Effectuation logic is term coined by Dr. Saras Sarasvathy who is an Indian born business school professor who specialises in researching entrepreneurship and business ethics. She suggested the theory of effectuation in the 2000s and it is now regarded as one of the most effective process theories entrepreneurs can adopt. When an entrepreneur is using effectuation logic they are trying to determine what the future looks like through their innovations negating the issue of trying to predict the future, timing the market perfectly or waiting for the ideal opening. Sitting opposed to effectuation logic is casual reasoning.
So what is casual reasoning exactly? If one is using causal reasoning, they would start the project with a precise goal they would like to achieve within a specific set of established resources. Causation uses search and select tactics and believe if they can forecast the future they can control it. This kind of reasoning is best suited in a simple easy to anticipate operating environment, where the need to navigate continuous change in not necessary.
In contrast Effectuation logic is a way of making rational choices when the future is unknown. Its about recognising what is next best thing to do in relation to your goals, while always comparing these goals to available resources and actions that need to be taken. Someone utilising effectual thinking would think If they can control the future, there is no need for them to predict it.
There are four main principles to effectuation reasoning. They are as follows:
Bird-in-hand: You have to create solutions. Don’t wait for inspiration. Take action based on who you are and what you know.
Lemonade principle: Embrace uncertainty and surprises. Always remain flexible.
Crazy Quilt: Form good strong relationships with people who are open to making a commitment with you.
Affordable loss: Only invest what you can afford to lose.
Pilot in the plane principle: Understanding not everything is within your control effectuation logic encourages you to focus your time and energy on aspects which are to a certain degree in your control.
The effectuation life cycle
Effectuation reasoning isn’t a practise that should be implemented one time throughout the process. Its best utilsed in the ignition stage of the creative process where the need to create new means, fresh perspectives and new goals are most needed. As a result, instead of having one singular goal and finding one path to reach it, entrepreneurs can use these new and exciting ideas and perspectives to gain more partners on the project, more customers and can use them to help push forward the conception of the project in directions that were not forecasted, leveraging ideas as they come forward.

Creative reasoning needs
Reasoning is the course of exploiting existing knowledge to pull inferences and build explanations. Three different kinds of reasoning are abductive, deductive and inductive
Abductive reasoning
Abductive reasoning usually starts from an incomplete set of observations and continues onto the most probable outcome. Abductive reasoning is best understood with the example of a doctor and his or hers patient. The patient will convey symptoms to the doctor which are most likely incomplete as the patient has probably forgotten about some of their symptoms. The doctor then comes up with a hypothesis based on the patient symptoms and from there, goes down the list of possible illnesses and tried to assign the most appropriate one to the patient.
Deductive reasoning
Deductive reasoning is pulling conclusions from principles that are thought to be true. For instance, all mammals have kidneys, you then could use deductive reasoning to arrive at the conclusion that all dolphins have kidneys. This type of reasoning is driven by theory.
Inductive reasoning
Inductive reasoning is oriented around making observations gathering data and facts and making inferences based on what you now know. You are not always correct but it is very likely if it’s based off correct information. I think so far, especially in studio I have been utilising inductive thinking the most. During the research phase of the creative process I have been finding myself conducting research in attempt to try and find wicked problems that need solving. I will then try and use this information to come up with an solution that is based off the information I found.

Failure
When you are in the process of creating there is definitely going to be times that you are going to encounter failure. Failure is all part of the process and its important that you don’t let your failures discourage you. Its about shifting your perspective to look at your failures in a different light. Instead of looking at failure as a representation of something you cant do or that you are not good enough look at it in a way that you are now one step closer to finding the perfect solution as you can confirm one path that doesn’t work. An example of someone who has failed over and over and over again is British inventor James Dyson who created the dual cyclone vacuum cleaner. James Dyson is a perfect example of reversing the effects of failure and making failure work for him. The British inventor worked through 5,126 failed prototypes before finally arriving at the perfect design that went on to change household cleaning. I feel like I can take many lessons from James Dyson and apply them to my own creative practice. After all an expert/ master has failed more times than a beginner has even tried. I feel like this quote sums failure perfectly and if you fail enough in the correct way eventually its going to lead somewhere worthwhile.

