Fair Game Week Day 7: AU/Free day
For once, the Branwen-Ebi house was blessedly quiet.
It had been a whirlwind couple of months, or, if Clover was being honest, a whirlwind couple of years. After the final battle, or ‘The Battle of the End” as people were calling (though he couldn’t really figure out why) the recovery process to get the world back together was long and busy. Clover finally moved into his full position as General of the Atlas Military (and didn’t Qrow get a laugh out of that one), followed by cleanup in multiple kingdoms, arresting the stray war criminals, rebuilding Beacon Academy, and just taking some time to heal from everything.
There were good things in the aftermath, though. Qrow and the girls finally reunited with their family. And, miraculously, he meant ALL of their family. Nobody was sure if Raven would stick around after the final battle, especially after losing her maiden powers along with the other three. Clover supposed it only made sense, with Ozpin and Salem finally being able to move on, there was no need for relics or maidens anymore. After a long and tearful screaming match with Raven and Yang, and Raven and Tai, and Raven and Qrow, she promised to stick around as long as they promised to give her the chance to do better. It was a tentative peace, but it was a peace.
If that wasn’t unbelievable enough, another miracle stumbled out of Salem’s prison after her defeat, almost 20 years older but still recognizable with a dirty white cloak and gleaming silver eyes. Even with all the hardships they had to endure during the war, the look on Yang and Ruby’s faces when they saw their long lost mother was enough to cement that it was all worth it.
Among the tearful reunions and reconciliations, there were quite a few proposals, too. Nora and Ren were in the middle of fighting a Nevermore when she said, and he’s quoting “If we live through this and you don’t marry me, I'm going to kick your ass!” To which Ren replied, “Was already planning on it!” Clover would’ve thought they’d forget their battlefield engagement in the relief that followed the defeat, but they only took a moment's breather before finding an officiant, getting married right in the middle of the battle camp, their witnesses being every Huntsman too injured or exhausted to help with the cleanup.
Yang and Blake were separated in the final stretch and weren’t able to reunite until a day after the End. They both ran away from their respective parents as soon as they caught sight of each other, and after a dramatic hug that involved Blake being picked up and swung around, Yang dropped to one knee then and there and asked Blake to marry her. They were finally put on leave from relief efforts 3 months later and had a beautiful summer wedding in Menagerie.
There were ‘finally’s all around; Jaune finally screwed up the courage to kiss Marrow, Ruby introduced Weiss to her parents not just as her partner, but her partner, and Qrow didn’t hesitate to have his own tearful reunion with Clover, culminating in a gripping kiss in front of his whole family.
From then on, it felt like years passed like months. Before Clover knew it, Qrow and the kids were throwing him a surprise party to celebrate him being General for a year. Ruby and Weiss moved into a spacious apartment in Atlas that they were almost never at because of all the missions they took, as they were in such high demand. Qrow proposed to him after a romantic candlelit dinner on the rooftop of the Academy. Ren and Nora were expecting their first child, then Blake and Yang had a daughter, and Nora and Ren had another baby, a boy this time.
The future came fast for all of them until suddenly, Qrow and Clover were welcoming home their own little bundle of joy: Dove Branwen-Ebi. Clover was sure that this was a type of love he had never known until he set eyes on his daughter for the first time. He was sure he and Qrow spent a couple hours just watching her sleep the first night they brought her home. In the same way, Qrow was watching her now, fifteen minutes after he had gone to lay her down.
Clover could only watch with a fond smile as Qrow stared, and thanked whatever gods that may be watching out for this world now that he was lucky enough to have this little family of his.
Fair Game Week Day 6: Atlas Ball/Mantle Battle
Why couldn’t it have just been a ball? Qrow would’ve given anything for a stuffy Atlas ball to be the most of their worries.
No, instead Salem’s agents had infiltrated Mantle and everything, and he does mean everything, had gone to shit. Now, he and his kids and the Ace Ops were in Mantle, fighting Grimm and evacuating the city while James scrambled to get the military ready before Salem got here. Because yeah, Salem was on the way.
Surprisingly, though, things were going well so far.
With Robyn and Clover’s help, the three of them took down Tyrion and all-too-happily handed him over to the Atlas prison. From there, he and Clover were sent back on evac duty with Robyn, who eventually split off to find her Huntresses and head to the breach in the wall. A breach that was, ultimately, their fault, but the Huntresses were being kind enough to not mention it at the moment. He had no doubt that as soon as Robyn took her seat on the Council there would be words, though.
