Concept statement

5. Aesthetic judgement is an essential part of community building and friendship. Discovering you like the same band/film/food as someone builds a social bond seemingly far more solid than agreeing with someone on facts (such as who the prime minister is). How can culture be used to generate community, and conversely, be used to exclude or marginalise people? To what extent are aesthetic judgements individual or learnt behaviours?

The way in which someone dresses, acts and speaks as well as their interests all define who a person is and having similar interests and things in common with someone generates a community where all the individuals are in actuality very similar. Most youth subcultures are characterized by their aesthetic varying from the way they dress to their desires and ways of life. The Greasers, Hippies and Punks all had dissimilar styles however they all shared common ground in their desire to be different and rebel against the traditional and common ideals, beliefs and fashions during the 1950’s through to the 1970’s. During the time that these youth cultures arose, so did the art movement of Pop Art and artists such as Andy Warhol became fascinated in celebrity culture, mass production as well as mass consumerism. Because of this interest, Warhol incorporated the faces of famous icons in his artworks.

My work ‘Similarity: Greahipunk’ incorporates famous, influential celebrities just as Warhol did however; I desired my work to address and look at the famous stars that were a part of the different subcultures and how significant these icons were influencing the fashion, music as well as the actions of everyday individuals that admired them and, therefore generating a culture community of people with several similarities. Written communication was a large part of pop artworks and many artists incorporated text into their works as they wanted to include the techniques of mass consumer advertising. In order for my work to not only incorporate the artistic style and techniques from the time of the subcultures but to also be relatable to individuals living in the 21st century, I not only used Warhol as a source inspiration but also the typography work of Sean Williams who creates images of popular 21st century celebrities using only text. Placing myself in the shoes of Williams and using the same techniques and artistic practice as he did, I used fonts of different colours and styles and arranged the text in the popular editing programs of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to create three separate typography artworks of famous celebrities within subcultures. I took famous celebrity portraits off the internet and used them as the basis of the design my work. Then, typing each word one by one and carefully arranging the text in the shape of a face of a celebrity, I understood as an artist the techniques used by Williams. Borrowing the same presentation method as Warhol, I then decided to display my work as copies of each other within a museum similar to Warhol’s ‘Marilyn Diptych’ in order to represent the sub cultural communities and their similarities through the duplication and repetition of the same image.

‘Similarity: Greahipunk’ considers the context and time of the subcultures and other artworks from the 1950’s to the 1970’s as it incorporates not only popular images of sub cultural celebrities from the time but also the pop art style and advertising techniques from the 1960’s such as text, bright colours and a bold, graphic style similar to the works of Andy Warhol and Barbara Kruger. I desired for my work to also consider other artworks in the time it was being created in therefore the popular art making process involved in 21st century typography and graphic design such as Photoshop was used. Both artists were interested in their desire for freedom in the subject matter and creation of their artworks, relating to the freedom the subcultures wanted in their dress style and their ways of life.

Through my concept and exploration of celebrity culture and their influences on the aesthetics, interests and beliefs of subcultures from the 1950’s to the 1970’s I have portrayed to the audience a theme of aesthetic similarity present within subcultures in my work ‘Similarity: Greahipunk’ .

DESIRE

Both Warhol and Sean Williams as well as Stefan Sagmeister have the desire to be free in their creations and to be different, aesthetically in their works. This is similar to the subcultures who wanted freedom in the way they dressed and expressed themselves. They wanted to have the control, similar to the artists.

My desire is to create a work that is inspired by Sean Williams and Andy Warhol yet also expresses the concept that all subcultures have similarities and that everyone within those subcultures, including the subcultural celebrities are somewhat similar in the way they dress and speak to their ways of life and beliefs.

EXPERIMENT: ALIEN METHODS, BODY POLITICS, CONTEXT AND TIME, UNCREATIVITY

I used Sean Williams art making practice and techniques by creating a typography work of a celebrity using text. I have created this on photoshop and illustrator, taking on the shoes of the artist. I also copied Andy Warhol's Pop Art artworks, using bright colours and repeating the same image of a famous icon.

I downloaded text off the internet and installed it into photoshop in order to create my work. Using paths on photoshop I drew over Elvis' image which I took from the internet, incorporating uncreativity and then inserted the text in the shape of his face.

This work is similar to Pop artworks from the 1960's as well as 21st century graphic design artworks. This work reminds me of the posters created for the 51st Grammy awards.

I like this artist as he is similar to warhol in the way he uses different colours of text as well as famous icons.

This artist would be good inspiration as my BOW wouldn't only incorporate art from the time of the subcultures (1950-1970) but people from the 21st century could also relate to this more modern art form/style

Sean Williams is a graphic designer that has created several works of celebrities using typography. I could use this artists techniques and style but instead of using 21st century celebrities, I could use famous celebrities from the subcultures in the 50's and 60's, therefore I am considering the context and time of the subcultures. Roy Lichtenstein andBarbara Kruger also used text and written communication in their works so I think Sean Williams is a good artist to use as a source of inspiration

Stefan Sagmeister could be a possible inspiration for my final BOW as he works with the COFA topic of desire. Using his technique of photoshopping text onto images (such as the image above), I could copy his style and take on his techniques i.e Alien Methods

ALIEN METHODS: taking on the style of Andy Warhol and his use of celebrities and colour, I decided to create my own Elvis Warhol artwork. I used similar colours and techniques that Warhol used incorporating ideas of celebrity culture as well as mass consumerism

CONTEXT AND TIME: This work fits into the Pop Art movement during the 1950's and 60's and Elvis Presley was also famous during this time so they both go hand in hand.

UNCREATIVITY: I have incorporated uncreativity by copying Andy Warhols artistic techniques and style as well as by taking a mass produced image of Elvis Presley from online.
