the broken world is an open & collaborative au/shared verse designed for the pokemon rpc, as well as an ongoing (homebrewed) fabula ultima game in play-by-post format. More information can be found in the rules document. the broken world is facilitated & moderated by Calliope.

100 years ago, our world succumbed to Chaos. Our Heroes were vanquished; our Gods laid low. Slowly, steadily, it now creeps towards its inevitable End.

While we were at our most vulnerable, the cruel and unjust rose to power and now control what remains of our dying world. Great bastion cities stand as our last strongholds against the encroaching void and it's endless hordes. Our world is lorded over by men who offer salvation at a price—though they know as well as any that there is no such thing. What is there to do now but to kneel and to wait? 

(But perhaps... there may yet be hope for our forsaken world. The last embers found amongst in the ashes of what once was. There are those who still believe salvation can be found, out there in the forsaken lands where once there was life and light and joy. There are children born into this cruel world with nothing but doom promised to them... and yet, who still carry a spark of hope for the future. 

Go forth, brave children. Rage against the dying of the light.)

Ghetsis may spend 5 Ultima Points to invoke Remus' Curse—Remus perceives his allies as nightmare demons and must begin a conflict scene against them immediately, provided he is capable. (Allies Remus has a Bond towards may roll a check [Ally's WLP + Remus' WLP + Bond Level] and pacify him on a 15+. Otherwise, this effect ends when either Remus or his allies have all been reduced to 0 HP.) ???. 7 Ultima Points. Single Use. Something is revealed

The Story So Far...

Before our story begins, the young scholar Heidi discovers a mysterious tome, written in the Divine Language, hidden deep beneath the Great Library of Bastion Harmonia—a tome which, if deciphered, may be capable of changing the fate of our world. All Heidi knows is that it must be kept out of the King's hands at all costs—so she flees, taking the book and venturing out into the lands beyond the Bastion's protective borders in search of answers.

Meanwhile, the Silverwind, famed flagship of the Bastion's fleet of airships. Aboard is its crew, the Knights of the Silvervale—only one of whom survives. Remus, Silver Dragoon, succumbed to a mysterious curse. He slaughtered his compatriots, believing them to be demons, and crashed the ship. From it, he took its power source, a strange crystal-like stone: the Grey Dragon Soul. 

Seeing the crash, Heidi ran to see if her father, Captain of the Silverwind, was among the ship's survivors, where she meets Remus for the first time.

The End affected some lands more quickly than others. Some suffered greater losses than their neighbors. But most pale in comparison to Area Zero, the lands around the Crystal Bastion. It was there that the battle took place, one hundred years ago. It was there that Chaos took root, warping the planet into its twisted form.

The Crystal Bastion is the only true safe haven left. Those who spend too long outside of its barrier eventually succumb to corruption, turning into twisted monsters themselves. Others are offered "salvation" by an unknown god—their bodies are turned into crystal sculptures. Safe and sound. Forevermore.

The Crystal Bastion's culture is one of orphans and widows. Everyone has lost someone to Area Zero. Chaos closes in with each passing year.

lore: bastion harmonia

parallel to THE UNOVA REGION ongoing questline: NO KINGS, NO MASTERS

Before the End began, Bastion Harmonia—then, the great city of Castelle, home to the  noble Harmonia line, keepers of the Dragon Souls—was a haven for scholars. Many a great philosopher had once called Castelle home, and ideas that would revolutionize magic oft originated from this city. 

(The transformation from Castelle into the Bastion Harmonia begins just before the End.)

A cruel twist of fate cast their Prince in the leading role of this tragedy. When he was slain, there was a vacuum of power left behind. His companions, the Great Dragons, were Castelle's gods. They were the first to perish; and in their absence, Chaos quickly set in.

Those who seized power ensured their control was absolute. The enlightened people of  Castelle turned their eyes away from those who suffered the worst under their new kings; such people were beneath them. And so it went for centuries, until it became the Bastion Harmonia we know today.

The Great Mage, Ghetsis Harmonia Gropius, rules as King of the Bastion. His word is absolute. A privileged few may share in his wisdom; and the people of his Bastion may share in the arcane knowledge collected within its Great Library... should they prove themselves worthy. The Sage's College produces the greatest mages this world has to offer, as only the best and brightest—chosen by the Great Mage himself—are permitted to perform magic. 

(Pay no attention to those born outside of the Bastion, neglected and left to fend for themselves. Pay no heed to the stories about people who speak out against the King and are never heard from again. The dissenters are just discontented fools; nothing more.)

lore: the astral bastion

(parallel to THE GALAR REGION.)

It has been said that the greatest Heroes of this world are stars; fallen from the night sky when the wishes of many call upon them. And in their quest to forestall the end, the people of the Astral Bastion  have taken this legend to heart.

At the center of the Astral Bastion lies the Starfall Colosseum, a grand arena where warriors and battlemages of all stripes come to show their skills. Whoever triumphs over all other competitors is crowned the new Champion... and new Hero of the Astral Bastion! 

(In the early days of the End, perhaps a decade or so after the Heroes perished and Chaos began to creep into our daily lives, the Astral Bastion began a foolhardy undertaking: the Heroes' Tournament was born. Every year, the warriors of the Astral Bastion compete in battles, and the people watch on and cheer for their Champion; and with their support, their sincere wishes, their desire to live on, the magic of those wishes - through the ritual of the tournament itself - would transform that Champion into the true Hero they sought.

The Hero is nothing but a sacrificial lamb. Once they are crowned, it is the Hero's job to venture out of the Bastion, to find the Solution, to stave off the End. Most vanish within the year, never to be heard from again. A lucky and skilled few might survive multiple expeditions—but in a century, not one has even survived a decade since becoming Champion. The longest living Hero the Astral Bastion has known thus far is its current reigning Champion, who has survived only five years.

Still, the ritual continues. Changes are made. Perhaps this year will be the one. This is the only hope the Astral Bastion has for their dying world. Surely this Hero will save us.)
