32 years ago, your life was taken, but your existence carried an echo that will never cease. i feel privileged to be one of those who looked past the controversy of your life and got to know you as an artist, and even quite a bit as a person. i’m forever grateful for your art, your vision and the inexplicable wisdom and guidance you’ve given me, even from beyond the grave. as long as i’m alive, your memory won’t be buried.

In memory of Øystein Aarseth who passed on this day. A legend who made an impact on the black metal scene in the past, present and future:

“I think being in an alternative group means you try and fight hard for what you believe in and don’t care about what the ‘moral’ majority will say. We Mayhem are an alternative band because we try to do something positive and NOT follow any fashion.”

“A few other metalheads from around that area who had missed the train came to the party a bit later. Nevertheless they were a bit drunk and as they saw the DDR flag patch on Euronymous’ jacket sleeve they became rude: ‘How can someone wear this shit flag on one’s arm?’ One of them asked. Euronymous listened to their accusations mindfully. I assumed he sensed what they were saying though they were speaking with such a strong Saxony dialect even I was not able to understand. One of the guys pulled on the patch testing if he could get it off and said: ‘If they had put you to prison for 30 years then you would never ever wear this!’, Euronymous defended himself in English but they didn’t understand and became aggressive. ‘Put it down that thing, you communist!’.”
