My name is Adriana and I am a Xicana artist based in Phoenix, Arizona. I enjoy drawing, painting, printmaking, not finishing screenplays and playing the same three chords on my guitar. The things I hope to accomplish through my art are improving myself as a human being, uplifting mi gente and above all, strengthening my community.
As the metal clicks into the guitar, my eyes follow the black cord down and onto the floor where it twists into neat circles and disappears into the shadows of the stage. Strum, tune, strum, shout. I still find sound check exciting as I grip the handle of Lucy’s chair, preparing for the mob behind me. She must have hated this, but I never stopped to ask and won’t start now. The sweat and breath and electricity that surrounds me weighs heavily on the air, impatient and stirring. But it is nothing compared to the next moment; that first chord that hits the room like a match striking the box. We ignite. All of us rise to the ceiling and fall back down with an awesome crash. We are dismembered, we are bleeding, we are smiling and coming back for more. Bodies thrash and come together, colliding and exploding over again as others collect their parts and put themselves back together. We are wild and angry as we scream the words long ago traced on the walls of our rooms. The words now traced on our arms. Here I am nothing. Here I am fluid. But in reality I am only half free. There is more tucked away in the corners of my body; hard to reach places that even I don’t know about. I look around and feel every empty crevice in the venue grow with each minute; the space between us and them.