He was checking in with his kids whenever he had the chance, and everything seemed to be going as well as it could. He was more than thankful that they were all teamed up with an Ace Op. He knew they were all talented Huntsman in their own right, but it eased Qrow’s worries a bit that they had some extra help.
Jimmy was checking in whenever he could, so, like he said, things could be going worse.
In fact, he was actually having some fun. By the time the sun was rising, Mantle was free of civilians. All that was left in the city was Grimm and all the Huntsmen that were in the kingdom when the attack started. He and Clover fought like a well-oiled machine; playing off of each other like they’d been partners for years. No one would ever replace Summer, of course, but he thought she would’ve loved Clover.
She definitely would be bugging him about finally making a move if nothing else.
Qrow gave one final shot to the sphinx in front of him before the street went quiet, the only sounds being their labored breathing and the distant shriek of other Grimm dying. He took the chance to bend over, resting his hands on his knees as Clover called in this sector being clear. He gave a chuckle at Qrow’s position. “Getting tired, old man?” He teased, and Qrow glared from under his fringe.
He stood up, flicking his bangs back from his eyes like he used to do at Beacon, before shooting him a smirk. He took a bit of pleasure from the light flush on the Ace Ops face. “We’re the same age, boy scout.” Clover waved his hand, and Qrow had to bite back the grin wanting to slip onto his face. He was way too head over heels for his Ace Op, he had to admit.
Just as they were about to move onto the next sector, Clover’s earpiece dinged again. He held a finger to his ear a moment, a look passing over his face too quickly for Qrow to decipher before he was turning back.
“Mantle’s clear, for the moment. All Huntsmen in the city have orders to stay and guard the breach, so the city doesn’t get overrun again.” Clover hesitated for a second, before continuing. “The Ace Ops have been called back to Atlas.” Qrow let out a breath through his nose, nodding.
“So, this is it, huh?” He tried for a grin but it fell flat. He wasn’t afraid, but he was. He wasn’t afraid of the battle; he’d been in plenty enough to know what to expect, roughly. No, the only thing he was afraid of was the man in front of him, or rather, him not coming back. He knew it was a possibility; Qrow was going to be fighting Grimm but Clover was likely to be in the shit. He knew Salem would go for Atlas first. For the Winter Maiden, and for the Staff.
He wasn’t worried about that part, though. Penny was powerful enough on her own, but with the Maiden powers? He almost felt sorry for Salem.
No, he was worried about collateral.
Clover hesitated a bit before walking forward, setting both hands on Qrow’s shoulders. “We’re going to win this.” And he sounded so sure, for a second Qrow actually believed him. He knew life wasn’t that black and white, but if he had learned anything from the brave, beautiful man in front of him, is that hope wasn’t always a bad thing.
So instead of saying something snide and cynical like he usually would, he smiled, softer than he normally would, and skated his fingers across Clover’s cheek. “You bet.” Clover returned the smile, and for a heartbeat, they were the only people in the world, staring at each other on this empty street as the world fell apart around them.
Then an alarm sounded, high above them, and they were snapped back to the present. Clover dropped his hands and Qrow backed away, giving Clover a two-fingered salute as he headed toward the breach. He had only made it a few steps before Clover called out behind him.
“What, no kiss for good luck?”
And Qrow was never one to take chances. Little ones, sure. Some gambits he ran in combat, a few flirtations with a cute barmaid or a handsome waiter to see if he could get lucky, but he never took the big leaps. And maybe it was the battle high, or his nieces rubbing off on him, or how he hadn’t tasted alcohol in months and for the first time in awhile he didn’t want any, but before he could even question it, he was striding toward Clover with a thought that was something like ‘fuck it’ in his head.
He fisted his hands in Clover's collar, dragging him into a searing kiss that almost made him forget the snowflakes dusting his arms. They were surrounded by death and destruction and facing the biggest battle of their lives, but Qrow could say without a doubt that his first kiss with Clover was somehow perfect.
