Rights are never exercised in isolation, because they always have a bearing on those around us. We must never miss the sociological implications of the cross. It’s not a question of what one can or cannot do. It’s a question of how to serve others and live a life that makes the gospel compelling.

God is sharing his divine identity with the Son, Jesus Christ. And in a similar way Jesus shares his glory with his people—the community of God. The mutual interior deference, love, and sharing within the community of the Trinity between God the Father and God the Son has now become the basis for the community of God’s people to share their rights and to revolve around others’ needs rather than standing statically and expecting others to orbit around them.

I look back on the discomfort of that moment now and recognize the universal challenge of squaring who you are with where you come from and where you want to go. I also realize that I was a long way, still from finding my voice.

What is the glory of the Lord? His glory is the fiery radiance of his very nature.10 It is his blazing beauty. At Mount Sinai “the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire” (Exodus 24:17). Ezekiel saw the glory of the Lord in the form of a supercharged war chariot coming down from Heaven to establish the rule of God on earth (Ezekiel 1:4-28). When Jesus was born, the glory of the Lord shone around the shepherds, and they were terrified (Luke 2:9). The Bible also says that Jesus himself is the ultimate display of the glory of God (John 1:14). His transfiguration unveiled his glory (Luke 9:28-36). But also — this is the irony of the gospel — when Jesus hung on the cross in shame, we were seeing the glory of God (John 13:31).