CTEC501 Week 6 Reflection
Week 6 Studio
In week 6 of studio we were introduced to problem solving and more specifically how to attack this stage of the creative process in the best way. To help us gain a better understanding of the scope of our problem we were tasked with working through the 5 W’s which are: Who, What, When, Why, Where. This was to help us take our initial perception of our idea or problem and evolve it into a problem statement which is a more contextualised idea.
Stef and I were initially approaching the brief by trying to come up with the finished idea straight away, this was proving difficult. Once we surrendered and adopted this new approach it straight away helped us gain perspective on the type of topics we needed to research and overall helped us to think about our issue in the bigger context of society. The framework helped us answer questions or stared us closer to answering questions like why did we choose this topic, who were going to be our target demographic, where was the idea going to be implemented and what were potential solutions we could run with. It was a good approach to take your initial attachment out of your first idea and approach the idea from a fresh angle.
CTEC501 Week 5 Reflection
Week 5 Studio
In week 5 of studio we were introduced to the project brief for our upcoming assignment. We were encouraged to think about issues centred around the Environment and Communities. We have to approach the project with a futures thinking mindset.
So what is futures thinking? Well firstly you have two ways to approach a problem and that is with divergent and convergent thinking. Convergent thinking is coming up with an idea or an answer to a problem and then finding facts that support that idea. On the other hand divergent thinking is about asking a question such as a what if, and then exploring various different solutions to your initial question. Its about diverging in many different directions instead of solely fixating on one idea. The end point of the futures thinking process could be said to be the starting point for the design thinking process. The objective of future thinking is about inspiring. With a futures thinking process you are often looking 10-15 years in the future for opportunities we may or may not encounter, and being okay with accepting uncertainty that will naturally come with this approach. Lastly given its long term view, futures thinking adopts a broader assessment of what is happening. Taking into account issues that are appropriate for today, future thinking also considers the issue at hand in the context of greater macro factors and influences.

How is my creative practice changing?
One area where I have seen a change in my creative practice is how I approach the creative process and work through ideas to arrive at a final solution. Previously when I have had an idea I have often tried to come up with the final product or idea right away. This has drastically changed to now having an idea, working through research, asking questions like who, what, when, why, where and testing prototypes to receive real feedback. Another area where I have seen change in my creative practice is where I get my inspiration from. I have learnt that I am naturally drawn to the natural world and time and again find myself pulling creative ideas from this realm. Lastly I have found myself becoming more eager to try out new software and apps and incorporate those new skills into projects I’m currently working on. The two main ones I have used the most so far are premier pro and audition.
How am I experiencing the difference between having an idea in my mind vs growing it in the real world?
Trying to grow ideas that are in your mind into the physical world has highlighted massive gaps in my creative skill set. I always thought I was a relatively creative person or had a creative mind to a certain extent. But when trying to implement real ideas I have discovered I am often limited by my skill level when it comes to operating certain software. In my spare time I need to invest more time in learning new software and technologies so I have more variety to choose from when it comes to expressing ideas.
I’m developing more nuanced views on what?
I have developed more nuanced views on the overall creative process. I now understand in more the depth the journey a product goes on before it goes through the manufacturing process and then released to the market. I have also developed more nuance views towards technology and the roll it plays in our lives, and the potential for it to have glorious effects on society but at the same time the potential for it to impact our lives in a negative way. We need to approach technology consciously and with awareness to ensure we are extracting all the positive benefits from technology while also remaining aware of possible negative flow on effects from new innovations . This will help humans guide technology in a positive direction and avoid innovating new technologies to cure past mistakes also known as technological determinism (I think).
How can resourcefully prototype with what I have at hand?
I have learnt this week that prototyping is a vital component of the creative process and to be able to do it resourcefully can help the designer to make improvements and adjustments to the overall development of the design. Lo-fi prototyping is an extremely useful method of prototyping as it is frequently done with cheap materials such as cardboard, paper etc. With lo-fi prototyping you are able to do quick iterations which maximises the amount of feed-back you can receive. It also gives you the opportunity to experiment with many different ideas early on in your design process avoiding costly changes the closer you get to production.