By the time they finally pulled away, Clover was out of breath and chuckling. His arms were tight around Qrow’s waist, and Qrow was cupping his face in a way he would deny later if anyone saw them. Their foreheads were pressed together, and Qrow could feel every breath Clover took fanning over his kiss-wet lips. Clover pulled back a bit, just enough to look in Qrow’s eyes directly.
“You better come back to me, pretty bird.”
Qrow dropped another lingering kiss on his lips.
“Only if you do too, boy scout.”
Fair Game Week Day 5: Hurt/Comfort
Clover had insomnia. It wasn’t something many (read: none) knew about him.
That was entirely on purpose. The life of a Huntsman was never an easy one, especially one in the military. The effect of the Huntsman lifestyle was a subject of much psychological study with a long list of results. Clover knew most of them, despite how little they actually teach huntsman and huntresses-in training about it.
Nightmares. Shakes. Flashbacks. Triggers. Hypersexuality. The list went on and on and somewhere on that list was insomnia. Clover wasn’t unique; he was one in the thousands of Huntsman who had to deal with something like this. He never complained; he knew just as others had it better than him there were others that had it worse. Not being able to sleep sometimes (more than sometimes) was getting off easy, in his opinion. And even on the days when he was running on little energy, his semblance compensated, so no one ever figured out that he didn’t sleep on a normal schedule.
He should’ve known that of all people, Qrow would notice. Especially since they had just started dating.
He didn’t say anything at first, because he hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary. After having a long talk about their pasts and respective baggage, they came to a mutual decision to take things slow. They went on regular dates, at first. Dinners and movies and walks in the park. PDA was slow going, but steady. So it made sense that Qrow didn’t put all the pieces together until they slept together for the first time.
They were basking in the afterglow, that lovely space of time where they were panting and cuddling and warm. It was well into the night, so it was barely a whispered question that Qrow was staying the night. He could feel the exhaustion, not just from the sex but from the activity all day; he and Qrow had been sent on a mission before their date and there was not an insignificant amount of fighting. By all accounts, he should be able to slip into sleep as easily as Qrow already had.
He wanted too. Gods, he wanted nothing more than to slip into a comforting sleep in the arms of the man he loved, to wake up rested and curled into him, trading sleepy smiles and kisses and contentment. He also knew that because he wanted it so bad, it definitely wasn't going to happen. He only managed to lay in bed for another hour before he was too restless, gently lowering Qrow’s head off of his shoulder and onto the pillow.
Usually, Clover would get in some late-night training in an effort to tire himself out, or at least occupy his mind, but he didn’t want to tonight. He felt bad just leaving Qrow alone in his bed after the night they just shared. Also, he was still physically tired, so he didn’t feel like training. After puttering around in the living room for a bit, he finally settled down in his armchair with a book, careful to cut on one of his smaller lamps.
He was around the 6th chapter before the door to his room clicked open, and he looked up with a slightly guilty smile as Qrow shuffled out, clad in nothing but a pair of Clover’s sweatpants, rubbing sleep from his wine-red eyes. “Feel like I should be a little offended.” He snarked, shooting Clover a wink to show he wasn’t serious. He traced his shoulder absentmindedly as he passed Clover, heading into the kitchen for a glass of water, it sounded like.
“It’s not a reflection on you, don’t worry.” He chuckled, marking his place before following him. The fluorescent light in Clover’s kitchen was harsh compared to the dull lamp in the living room, and Qrow squinted his eyes against the glare, leaning into Clover’s chest with a grumble. He chuckled, wrapping his arms around the bird’s waist and leaning back against the counter. They stood like that for a few minutes, the quiet hum of Atlas electricity the only sound surrounding them.
Finally, Qrow picked his face out of Clover's neck and squinted up at him, his attempt at being intimidating ruined by how he still wrapped himself around the other man. “What’re you doing up, boy scout?” Clover smiled, flicking a stray piece of hair out of Qrow’s eyes and kissing his forehead. He entertained lying but decided there would ultimately be no point. If he wanted more nights like this with Qrow (and he did, many, many more), he needed to be honest. Besides, Qrow would figure it out soon if he hadn’t already.
“Insomnia.” He shrugged, stealing a slip of Qrow’s water. He was hoping Qrow would understand and let it slide; he had to know what the deal was. He had been a huntsman just as long as Clover had, after all. He probably had his own mix of side effects and drawbacks from his life of hunting Grimm.
But Qrow just stared at him with those fathomless eyes.
