I genuinely accidentally just stumbled upon an audio recording of the new witj on TikTok and it really seems like they’re trying to lean in to the idea that this song is Light manipulating and rallying his class against their teacher on the basis of ‘punishments aren’t harsh enough (we need to kill them)’. He leaves gaps in the first chorus which the ensemble later fill. He starts off angrily arguing with the teacher but in the chorus become a lot softer and like ‘what about the victims 🥺 waiting for some justice 🥺?’ After which the ensemble join him and he becomes angrier again

This!!! The way they arranged the song is really interesting! It was kinda jarring at first since it’s so different than the other versions but it builds really well and his vocal delivery is very strong! You can heard the way he shifts when he has the rest of his class on his side and while I kinda miss the ensemble actually having lines that they sing with him or in response to him it still feels like he’s getting them to rally behind him so it displays how the general public will react to Kira

I’ve seen some people complaining on Reddit and TikTok that the new musical has changes from the 2015 concept album and my only thought is ?? Yeah?? For better or for worse, this is a new adaptation (of adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation..) and it should be allowed to make changes because it’s been 11 years since the album came out and things have changed yk? The album and 2023 concert (which was effectively just a small scale production of the concept album) still exist so this should be able to play around a bit imo

This honestly annoys me so much! It’s why I can’t look at the comment section on anything that the new production posts. I get that people love the concept album but like that still exists so it’s not like anyone is taking it away from you. The songs have to change so that the lyrics make sense within the context of the show.

The concept album was created to demo the songs for Japanese and Korean producers in 2015 and the lyrics were then changed for those productions and a lot of the new lyrics are more similar to those versions (honestly I wish they were even more similar since I still feel like the English version misses some stuff). But it’s not like the concept album has been the only content of this for 11 years but when people are complaining about the lyric changes this is always ignored.

I DONT KNOW HOW I MISSED THIS BUT A COUPLE DAYS AGO TELLY DID A VIDEO SHOWING OFF BACKSTAGE AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF PROPS/ SET PIECES!!!

here are some of the things I picked out from the video!!

number one is the thing that made me jump out of my chair and scream is that on soichiro's desk there is a framed photo of (presumably) Sachiko and Light. shoot me in the head NEOWWW

then we've got Light's desk and bed (which apparently ryuk spends a lot of time standing on). I love all the tennis balls and textbooks and the unsolved rubiks cube (what, can't solve it light?). most of those little props are actually nailed down to the desk because it's on rails! that's how it seems to glide in and out between scenes

misamisa gets a fucking GLITTERY PIANO

then her I'm Ready outfit. definitely interesting and definitely confirming my theory that misa is forbidden from keeping the same genre of style from adaptation to adaptation

I love how every L and Soichiro scene in the musical boils down to:

Soichiro: You are a horrible person and I fundamentally disagree with your morals and the lengths you are willing to go to solve this case.

L: Well it’s not MY fault your son is Kira…

They have a completely different relationship in every version of this story and all of it works.

The process of matching subtitles to the 10th anniversary production means I am looking at this show that I’ve loved for 11 years second by second and I have so many not funny jokes now.

genuinely I'm so sick of people wanting all fiction to be ethical. can we all just get a little gross with it. the point of fiction is that it's not real. we can be unethical in fiction; same goes with being perverted with fiction, being unrealistic with fiction, and being grotesque with fiction. not all fiction has to be ethical, not every character has to be ethical, and that's okay. can we stop with the puritanism. be gross. be unrealistic. be whatever. if I don't like it it's not my business as long as we're all clear that its fictional.

I am trying not to be a hater or to be that gatekeeping fan but I don’t think anything that is being changed for this English version makes the show better and i actually think it makes it worse and messes up the execution of the best parts of the original show.

I’m sure it’s still good because the show is good but it could be better because the original was better and it didn’t need to be fixed.

It feels like someone who didn’t understand it shoved a bunch of new ideas into both the script and the score and I know it’s the original team partially behind it but they made a masterpiece 11 years ago and a lot of this is messy or feels like they think they need to hold a western audience’s hand for us to get it.

Update: I have chilled out since writing this. I think I need to frame it as a “every version as a right to exist” kind of way. I’m getting more info on the execution of the changes and while I do not think any of them are better than the original it does seem like a lot of them (virtual tennis excluded) are not as detrimental as I felt like they would be.

On a plot structure and character motif execution level I don’t think adding Gelus to the musical was a good idea but also she is baby girl

I will die on the hill that switching We All Need A Hero / My Hero from a Sayu song that Misa joins to just a Misa song fundamentally changes the work that the song does for the narrative and the audiences’ understanding of Light and Kira but maybe that’s just me