These are some things I have learnt over the past week.
Technological determinism refers to a theory about the relationship between human beings and technology. Technological determinism raises the idea technology is the sole determinant for outcomes of social change. I watched an interesting video on this topic and the video raised an interesting point of how can say the internet stand for democracy as well as an informational dictatorship at the same time? This lead to the idea that technology isn’t inherently good, bad or neutral. Technology is just technology it doesn’t have any essence, they are simply artifacts that us humans use to make our lives more productive. Technology has many outcomes as a social constructiveness would say and it is up to individual human beings to decide how they want to utilise these technological tools. Every day we are proactively choosing how we use technology and how we are incorporating it into our daily lives. A good example in the video was a hammer. The hammer can be used for many good things such as building a house, fixing things or hanging up a picture, but at the same time the hammer can be used to conflict pain or even kill someone. Does this mean the hammer is good or bad? Well no the hammer is just a tool like technology. If you were to kill someone with a hammer it isn’t the hammer that is killing the person it’s the fellow human being. So it’s a social choice of how the individual wants to use the hammer and relating It back it’s a social choice how individuals want to incorporate technology into their lives. We shape our tools and vice versa our tools shape us. Humans as a whole have a collective obligation to direct the digital age because technology doesn’t have a pre-determined outcome.

I can now see the ethical issues behind..
I have recently been interested in nanotechnology and nanoscience research and for this question thought it would be interesting to look at the ethical issues behind this topic. Firstly nanotechnology and nanoscience is the study and application of physical, biophysical and biochemical peculiarities on an extremely small scale ( ~1 to 100 nanometers). Its goal is to deliver an understanding of phenomena and materials at the nanoscale and to create and use structures, devices, and systems that have novel properties and functions because of their extremely small and/or intermediate size (National nanotechnology initiative, n.d.). With something as new as nanotechnology its vital early on to consider and make researchers and society aware of the potential ethical and social aspects of nanomedicine and technology to help reduce possible contrary impacts on the environment and public health. Nanomedicine when first introduced to the market is likely to be expensive and has the potential to make national and international inequalities even worse than what they currently are. As the technology develops and gets more advanced we could possibly be looking at using it for human enhancement or human longevity. Again this may make the disparity between the rich and the economically disadvantaged even greater as the richer members of society are probably the only ones who are going to be able to afford it. If it is going to be used to increase human longevity there are many ethical issues surrounding that as well. Is it ethical to increase someone’s life span when we haven’t addressed or found solutions to current medical problems. Does this mean someone is going to have to live longer with diseases such as dementia making their quality of life even worse.

Intro to CT Week 2 reflection
Who am I and how am I creative?
Building on from Week1 reflection for introduction to creative technologies im an incredibly competitive motivated and driven individual. I often say I have an addictive personality and when I can harness and direct this energy towards positive fulfilling things that’s when I often see my best results. I like to push my mind into uncomfortable situations often through physical exercise more specifically running long distances. I believe this helps me to build perseverance, a stronger more positive mindset and be ready to deal with challenges that arise through life. There is reward in doing something that sucks every single day.
What is/has been/ can be creative tech
Creative technologies is fixing problems by constructing or creating something from a variety of things. Its approaching a task or a problem by taking ideas, technologies and different mindsets from different fields to approach an idea. Being resourceful, creative and improvising are also vital practices to creative technologies. Collaboration is another central practice to creative technologies because of its transdisciplinary nature. Creative Technologies regularly involves collaboration with other teams with different background who all pull expertise from different disciplines.
How am I using my 10 hours this week?
I have been reviewing the lectures after class as well as going through them and writing down any reading, articles or videos which have been suggested for us to check out. Ill then do some extra research on the readings to further enhance my understanding of the topic. I have also been taking general notes.
How do I reflect and How do I learn
I reflect by writing blogs post on tumblr and taking a moment at the end of the week to reflect on what I have done during the week and what I have coming up the following week. As of now I think I need to develop better reflection habits, something that I am going to try and work on.