He thought for a second that Qrow would try to sit down with him, ask him why he couldn’t sleep or why he wouldn’t try, like all the doctors and therapists and some of his old boyfriends had. But he should know better than to think he knew anything about what Qrow was going to do next.
Taking the glass back from him, Qrow tilted his head back until he finished it, setting it in the sink and grabbing Clover's hand. As they passed through the living room, Qrow snagged his book off the coffee table and switched the lamp off. He pulled them both back into bed, handing Clover his book as they curled together. “The lamp won’t bother me.” He rasped, tucking his face into Clover’s neck.
He sat frozen for a minute, holding the book dumbly as Qrow almost immediately fell back asleep. After a second, though, a fond smile crept onto his face. He ran a hand through Qrow’s hair, dropping a long kiss onto the top of his head before he cracked the book open again.
And when he woke up in the morning, he saw that his book was only a few pages ahead of where he opened it last night.
Maybe, sometimes, he could have those lazy mornings after all.
Fair Game Week Day 4: Birds/Soulmates
Soulmates, Qrow always thought, were complete bullshit.
Of all the literal magic in the world, Qrow thought that the concept of soulmates had to be one of the dumbest and most poorly-thought through. To begin with, not everyone even wanted a soulmate. Not everyone wanted someone to spend their life with, not everyone wanted to fall in love, not everyone wanted to get married and have 2.5 chubby little brats. He knew many a huntsman and huntress that were perfectly and completely happy without having someone waiting at home cooking them dinner and ironing their clothes.
(He used to try to convince himself that he was one of them, so he wouldn’t have to take the risk.)
Secondly, he thought if any two people were soulmates, it was his sister and Tai. They had almost every mushy trope going for them, from opposites attract to the angry and the ball of sunshine. He saw how his sister changed around him, how all her hard edges softened and the little delighted smiles she tried to hide slipped out whenever Tai did something stupid. Their love was the kind you wrote epics about, and for a second, Qrow thought he might have been wrong about this soulmate business.
And then Raven got pregnant, and it all went down from there.
Next thing he knew he had a niece and no sister, leaving a fractured family behind. Summer stepped up and Qrow stepped in and no one could say little Yang wasn’t loved, but Qrow could say confidently that he definitely didn’t believe in soulmates. Especially when Summer and Tai finally got their shit together and got together, because that only proved his point. Summer wasn’t Raven and Tai wasn’t the same as he used to be, and together they were different but they were also good.
And then Summer left on a mission, and never came back.
He loved Tai, he loved his nieces, his tiny little family that was still surviving against all odds but he still thought, without a doubt, that soulmates were still some saccharine fairytale made up for sappy romance books and to comfort the lonely masses.
And then, he met Clover.
And NO, this isn’t some cliche story where he meets Clover and realizes they’re perfect for each other or anything like that. In fact, at first, Clover and Qrow fit together like oil and water. That is, they didn’t.
Qrow is reserved, Clover is talkative. Qrow is cynical, Clover is optimistic. Clover is so damn arrogant some days Qrow wants to rip that stupid pin off of his jacket and carry it to the top of a mountain in his bird form just so he could hear it roll down the cliffs when he dropped it. They don’t fit together perfectly, not at all, and it’s this reason that takes so long for Qrow to finally give their relationship a chance.
(Because no matter how much Clover annoys and infuriates him, he can’t deny how utterly gone he is on the Ace Op.)
The beginning of their relationship is rocky, and even more so than most. If Qrow’s semblance wasn’t screwing things up then they were bickering over where to have dinner or Qrow was groaning at Clover’s lame jokes or stupid puns. They could never wash dishes together because Clover thinks he keeps the water too hot and Qrow thinks he keeps it too cold. The same went for showers. They didn’t like the same cereal, or tv shows, or even the same type of coffee.
On the outside, they shouldn’t have worked. They had nothing in common.
But somehow, after the first rocky couple of weeks, they started working.
It was like their gears finally lined up and their relationship settled into something steady, something strong. It started with Clover deciding to take his showers at night, so Qrow could shower in the morning. They alternated dish days. They did a switch off on date nights, so two weeks out of every month Qrow got to pick the restaurant and vice versa. Qrow memorized how Clover took his coffee and found himself making the second cup without even thinking about it. Clover started picking up little things Qrow needed but didn’t tell Clover about. A new whetstone. A replacement mag for Harbinger. Hell, he even managed to replace a button on Qrow’s vest when it was torn off in battle.
