âCome on, Phaedra!â A soft voice called out, which made a pair of blue eyes dart up from their book. She had long curly hair that was swept up into a high ponytail, and she wore a simple navy dress (which she had reluctantly put on at her motherâs insistence.) Her expression lit up when she recognized the prince, and she started to close her book⊠only to give pause as her gaze shifted to her mother with cautious pleading hope in her eyes.
âMama⊠can I pleeeeeeeeease go play?â She requested, hands fidgeting with the book now.
Her mother had heard the prince as well, and wasnât surprised at all when her daughter asked to go play. She did sigh, though, and paused in her gardening to wipe her brow, âMy, any chance to get away from your studies⊠Hm⊠alright, but remember your manners, Phaedra. Heâs not just your playmate, but the prince-â
Her eyes lit up and she set the book down on the blanket she had been sitting on without missing a beat and bolted to her feet, âYes, mama!â
â-and try not to rip your dress! Money is tight these days!â
That caused her nose to wrinkle a bit with annoyance, but she nodded, âYeeeeees, mama⊠Okay, love you, bye!â Taking a bit of her skirt in hand, she raced off towards the Prince.

âOf all the aspiring recruits, Captain, why in gods names did you go with⊠that one?â A man sneered, âHeâs so scrawny, do you seriously believe he can keep up with the others?â
âScrawny frames can be trained, Lieutenant, strength can always be cultivated. Iâm looking for more than muscle for this rising troop, Iâm looking for passion, an unrelenting flame,â The captain explained, âWhen I look into that kidâs eyes, I see that fire in him.â
The lieutenant let out a sigh, âI mean no disrespect, sir, you know that⊠I just donât see what youâre seeing. That kid wonât last much longer than a week, guaranteed.â

âPhwa-!â Blood speckled the dirt as the cadet spat at the ground. His teeth were tinged pink, his cheek was bruised and busted open, and gods, did his ribs hurt, but he didnât seem anywhere near close to quitting yet, âAgain!â
Thud
âHah⊠Hah⊠Again!â
Fwump
â⊠A-Again!â
Thwack
âErrrghhh⊠Again!â

On the third day of spring one year, the city was bustling with excitement. Flowers were freshly blooming and arranged in ornate patterns, royal banners flapped in the warm breeze, and horns played triumphantly as half a dozen young men approached a dais in front of the royal palace. The palace gates had been opened wide just for this occasion, and townsfolk had arrived eager to witness the new guardsmen be sworn in.
Their heavy boots thudded against cobblestone as they made their approach and shifted to stand in a row before the dais with choreographed precision. Their feet tucked in against each other as their spines straightened, their shoulders squared, and their heads were held high.
Various officers stood on the raised platform while lower ranking guardsmen flanking the sides. Three figures were positioned in the middle: the Queen, her presiding captain, and the soon-to-be-crowned prince. The crowd around them cheered for the display, only quieting once their queen lifted a hand to silence them. In her other hand rested a sleek wooden box, âThank you all for gathering here today. It is with great excitement that we gather here to witness these young men officially take their oaths to the crown and join the ranks of these esteemed guardsmen you see behind me. It is thanks to their dedication, resilience, and commitment to honor that have brought these young men to stand here before you all today,â and then she addressed the cadets directly, âI applaud you all for your triumph over this process, and wish you nothing but greatness.â
âNow,â she then turned to her captain, âWithout further ado, letâs proceed,â and then she opened the box to reveal six glittering medals nestled into navy velveteen lining.
The captain of the guard then took the reins and began calling up the cadets one by one. Each one ascended the handful of steps onto the dais, repeated the sacred oath, their medal was pinned to their lapel, and then it was publicly announced where they would be serving. A couple were announced as placed within the palace grounds, others received stations around town. No matter their station, the crowd cheered all the same.
âPeter Odeene.â The cadetâs shoulders tensed as he was finally called, and he approached the dais just as the others had. He was tall, though not quite as tall as his fellow cadets. His muscle tone was a bit leaner, with shoulders that were broad yet lacked some of the visual bulk that one might expect of a soldier. His short curls had been gelled down to make himself look a bit more neat and presentable.
He stopped in front of his commanding officer, his gaze fixed over the captainâs shoulder instead of making eye contact, âPeter Odeene⊠You are called here today to swear your allegiance and serve the Crown. If that is still your intention, then repeat these words back to me with sincerity⊠âBefore the Crown and all who bear witnessââŠâ
âBefore the Crown and all who bear witness,â Peterâs voice cut through the hushed silence and filled the space.
âI give my solemn oath-â
âI give my solemn oathâŠâ They continued like that for another minute or so until the oath was complete, finishing with, âBy my honor, by my blood, and by the Crown, this oath is sworn.â
The captain of the guard then reached out to pin the medal to his lapel, clapped his shoulder, âSo let it be - I now present Guardsman Odeene⊠who shall serve the royal family directlyâŠâ a couple gasps sounded from the crowd, âand shall continue his training in order to one day succeed me and serve the prince upon his coronation day.
Peterâs eyes went wide and he broke decorum to make eye contact with his captain in a silent question. âAre you sure?â
His captain merely grinned and squeezed his shoulder, âAnd with that, letâs hear a round of applause for these esteemed guardsmen!â
The applause started up slowly and the gravity of what was just announced slowly let up, and then the townspeople erupted into cheering and roaring applause. Peter was stuck in place for a moment, stunned by his accomplishment. As he turned around to face the crowd, his eyes briefly met the Princeâs.

âYou would be correct,â Zephyr nodded, âSheâs worked since her youth to bring peace to the valley. However she has served the kingdom with her strength even when she was an adolescent. Sheâs bore blood sweat and tears for the kingdom, and deserves to let us thank her in return before her days are being measured.â His eyes glanced across the room, observing his mother chatting with some of the nobility that were more family friends.
The second swig of his drink he felt bubbles get caught in his throat and his words. Clearing it he set the glass down, âI have some grand shoes to fill, thatâs for certain.â His mother was the stuff of legend. Stories of her bravery echoed for as long as he had been alive. A princess of tremendous courage who prevailed amidst the conflicts between mages and man. Caught in the crossfire, she defended the kingdom walls from both. She wasnât even sixteen when it all happened. He could never imagine what that was like, fighting for something at such a young age. Something thatâs too often taken for granted.
Peter smiled, nodding his head in agreement, âI admire your mother a lot. Had she not been the heir, Iâd wager she would have been a great solider,â it may not be customary for women to take the oath, but there were a handful of tales of extraordinary women who surpassed the societal expectations that had been placed upon them.
He then watched as Zephyrâs eyes shifted to look to his mother, watch the way his expression warmed at the sight of her. He also watched the way the princeâs expression morphed with discomfort as the fizz of the champagne got caught in his throat. Concern flashed across his own expression for a brief moment, but he seemed to be fine so he allowed himself to relax and take in what the prince said next.
âItâs a daunting thing, taking on someone elseâs legacy. You and I have are both being tasked to do so,â he then reached out and lightly touched Zephyrâs shoulder, âThe shoes may feel a little bulky at first, but Iâm sure youâll grow into them with time. Your mother also isnât going anywhere, so youâll have her guidance to assist you in this transition⊠Iâm here as well, should you need any assistance.â