I currently learn by downloading the days slides and taking notes directly onto the slides. I find this effective because it saves me from writing down the whole slide and I can easily add a note if the lecturer or other students say something interesting. If I feel I didn’t quite absorb the information for the day I will plan to watch the recorded session at a later time. I also read or try to read most of the suggested videos and articles. I do plan on reading some of the books that have been brought up as well as I love learning through reading.
How will the CT ethos be challenging for me?
One area where the creative tech ethos is challenging for me is how self-directed the learning is . I’m not use to being part of a learning environment where the student has to direct the majority of their learning. It’s a huge change coming from Victoria business school where we were told what was expected from us. Although the self-directed learning can be challenging at times I love how you can incorporate your own passions and interests into the course or even better that it is encouraged. Directing your own learning also teaches you important skills like time management and the importance of positive collaboration with other students.
How do I want to make a difference?
I want to make a difference in people’s lives by helping them realise they are capable of so much more whether its academically, socially or physically. We often put far to many limitations on ourselves and I want to help people dissolve these boundaries they have put up over time. We need to master our minds, callous our minds. I read a good quote the other day and it went “ We all live in a cage with the door wide open”. I think this quote is very true. We all know what we need to do but its often the things we need the most that we are afraid of the most.

CTEC 502 Week 3 Reflection
Week 2 Introduction to creative technologies.
In week 2 of introduction to creative technology, we were introduced to the marshmallow challenge. The challenge was to see which group could create the tallest free standing structure with the marshmallow on top. We later learnt kindergarten children are some of the top performers in this task. If you were to ask me before the challenge which demographic on average achieves the best results I would have definitely not said kindergarten children. So why is this? One of the reasons children are out performing adults on this particular task is because children aren’t arguing about who is the boss or the main leader. Children will often collectively collaborate with one another and consider everyone’s ideas. They don’t have any pre-determined assumptions about what is a good or bad idea so they don’t get hung up in the planning or analysis stage of the exercise. Secondly and probably the main reason for children’s success in this exercise is because of their excessive prototyping. Adults usually spend a lot of time getting familiar with the task, planning, then finally building the structure. Whereas as kids right from the start play with the marshmallow and build many structures each one improving on problems they encountered with the previous structure. So by the time the challenge is finished they have gone though 3 or 4 prototypes where on the other hand a group of adults has looked for the one right solution ultimately only ever attempting to build one structure that more times than not fails to support the marshmallow.
Key lessons from this exercise
· In any design task always identify what the marshmallow is and play around with different ideas that relate to the marshmallow (the problem trying to be solved).

Prototyping
Prototyping is an early model or example of the product you or I wish to build. It should convey what the final plans and intentions are for the final product. A prototype can be in many forms such as a drawing/sketch or a 3d model representation of your idea. Prototyping is important because it can help you gain an improved understanding of your design and the intentions behind it. Another huge advantage of prototyping is the early feedback it gives to the designer. Like what we learnt in the marshmallow exercise getting early feedback is vital for discovering potential issues, design flaws or just overall improvements to the design. Lastly prototyping can save you lot of money as not much investment has been put in, in the early stages of the design process. The later you make changes the more radical they can be, potentially costing the designer a substantial amount of money.

Why I want to be a creative Technologist (4 minute video)
Why I want to a Creative Technologist
As part of Introduction to Creative Technologies, we were given our first assignment which was to create a four-minute vlog style video that broadly answered the question “Why I want to be a creative technologist”. While we were provided with some additional questions to help get our thought processes going, it was ultimately left up to us to convey why we wanted to be creative technologists. Having never created a video in my life I was excited for the challenge and to learn something new. I was also a little worried as I had no idea about the processes involved in the of construction of a video.
Before recording the video, I completed the following preparation activities:
· Read the marking rubric to get an understanding of what was expected.
· Decided what questions I was going to answer as part of my video.
· Wrote a script of what I was going to say.
· Undertook some research to help support my answers.
I undertook the above activities as I wanted to be as prepared as I could be when it came to recording the video. I wanted to know exactly what I was going to say and how I was going to say it. It also helped me to feel relaxed and organised when the time came to record the video. Getting these activities completed early gave me time to invest in learning how to use a video editing software and how to build all the different elements of a video, something I had no experience with.