It took a while to realize that the reason things were suddenly going so well is that they were trying. They were putting the effort into adapting to the other person. Qrow was making an effort to fit Clover into his life, and he did the same. And sure it took a while, but at a certain point, Qrow realized the two of them had meshed together so well that he didn’t have to try anymore.
If you had told Qrow twenty years ago that he would find someone he would honestly call his soulmate, he would have laughed in your face. But now he knew differently. Soulmates weren’t your ‘other half’; they weren’t this perfect person wandering Remnant that slotted into all your sharp edges perfectly without even trying, no. Because you did have to try. Because soulmates weren’t found.
Soulmates were made.
Fair Game Week Day 3: Family/Weapons
When he and Qrow first started dating, he honestly didn’t know what to expect from Qrow’s nieces.
He had guesses, of course. Clover considered himself a fairly observant man; he had to be, after all, to get where he was today. The Captain of the Ace Ops had to be observant, had to be able to assess any and all situations and enemies present to devise the best outcome. Clover was also top of his class in the Academy, but he wasn’t one to boast, no matter how much Qrow claimed he was a show-off.
Clover never bothered to tell him that he was only really a show-off around him. Qrow would no doubt make a joke about him peacocking or something.
He figured Yang would be the overprotective one. The one that would pull him aside and give him some sort of threatening talk so he wouldn’t hurt her Uncle. It didn’t take an extremely observant person to see how much they cared about Qrow. He was glad that they did, but he fully expected a shovel talk of some sort from the brawler.
Ruby, he thought, would be confused. Skilled huntress though he knew her to be, he figured she would still be innocent in terms of romance and love. She was only 17, two years younger than the rest of her team, and he figured she didn’t really have an opportunity for awkward crushes and teenage flirtations after being thrown into the thick of the war at 15.
Of course, all of his expectations were shot from the moment the kids found out about him and Qrow. Honestly, he should have expected as much from this group. They tended to do exactly the opposite of what was expected of them.
His first surprise didn’t come from either of Qrow’s blood-related nieces. No, it came in the form of one Weiss Schnee.
He had never met the former heiress before, despite being reasonably acquainted with her sister and the both of them living in Atlas in somewhat intersecting social circles. He met her at the same time as all the others and, while Clover liked to think he was open-minded and non-judgmental, he expected her to act like...well, a Schnee. Maybe not the cruel and cold caliber of her father, but at least the disciplined and shrewd perfection of her sister. But after knowing her for a few weeks, Clover realized that the title of ‘black sheep’ of the Schnee family didn’t go to Winter, as he previously thought, but wholeheartedly went to Weiss.
Despite her icy exterior and structured battle tactics, Weiss was the opposite of cold.
She showed her affection freely with her teammates, whether that be in compliments after a battle or a fond smile after Ruby or Yang made a stupid joke. She trained with her partner and had tea with Blake and went shopping with Yang and generally treated her team as her family, and the other four of their ragtag group as well. It didn’t take him long to realize that her radical love was her own form of defiance; she shook off the cruelty of her past with the exact opposite: care, warmth, laughter, and acceptance.
So when she cornered him at 7pm, just outside the training rooms, he was a bit embarrassed to say he didn’t have a clue of what to expect.
At first, she didn’t say anything. Her arctic gaze practically pinned him to the spot. He could almost feel the sweat on the back of his neck freeze with the force of it. She seemed to be deliberating something, and just as he opened his mouth to clear the air, she spoke.
“You care for Qrow, don’t you?”
Whatever he was thought she was going to say, it wasn’t that. “I...yes. I do.”
She let out a soft ‘hmm’ and her eyes began to appraise him. He felt like he was being examined by one of his former Professors after a spar; like she was trying to assess if he was good enough. A buzz went down his spine that he belatedly realized was nerves. He was nervous, no, he was downright a little afraid of the 19-year-old, newly minted Huntress in front of him.
