Prompt 7

CREATE - Imagine you’re family owned a pizza and pasta restaurant, what interesting names can you come up with for it to be called? 

EVALUATING - How do you think Lengy feels about his life? In particular, how do you think he feels about being born in Thailand but now living in Australia? 

ANALYSING -Why would Lengy’s dad be worried about the Chinese restaurant across the road? Why did he feel like he had to improve the shop sign and menus 

APPLYING - What kinds of advertising strategies have you seen restaurants use? Why do you think they do this? 

COMPREHENDING - What did Lengy mean when he called himself a ‘fake Aussie’? What has led him to feel this way? 

KNOWLEDGE AND REMEMBERING - Has the Thai- Riffic restaurant been opened for longer than the Chinese restaurant? How do you know this? What reason does Lengy’s father give for adding to the sign for their restaurant? What does he think it will do.

Prompt 5

In the dead of the night while the rest of the world sleeps soundly, a young boy lays awake to feel the cold shake his hollow body. Nothing to comfort him, but silence. With no food left in his belly, his body appeared to be almost transparent, until he was left with no strength and died. 

“the world turns their full bellies away, while other are left empty”

A good way to prepare the students before reading the text would be to have a discussion based around poverty and famine. By simply asking the students if they are aware of these factors and why they exist, the teacher can help to prepare them for what they are about to read so that they can connect to it on a deeper level of understanding. Perhaps a short video on some facts relating to how many children go hungry or don’t have access to clean water could be another way to get the students in the right mind frame for the book.

Prompt 8

After searching #picture books, I came across a page dedicated to wordless picture story books. On this page were countless example of books that were, as the name suggests, made up of only picture and had no words. I thought that some of these books would be fantastic to use when teaching students about inferencing or prediction, as they are required to use their own background knowledge to make assumptions about what is happening in the text.

Prompt 3

The main element from this piece of writing that I wanted to focus on was spelling and punctuation which I think falls under the ‘conventions’ category. Great attempts were made at the words cushion (cushin), don’t (dot), know (now) and favourite (favret). 

Another aspect that still falls under conventions would be to revise the use of full stops. Some full stops have been put in inappropriate places such as in the middle of an idea/ sentence. Apostrophes could also be revised.

Prompt 4

My most resent placement experience was with a 7/8 class, therefore literacy looked a little different than in a standard primary setting. I found this difference to be one of the most challenging because the students worked independently more frequently and did a lot of silent reading which can be great but I certainly missed the aspect of having a class novel.

More positively, I was able to run my own reading group and assessment around reciprocal teaching which was a new strategy for me. I personally loved it and the group of students responded well to having discussions around the text and being able to use a lot of questioning to help them with their understanding.

Prompt One

ECL310- Deakin

Throughout my childhood and education, literature and reading has been one of the most prominent aspects. 

My parents always read to me before and during my primary school years and encouraged me to read a variety of texts outside of school. I also remember having the teacher read Charlie and the Chocolate factory during class as well as other novels. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynley Dodd is also another book that I remember loving when in the earlier years. 

I am extremely looking forward to having my own class one day that will hopefully share my love for great stories and the way they can transport you to another place. I hope that I can read books like the ones I was read to and loved growing up (especially Harry Potter).