Following preparation, the next stage was to figure out the video side of things. This included:
· How I would record the video.
· How I would record the audio.
· An overall plan and order of things in the video
· What video editing software I would use.
When I was deciding how I would record my video I was in two minds, whether to just sit in front of the camera and record the video and audio together or to record the audio separately and come up with a different concept for the actual video. I decided on the latter as it gave me:
· more control over the video,
· more control over the audio,
· the opportunity to learn how video editing software works,
· more learning opportunities.
For the video I recorded myself on a walking a track. As we were not getting graded on the technical ability of the video, I did not want to waste too much time on planning what the video was going to look like or spend too much time in the post production phase. This was also because I am not very experienced with video editing.
In the post-production phase I edited the video utilising premier pro. Learning how to use this software was a cool learning experience for me as I have never done any video editing. I found myself using the basic tutorials premier pro had already set up and these proved efficient for what I was trying to achieve. If I found myself wondering how to do something that was not covered in the tutorials I would go over to YouTube, which always seemed to have an answer to my problem. Overall, it was a really fun, satisfying and rewarding experience learning how to use premier pro and looking into the future, this is definitely a skill I want to further develop.
For the audio side of things, I decided to use adobe audition. Adobe audition is a digital audio workstation, that gives you complete creative control over your audio. Again, this was something new to me and I was quite apprehensive when approaching this task. Since I had a well organised script, I was eventually able to record my audio in one take which only required a little editing. It did however take me approximately 20 goes at editing my completed audio until I was finally satisfied with the recording. Like premier pro the tutorials they had set up were helpful during the learning process along of course with YouTube. If I was to use adobe audition for a future project, I would experiment more with the editing tools and options as a way to further develop my skills. One negative about adobe audition was that it did tend to get quite complicated quite quickly, especially when tweaking your audio. As I had no prior experience working with audio it was hard to want to leave the path of pre-sets and predetermined settings as I simply had no idea what some of the other options did.
Storyboarding was used to help me determine the order I introduced the various topics in the video. Storyboarding was one of the first things I did once I had written my script and I knew the different areas I wanted to be covering. It also helped me visualise what my video would look like on screen. My storyboard simply depicted me sitting in front of the camera reading my script for the duration of the video. I later changed from this idea to something else, but my storyboard was still beneficial in helping me determine the order of the video. Looking at my storyboard was the influencing factor for moving away from the idea of just sitting in front of the camera for the entire video, as I thought it would be boring and repetitive.

Programming assignment 1
The comp570 assignment was surprisingly fun. We were required to analyse and understand code that utilises aspects of Processing that we have discussed in class and some other minor aspects that were new to us. We then had to modify the code by integrating our new insights with the knowledge we had already accumulated. When I was first found out about this assignment I thought it was going to be a horrible experience. This mindset stemmed from struggling in several of the tutorial questions and not being completely comfortable with all the different areas of programming we had covered up until this point. When I first approached the assignment I didn’t get very far , and so a short time later I got up and walked away. My lack of progress was probably down to my negative mindset, which didn’t allow me to learn and adapt to what was being asked of me. Later when I revisited the assessment I changed my mindset to something more positive and things started to workout.
During the learning stages (so in class lectures and tutorial exercises) for me the best way to learn something new was to just play around with it and get familiar with what everything meant and did. This often resulted in figuring out the answers to my questions or the tutorial exercises. I ended up using this same approach with this assessment. My other source of learning was the processing.org forum. If there was something I didn’t understand or needed further clarification with that was the first place I would go.