“So do we. All of us.” She took a steady breath, eyes darting around as if searching for something malevolent hiding in the shadows. For a second, Clover’s mind flickered back to their first mission together, right before the kids got their licenses and the sudden appearance of Jacques Schnee at the Amity site. He thought Jacques might have been a bit less of an asshole to see his wayward daughter, to know that she was at least alive. He was wrong. Their reunion was nothing short of antagonistic and manipulative, and the breath Weiss let out as soon as her father was out of sight spoke volumes of their relationship. He wondered if she was looking for him in the shadows; if she had a bit of lingering fear that he was going to drag her away from everything important to her.
“Qrow was there for us when no one else was. He wasn’t perfect at it,” She let out a small chuckle. “But he was always there to defend us. From Grimm, from Salem, even from our own demons.” Her hand came up to rub at the opposite elbow. “He’s been through a lot, and the last thing he needs is someone to break his heart.” She took a step closer, and all traces of the slightly unsure teenager left her face, leaving behind nothing short of steel.
“So don’t.”
Her gaze was unwavering, and Clover found himself nodding before he even realized he was doing it. “I have no intention of breaking his heart, Weiss.” She had him pinned to the spot for another moment as if trying to figure out if he was lying or not, before she leaned back, a smile on her face, and Clover felt the slight tension in the air bleed away.
“Good.” She said, before turning on her heel primly and walking away.
The next morning at breakfast, Jaune slid him a cup of coffee with a smile before carrying his and Marrow’s off. Ren asked to train with him the next time he was free, and just as he was agreeing Nora walked by, giving him a slap on the back so hard that it almost made him spill his coffee, and asked if she could join for a 2v1 with a grin. Yang snickered when he let out a rare yawn, asking if he had had a tiring night before Blake could stop her, even though he caught a wicked grin on the faunus’s own face. Ruby, to his surprise, snickered along with them, asking if he’d had a long night of using his rod, which did make him spill his coffee and had the rest of his own team, the traitors, break into guffaws.
The laughing cut off abruptly as Qrow entered, rubbing his eyes with a grumble as he stole a sip of Clover’s coffee and dropped a kiss on his cheek, and this time Clover caught the small, happy, smiles that all the kids sent their way when they didn’t think him and Qrow were paying attention.
Fair Game Week Day 2: Date/Domestic
When Clover asked Qrow out (finally, some unnamed annoyances might say) he knew immediately that it would go wrong.
But for once, it wasn’t Qrow’s fault at all. No, the blame laid entirely, and he says this with love, on his nosy, meddling nieces and nephews.
He didn’t tell any of the kids about his impending date. Some of the reason was nerves; he didn’t need any more reason to be flustered and worried about what to wear than his unfairly attractive and confident date. The other reason was that he knew how involved they would all try to get if they knew.
Yang would waste no time in congratulating him and wiggling her eyebrows, making some sort of euphemism of them getting lucky tonight. Ruby would be ecstatic and shiny-eyed, wanting to know all the details of how it happened and what led up to it. Weiss would be overprotective, all narrowed eyes and icy voice as she tried to suss out whether or not Clover was good enough for her uncle. Jaune would act the same as Ruby but would ask if he was actually going to date Clover, and little things about his personality and why Qrow was interested in him. Nora would threaten to break his legs if he broke Qrow’s heart, Oscar would sheepishly rub the back of his head and apologize for not being able to give him Oz-advice, and Ren and Blake would smile fondly and shake their heads at their teammates, but Qrow had no doubt in his mind that they would do a deep-dive for info on Clover and possibly stalk him to determine if he had good intentions.
He loved his kids, he really did, but they could be a bit overbearing. And if the Ace Ops found out as well? He and Clover would never find any peace.
So he didn’t tell them. Any of them. That begs the question, of course, how ALL of them found out anyway.
Clover agreed not to breathe a word of their night out either, and they both had iron-clad excuses for their absence the night of. They even left the Academy separately, not coming together until they were a few miles from their restaurant of choice in Mantle, where they walked hand-in-hand, quickly barreling through the meaningless first date talk that they had already exhausted since being partnered up.
Clover was in the middle of asking if he would rather ride a Nevermore or the top of an Atlas airship when Qrow noticed something amiss. The street they were walking on wasn’t deserted by any means, but there weren’t as many people as usual since it was nearly night and the temperature was dropping. So it wasn’t too hard to spot the young duo walking on the opposite side of the street.
