No one has lived through drama unless they were a kid growing up in the Disney era of 2005-2011.

thoughts on the cheryl outing moose storyline?

It was stupid and contrived and another example of the show just using Cheryl to further other people’s plots, regardless of if her actions make any sense for her character or not. Like, in what universe would a girl whose abusive mother’s homophobia made her repress her sexuality for years, whose mother put her in conversion therapy when those feelings resurfaced, and whose mother was trying to ruin her plans for the future simply because she’s a lesbian that very episode, need homophobia - especially from a parent or parental guardian - explained to her? Would not understand why someone with a homophobic parent would be hesitant to come out of the closet? Wouldn’t know that outing, no matter the intentions, is wrong? There are certainly gay or bi people that don’t get it, because their experience coming out was a lot different, but it made no sense for Cheryl, in my opinion.

They should have had Kevin, who has been pushy and kind of judgmental about Moose being closeted, not Get It (not out him, but continue to be a bit pushy and take it personally) and have Cheryl give Kevin some perspective from her experience in the closet, like speculated after the promo showed they had a scene together, so he could talk to Moose and had the rest of it play out as it did, with the Moose/Cheryl scene being a nice moment between them, lamenting their similarities and being happy for one another or something, since they needed someone to know where they were. I get that they needed Cheryl to fuck up to facilitate the rest of her/Choni’s storyline that episode, but there’s a plethora of things about relationships and just generally being a kind person that Cheryl would not understand that they could have used, instead of the one thing she would understand better than any other character on the show, just because they wanted to push another storyline further too.

But if I ignore all of that, and just give my opinion on it as it played out, it was handled decently, I suppose. I had been anxious about the Choni storyline for the episode, so I had come up with my worst case scenario a week ago, so that anything less than that would be a relief, and wouldn’t you know, I had randomly come up with Cheryl outing Moose. Except in my scenario, it had been her being so upset about the college thing, that she purposely sent Moose’s dad into the room she knew he and Kevin were in to ~cause chaos or something else that would regress her further. So the fact that she did it without naming names and with good intentions (though completely misguided), was at least better than that. And I’m glad they immediately had Toni call her out on it, had her realize how wrong it was and sincerely apologize to Moose. Not to mention that nobody suspected it was Moose and that Moose got to tell his father on his own, as opposed to him overhearing it and suspecting it was him. That’s better than it’s been handled on certain other shows (see Finn outing Santana to shame her and then getting to be the hero of the story without ever apologizing), and better than it was apparently handled in Britta’s book, so.
