge."
