Steve couldn’t remember the last time he’d danced either, but he didn’t say so. “You should dance more. Life’s too short.” He said, to the both of them. Steve glanced at Tony, seeing his smile made his heart light.
“Finally, something we can agree on. Hopefully life doesn’t get shorter for either of us anytime soon.” He met Steve’s eye and eventually came to a stop, dropping his hands away and clearing his throat. “It’s getting late. There’s plenty of spare bedrooms if you want to stay the night. The roads can get pretty dark out here.”
“I think I’ve tested fate one to many times, I’ll take you up on that offer.” He said, letting his hands drop to his side. He felt at home with the music playing, and in Tony’s company. He didn’t quite want to leave just yet.

Steve smiled a little to himself when Tony seemed to concede on the embarrassing factor. He smiled, thinking of all the old couples dancing. The song picked up in energy as it ended, and the next one began. The music was smoother, a slower tempo. It relaxed, and Steve did as well with the song. He stopped traveling as much, but still moved to the beat with Tony, who was picking up on following quite well. “Only swing.” He admitted. “Buck took me out enough to make something of me.”
Tony found himself smiling too as they danced. “Can’t remember the last time I danced like this,” he mumbled, following Steve’s lead as they slowed down a bit. “I guess it would’ve been the wedding,” he laughed. Neither he or Pepper were the type to really put on music and dance around their living room.

Steve shrugged a little, “I think the fact we didn’t die is a perfect reason to why we should be dancing in your living room.” He said easily. If Steve wasn’t embarrassed, he hoped Tony would slowly begin to feel that way.
Steve began to move around the living room a little, once Tony got his footing under him. Moving with the music. “We didn’t really have a name for this. I think people call it swing now.”
Tony huffed quietly, lips twitching into a smile. “Guess I can’t argue with that.” He kept up with Steve as they danced. He wasn’t completely useless on the dance floor, but he also wasn’t used to being led. “They do. Old couples like to go out to clubs these days and dance.” He looked down at their feet, relaxed a little more. “You’re not bad, Rogers. Didn’t peg you as much of a dancer.”

Steve shook his head, “I’m going to teach you to dance like I did in the thirties.” He said and reached to uncross his arms. “It’s a loose dance. First step is to relax.” He said and reached over to wrap one arm gently around his back. And he just swayed to the beat. “then you feel the music.”
Tony sighed and allowed Steve to pull his arms apart. He hesitated at first, looking at where his metal hand met Steve’s flesh. It was still kind of a trip, and Tony wasn’t quite sure how to feel about it. The only person he regularly had been touching was Morgan, and she thought Daddy’s robo-arm was the coolest thing in the world. He allowed himself to relax, resting a hand on Steve’s shoulder and letting Steve hold his other one, taking the lead. “This is stupid,” he sighed, but swayed in time with Steve.
“Why are you saying that?” Steve asked honestly, using a calm voice. Because Steve knew it wasn’t stupid- it was how Tony felt at the moment. “Because dancing isn’t stupid.” He said and waited for Tony to relax a bit more before continuing.
Tony rolled his eyes. “This. Us. Dancing in my living room like we didn’t all almost die a few weeks ago.” He stares at a point on Steve’s chest, feeling too strange to look him in the eye at this proximity.
Steve shrugged a little, “I think the fact we didn’t die is a perfect reason to why we should be dancing in your living room.” He said easily. If Steve wasn’t embarrassed, he hoped Tony would slowly begin to feel that way.

Steve smiled and stood a bit closer to him. “I’m going to teach you to dance. Properly.” He said with a grin.
He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. “I know how to dance… enough. I got by at my wedding.” He huffed indignantly.

“Stand up, Tony.”
The other eyebrow quickly met it’s other half, but Tony got to his feet and stood in front of Steve.
Steve smiled and stood a bit closer to him. “I’m going to teach you to dance. Properly.” He said with a grin.

Steve narrowed his eyes at Tony, but they glinted something mischievous. “Stand up.” He instructed.
Tony raised one suspicious eyebrow. “…Why?”
“Stand up, Tony.”
brooklyncptn:
Steve shook his head, “It’s not. Have you ever gone out dancing?” He asked curiously. Steve smiled then, “We did. And I got to go home, sort of. For a moment there.” He only saw a military base, but he saw Peggy.
“Gone out dancing as in your style of gone out dancing? Not so much. Back in my twenties, our version of going out dancing was a lot of grinding on each other at clubs. I don’t know if that quite fits the nostalgic idea in your head right now,” he smirked.
Steve narrowed his eyes at Tony, but they glinted something mischievous. “Stand up.” He instructed.

Steve stayed standing, swaying a little to the feel of the music.
“No, not in the same way. This world isn’t hard anymore. I understand it. It feels like home. But-“ he paused, to try and put it into words. “I’m nostalgic for a place I can never go again. As if your entire hometown had been destroyed in a fire and someone new built over it afterwards. The land is there but nothing looks the same. I can’t go back and visit.” He shrugged a little, peering over to Tony then. “I feel more drawn to things that still exist. The aesthetic or the music-“ he said and gestured to it. “This was what there was to do. Listen to music and go out dancing.”
He watched Steve rock back and forth on his feet with a smile. He wondered if the man even knew he was doing it. “Sounds awfully boring,” he said teasingly. “Nah, I get that. A lot of people still regard that time as a place they want to know. Pretty cool that you got to experience both, huh?” He smiled. “And hey, we both got to check out the seventies even if it was brief and we had a world-ending mission on our hands.”
Steve shook his head, “It’s not. Have you ever gone out dancing?” He asked curiously. Steve smiled then, “We did. And I got to go home, sort of. For a moment there.” He only saw a military base, but he saw Peggy.