Qrow had to give them credit, they picked the most non-assuming of the group to send out in the open. Blake and Ren were the least likely to draw attention and were the easiest to blend into a crowd of civilians, especially sans-battle gear. They strolled casually down the sidewalk, hand-in-hand and chatting quietly, To anyone but Qrow, they just looked like a couple of sweethearts on a date. He wasn’t sure if he should be impressed with their forethought and skill or exasperated with their spying.
He picked exasperated.
Qrow let out a slow sigh, not wanting to alert the kids to him noticing them but not being able to help himself. Clover noticed with a small frown, tugging him to a stop at the mouth of an alleyway. “Are you alright?” He asked but Qrow was already resting a hand on his shoulder in reassurance.
“I’m fine, boy scout. More than fine, this is...amazing.” Clover gave him that soft little smile that was probably one of Qrow’s favorite sights in the world. “But it looks like the kids got wind of us going out tonight.” He gave a minute jerk of his chin over Clover’s shoulder. The Ace Op gave a small chuckle as if he expected this to happen (Qrow wouldn’t be surprised if he did). “They’ll probably follow us to the restaurant, or at least camp out across the street from it.” He sighed again.
He expected to feel more annoyed than he actually did, but mostly he just felt fond. It had been a long time since anyone other than the girls and Tai had cared this much about him and his happiness. For a long time, they were the only three people in the world he actually gave a damn about, including himself. But suddenly instead of two nieces, he had eight nieces and nephews that he loved fiercely, and who, apparently, loved him just as much. It was still an adjustment, but he’d do anything for his kids, and it touched him that they would do the same.
Clover was looking at him with a glint in his eyes, though, and Qrow was suddenly hit with such a surge of affection for the man in front of him that it nearly drove him to his knees. Despite how chilly the Mantle air around them was, thinking about those kids, his family, and Clover in front of him had him feeling warm enough for a full-blown grin to sneak onto his face.
Clover returned it, a bit confused but happy to see him happy, and followed him willingly as he pulled him deeper into the alley behind them. “Qrow-” He gave a delighted laugh as Qrow let go of his hand and did a smooth leap to the roof in front of them. Qrow peered over his shoulder, tossing him a smirk.
“Screw the candlelit dinner.” He said. “Let’s have some fun.” And he took off, sprinting and leaping across the Mantle skyline. He heard Clover’s disbelieving laugh behind him, but when he looked over his shoulder his boy scout was already catching up to him. Qrow didn’t know if the kids were gonna follow them, and he didn’t really care.
And if he and Clover decided to go back to Clover’s apartment and cuddle under a blanket while watching trashy romcoms after only an hour of rooftop jumping, well, the kids didn’t need to know that part.
Fair Game Week Day 1: Flirting/Semblances
The first time Clover flirted with him, his semblance was already in the process of ruining things. As usual.
One would think that a trained Huntsman with 30+ years of experience would be able to not trip over nothing, but Qrow was well-used to his semblance breaking any and all rules he thought were immovable. Nevertheless, Qrow could only be pulled back up as Clover caught him, helping him find his feet in a way that left their faces centimeters apart. A heartbeat passed where everything was silent, and all he could see was the deep, deep teal of Clover’s eyes, so close to his own. Then he was walking away, scanning for their target, and all Qrow could do was give himself a half-hearted scoff.
So maybe that wasn’t technically flirting, but whatever.
The second time Clover flirted with him, it was right after his semblance nearly killed the Ace Op. As if the universe itself was warning Qrow: bad idea. You know what happens to the people you care about. Haven’t you nearly killed the kids enough times to learn that lesson? Or does he need to die too? So whether it was guilt or something lighter, something sharper driving him, he was telling Clover about his semblance before he could stop himself.
And Clover, well…
First, he thought he was being dismissive. He was almost crushed by a falling beam, a beam Qrow knew was all his fault, and was carrying on as if nothing had happened. And then Clover had effortlessly found them a way down, and he was revealing his own semblance, and all the breath left Qrow’s lungs, leaving him staring after the other man in shock. The semblances were mirror-images, exact opposites of each other. And that traitorous voice that always sounded a bit like Summer piped up in the back of his head:
Maybe this one will be different. Maybe he’ll be safe.
He lost track after that. Lost track of the winks and salutes, of the sudden rainstorms and broken glasses, of the lingering touches and the stubbed toes, the sudden trips and the rare lingering hug.