For next time things I could change are:
· Not approach the assignment with such a negative mindset
· Go back and read though lectures and tutorials more
· Be more active with asking questions to the lecturers and my classmates
· Practice more in my own time with the processing software
Hack a board game reflection
My group chose the Darkwing duck game. The game consisted of having to go around the board, in either direction and collect certain cards to win the game. Was not the most exciting game to say the least. The task we were given was to hack the board game in any way we wanted. This was either through changing the rules of the game, adding in sounds using the Makey Makey or using LED light. The group I was in decided to use sound as our main way of hacking/improving the game. This was an exciting idea as at this stage we hadn’t been taught exactly how to make sound using the Makey Makey. I was worried we had bitten more off than we could chew initially, but ultimately we managed to achieve what we wanted with a few minor issues that were covered in class the following week. Though the experience to me was an overall success there are some negatives about the experience as well. One of the main negatives was not meeting as a group enough. This proved troublesome as some group members would meet up discuss and implement ideas and this would leave other members in the dark. We would update each other over message but that didn’t prove to be an efficient way of exchanging information. To enhance the group members experience or even just my own for next time I could of researched or studied more of what we were trying to do so I could of contributed more ideas or help come up with solutions to problems were encountering.
Reflection
Who am I
Based on the four creative hats Rich Gold talks about, I particularly relate to the hats of the designer and the engineer, as these hats are more focused towards the consumer. I find it rewarding working on solutions, especially if you know it is going to have a positive impact on someone’s life. While I am yet to design or create something of substance, the functional precise thinking of a designer and the problem-solving ability of engineers are mindsets I aspire to incorporate into my creative career in the future.
What is creative Technology?
Creative technology is a field that encompasses art, digital product design and digital media. Well, that is a black and white definition to say the least. Technology just doesn’t become creative on its own, it only takes on this creative connotation when an individual uses it to craft his or her ideas into reality or when it’s utilised in unexpected ways. Creative technology is a mindset, starting with a curious experimental individual who pushes the boundaries of what can be communicated through various types of creative technologies.
How am I using my 10 hours this week for ICT?
Any set tasks from the lecturer have been my priority this week. When I found myself with some extra-time, I used it to read up on or write down some ideas for the assignment which is due soon.
How do I reflect?
The main reflection technique I use is mindful meditation. Mindfulness meditation is a mental training exercise that encourages you to slow down racing thoughts, part ways with negativity and calm both your mind and body. It combines meditation with the practice of mindfulness. I find this extremely helpful for realising where I have been directing my energy or attention for the day or week depending on when I do it. Sometimes I discover that I have been focusing on unproductive things, and with this exercise I am able to better direct this energy to more helpful things. Lastly, I found this exercise beneficial for calming the mind or calming negative emotions. With a calmer mind and emotions, I find that I can think with more clarity and be creativity.
How do I learn?
I’m a very visual learner so talking and collaborating with other people is very beneficial to me during the learning process. Often examples or visual explanations through diagrams help me the most when it comes to learning something new. I also very rarely understand things first go, this is where repetition comes in. Just like when I was growing up and my mum would repeatedly tell me to clean my room. Eventually I learnt and now my room is clean, well most of the time. The same principal goes for learning.
How do I want to make a difference?
When I think about making a difference in this world, to me its all about how much I can impact other people’s lives in a positive way. Hopefully with the skills and knowledge I pick up along this journey, I will be able to work on problems or even find new problems which when resolved have a positive impact on other people’s lives. Even if it is just one person.
Feasible + Desirable + Visible? What does this mean to me?
To me feasibility in the creative tech world means thinking about your design and determining if it is something that is possible to create within the confines of reality.
Desirable means is something worth having or doing because it is useful, essential, or has a widespread impact. In the context of creative technology to me this means working on essential problems and finding useful solutions to them that can have a widespread impact on people’s lives.
Viable simply mean does it work. In relation to creative technology does your solution actually work to fix the wicked problem you initially set out to resolve.
How is the future shaped?
The future can be shaped through first identifying important goals we want to achieve as a collective and then people from many different backgrounds and industries coming together and working on these goals to help improve our future environments.
How do technology and humans shape each other?
Technology and humans are constantly shaping each other. Technology has influenced how we as individuals communicate, learn and think. For instance, technology has changed the learning process by making it more interactive and collaborative. It has also given people regular and convenient access to a variety of resources which benefit the learner when they were struggling with the material. Another way technology has influenced society is through communication. In today’s age there are many new methods of electronic communication such as emails, social networking, facetime, as well as online conferencing. However, we do need to be careful that electronic communication doesn’t take away from our relationships with other people (i.e. face-to-face communication still has important part to play in our world today).
Societal problem → Technological Solution → Massive societal change