Steve rolled his eyes, but he smiled. “It’s questionable, at best.” Steve said and moved to look through the records. He saw a few names he remembered, causing a soft smile to his lips as he thought back on nights listening to these bands play on the radio. “You’ve got some jazz.” He said, more to himself. He smiled and pulled out an album of Artie Shaw.
Steve placed the record on the player and turned it on, setting down the needle and letting the static then music fill the room.
“A little,” he conceded, crossing his arms and sitting down on the couch of an arm chair. He wasn’t as big a fan of the stuff as Steve, but then again, it’s not what he grew up with. He grew up on that 80s classic rock he so treasured, it would only make sense that Steve continued to hold a flame for the music of his time. “Is it still hard? Not living in the world you grew up in?” He knew what an insane learning curve it had to have been for Steve. He was there for a lot of it, teaching him basic tech and answering his questions about all the ways the world had changed since then back in their early avenging days.
Steve stayed standing, swaying a little to the feel of the music.

Steve followed and smiled when they got to his lab. “This wouldn’t be home for you without a lab.” He said, imagining his daughter farting around inside and causing havoc.
Steve entered the cabin and smiled as he truly got to look around. “It’s a beautiful home, Tony.” He walked through the living room and paused at a record played, a soft smile on his lips. “Does this work?”
“Thanks,” Tony smiled. It was still large for their little three-person family, but they had plenty of space, Tony had a nice office where he could get his less invasive work done, plenty of guest rooms for visitors and a nice play room upstairs for Morgan. He followed Steve into the living room, kneeling down to turn on the fireplace. “Hm?” He glanced over at the record player that sat on an end table. “Yeah. We don’t have a ton of records, but I’ve got a nice collection. A lot of it’s rock though,” he walked over and elbowed Steve teasingly, nodding to a shelf where a fair amount of records were sitting. “I know how much you love my music taste.”
Steve rolled his eyes, but he smiled. “It’s questionable, at best.” Steve said and moved to look through the records. Steve stood by to assist if Tony needed, but he didn’t outwardly help. He knew Tony could handle it.
Steve followed him easily, glancing out at the darkening property. “Are they empty?”
“Pretty much,” he shrugged. “Lots of open land, lots of trees. There’s some clearings around the property, a creek or two that runs off from the lake.” He walked around the side of the house where his garage stood. “And the workshop. Nothing really new there. Morgan loves to somehow sneak in and mess around with all my stuff though.” He laughed and then went back up onto the back porch and opened the door for Steve. “And now mine and Pepper’s second pride and joy. We designed the cabin ourselves. Definitely different from most of the homes in my life,” he laughed, looking around at the more rustic style of living he had gotten used to these past five years.
“Does this work?”
brooklyncptn:
Steve saw how much of Tony’s facade was just a means to distance himself and protect himself. He knew how much of a heart Tony truly had. Steve watched him curiously, “Are you going to give me a proper tour of this place?”
Tony sort of forgot Steve hadn’t been around before. “Oh, right, you haven’t really seen the new digs. Well, come on then,” He grunted as he got to his feet, still not always feeling completely mobile after the toll the snap took on his body. It felt similar to his initial recovery after the kidnapping in Afghanistan, even though Extremis and the Cradle had worked wonders on getting his body back up and running. “We’ve got about fifteen acres of land here. There’s some more properties across the lake, but it’s relatively secluded.” He walked along the lakeshore with Steve, pointing across the way to where some more houses could be seen in the distance. They were tucked away in the woods here, but the trees weren’t dense and there was plenty of open land to do whatever he wanted with.
Steve stood by to assist if Tony needed, but he didn’t outwardly help. He knew Tony could handle it.
Steve followed him easily, glancing out at the darkening property. “Are they empty?”
brooklyncptn:
Steve laughed and smacked his knees away playfully at Tony’s jest. “Your head is getting too big, soon your ego won’t fit inside.” He pointed out.
“Hasn’t that always been the case?” Tony chuckled and relaxed in the lounge chair, stretching peacefully. He had always played up the entire ego schtick, but deep down he knew Steve knew that.
Steve saw how much of Tony’s facade was just a means to distance himself and protect himself. He knew how much of a heart Tony truly had. Steve watched him curiously, “Are you going to give me a proper tour of this place?”
brooklyncptn:
“Im not sure it counts as flattery if I’m stating facts.” He sighed.
“Aw, you think I’m the smartest man alive? I’m touched. You’re the most annoyingly noble, for what it’s worth,” he smiles teasingly at him and bumps their knees against each other. “It’s okay. You can admit you just love to give me compliments. It’s infectious, I know.”
Steve laughed and smacked his knees away playfully at Tony’s jest. “Your head is getting too big, soon your ego won’t fit inside.” He pointed out.
