katsuki's birthday
you knew katsuki wasn't the type who liked to celebrate his birthday. for as long as you've known him, he'd always downplay it, treating the day like it was like any other.
not wanting to make him angry, you abided by his request. you would text him as soon as the clock hit 12:00 am on April 20, wishing him a happy birthday, and when he was awake, you would go to him, giving him a big hug and repeating the text. that was it.
it hurt your heart to not be able to throw him a mini party, or take him out to his favorite places all day, but you knew that's what he least wanted.
this year though, you wanted to amp up the birthday celebration, but not too much where katsuki would feel annoyed.
before the clock struck midnight, you stayed up at your desk, writing a heartfelt letter for him. it was nothing too fancy, but it came from the heart. once you were finished sealing it up, leaving a lipstick-stained kiss mark on the front, you watched your phone, waiting for the time to change.
as soon as it did, you rushed to click the messages app, opening up katsuki's contact. you began writing, "happy birthday kats! wishing you the best birthday <3!!!" this was a usual text for you to send katsuki on his birthday, but, you weren't done just yet. you had one more thing planned.
you snuck over to the kitchen, trying your best to not make any noise.
you and katsuki had this thing where at least once a month, you tried a new restaurant or place to eat. last month, you went to a new cafe that opened up about 30 minutes from UA, katsuki fell in love with it. he usually doesn't like sweets, but after you begged him to try a chai chiffon cake, it was the only thing he could talk about.
you've been secretly practicing the recipe for weeks, hiding it from katsuki and the others. you wanted this to be the gift that only you two would understand.
after what felt like 5 hours, the cake was finally done. you used a simple cream cheese crumb coat to coat the top, and put some sprinkles to decorate. you prayed it tasted good.
it was now 7 am, everyone was in the lounge area, waiting for katsuki. you were holding the card, fidgeting with it anxiously.
as katsuki made his way around the corner, everyone shouted. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" he looked surprise as one by one, everyone came up to him to wish him a happy birthday, some even giving him small gifts. he looked annoyed, but was grateful for the well wishes, muttering a 'thank you' to everyone.
last but not least, it was your turn.
katsuki's eyes softened when you walked up to him. he reached around your waist and pulled you into a hug.
"happy birthday kats," you said, gently pulling away from the embrace. you pressed the card to his chest, "i wrote this for you."
katsuki smiled slightly and took the card, "thank you y/n... you didn't have to do this."
you smiled, "yeah i know, i just really wanted to do something different for you this year."
he pulled up back into a hug, breathing in heavily.
as you both let go, you took katsuki's hand, dragging him towards the kitchen as everyone followed.
"where are we going?" katsuki questioned.
"i have one more surprise for you."
right on the island, stood the cake you spent the whole early morning making.
"what is this?" katsuki went towards the cake.
"so you remember the cake you really liked at that cafe," you began.
katsuki nodded.
"i tried to make it for you. i'm not sure if it'll taste that good but i worked really hard... happy birthday," you gave a small, unassured smile.
in awe, katsuki planted a small kiss on your head. "thanks princess, this is way more than i could have asked for."
you giggled, cutting a piece of the cake and handing it to him. once he grabbed it, you played with your fingers, anticipating his reaction.
as he took a bite, his eyes widened.
you bit your lip, scared he was gonna spit it out.
however, katsuki ate more, basically swallowing the whole thing at once.
"y/n, this was the best cake i've ever had, way better than the one at the cafe!"
your eyes met his excited ones, "is it actually?!" you felt relieved.
"yes it really is, thank you so much," he pulled you into another hug, placing kisses on your head and around your eyes.
as he did so, everyone else was grabbing a slice of cake, awaiting to see how good it was for katsuki to praise and show affection in front of everyone.
"happy birthday kats," you laughed, playfully trying to move your head back from the shower of kisses.
katsuki pulled you back in, "this is the best day ever."