Qrow found that he was dropping the running tally of guilt in his head whenever something went wrong on a mission. When a tire popped or a shot missed on a supply run his mind didn’t go to ‘misfortune’ or ‘my fault’. Instead, it followed Clover and his easy shrugs and beautiful grins, and Qrow was soon wholeheartedly agreeing with the Ace Op’s assessment that it was just one of those things that happened sometimes, and maybe life isn't all good all the time. And maybe that was okay.
He let himself lose track of what his semblance caused because he was finding all he wanted to think about nowadays was Clover’s small smile when he didn’t deflect a compliment, or the wrinkles around his eyes when Qrow managed to get him to give a full belly laugh with his head thrown back. The proud look on Clover’s face when Ruby and Weiss pulled off a combo move in combat that he helped them perfect.
The way he always fell asleep curled into Qrow but woke up on his stomach, sunlight from the cracked curtain tangling through his hair, pointing out the touches of gray around his temple. Clover’s hands on Qrow’s hips as he made them both coffee, muttering his schedule into the back of Qrow’s neck.
Instead of looking away with a pit in his stomach when Jaune managed to spill his and Marrow’s coffee all over the floor that morning, he found himself chuckling along with the rest of his kids and teammates, catching Clover’s eye and returning his wink as they got ready for another day of saving the world.
They sleep 4 to a bed now.
It’s a tight squeeze, to be sure, especially given most of the time they’re sleeping on planes, or in empty houses as they make their way to Atlas. They all have different reasons.
Weiss gets worse and worse, the closer they get to the capital. None of them ask, but somehow all of them know. Just how all of them notice when she subtly flinches whenever Qrow raises his voice, or Jaune punches something in frustration. Yang curls tighter around her during the night, unblinking blue eyes staring over her shoulder until dawn.
Blake is always grasping hands and curling fingers, she clings to Ruby’s back, hands twisted in her shirt. She’s not leaving this time, but she’s afraid to be left alone. She’s tired of running; she doesn’t want to run after them and beg them to take her back if they decide they don’t want her, after all.
Yang gets nightmares, because of course she does. As if they didn’t have enough to worry about with relics and maidens and immortal bad guys. She dreams about Beacon, and Adam, and blood and Blake on the ground, reaching, crying, I’m sorry. Weiss shuffles closer, tucking her head into Yang’s neck just so, and her scent fills Yang’s nose, bringing her back to the tiny bed they’re all piled in.
Ruby shakes. Sometimes it’s because of the cold. She’s not used to this bitter winter, having grown up in Patch, but isn’t it just the perfect metaphor? She’s scared to sleep, afraid to wake up and find she’s lost all of them again. She hooks her leg around Weiss’s, and tries to quiet her trembling. Her team knows her inside and out, now, and they all shuffle closer to keep themselves warm.
For those wondering, yes I'm still alive. Due to personal life stuff and lack of inspiration I haven't been posting much. I don't know when this will change, but if figured y'all deserved an update.
If Weiss had her way, she'd have never set foot in Atlas again.
It was almost sickening how well the knew the sites of the capital city. The spires, the arches, the pristine whiteness of every inch, like they couldn't stand imperfection.
She tightened her ponytail.
Her team looked out of place, strolling down the shining streets. Ruby's cloak had been ripped ever since they reunited, and her leggings were just getting worse with each fight. The civilians wrinkled their noses at the tears. Weiss thought they made her look fierce.
Yang's coat was nearly burned to shreds in their last battle, so she strolled down the street in just a short sleeve shirt, prosthetic on full display. Passing Atlesian soldier quirked their mouths in fake sympathy. She could almost hear them whisper 'poor little girl, didn't know what she was in for'. Weiss wanted to tell them about how hard Yang worked to regain her strength. About what she gave the arm up for in the first place. About how they wouldn't last two seconds against her.
Blake had never struck her as particularly brave, but Weiss was starting to realize that she was braver than all of them simply by existing. Her bow was long gone, but even Weiss herself couldn't imagine walking down the street in the human capital, announcing that you were a faunus with every step you took. There were hostile glances, sneers, shopkeepers hovering closer to their wares. 'What's that supposed to mean?'
A soldier near them shifted, just readjusting his stances, and Weiss found her hand on the handle of her sword.
She took a deep breath, and shifted her ponytail farther to the right.
