No one remembers when Noel first appeared in The Kaleidoscope Carnival. Some say he arrived with the carousel itself, on the same night the carnival first unfolded under the endless twilight sky. Others whisper that the carousel was built around him, as if the ride needed a guardian. Noel is the silent caretaker of the carnival’s oldest attraction: The Velvet Carousel, a massive, ornate ride of carved horses, stags, and strange creatures that seem almost alive. The music box that powers it never stops playing, a haunting melody that echoes through the midway long after the other rides fall silent. He dresses like a performer from another era—deep crimson fabrics, stitched sleeves, and a wide hat wrapped with braided ribbon. The outfit once belonged to the carousel’s original ringmaster, though no one knows how Noel got it. His pale face rarely shows emotion, and his eyes appear like dark, empty hollows beneath his glasses, as if they reflect nothing at all. Children are strangely drawn to him. When they wander too close to the carousel at night, Noel gently invites them to ride. The carousel animals move slowly at first… but the longer the ride lasts, the faster the music plays, and the more the carved creatures seem to breathe beneath the riders. Most riders step off laughing. Some step off… different, and a few are never seen again. They say if you stay near the carousel too long, you’ll start hearing the music even when it isn’t playing. They say the carousel horses sometimes change—new carvings appearing where old ones used to be. If you look closely, some of those wooden faces look far too human. Despite the rumors, Noel never leaves his post. Every night he winds the carousel’s ancient key and waits for the next rider with a quiet, patient smile, because the carousel must always turn, and the Keeper must always watch.
