Shifting from one side of his bed to the other, he heard his phone buzz as he slept. Slowly opening his eyes he faced his bedside table. He contemplated whether he should check his phone or go back to sleep. The urge to check his phone got the best of him as he felt his hand reach out to grab it. His phone lights up making him groan, slowly rubbing his eyes as he reads the time. 10:00. Who’s messaging me this early in the morning? He usually wakes up at eleven-ish, ten in the morning is too early for him. Opening up the new app he downloaded recently he saw your message. Slowly reading it, word by word. He was trying to understand what you typed as he was slowly expanding his English vocabulary. Gladly, he understood each word. Before typing a response, he checked out your profile. First your picture, then where you’re from, and lastly your username. “thisusserisnottaken?” He slowly read out loud as he tilted his head in slight confusion. That’s a weird username, but it’s kinda funny. He typed a response with sleepy eyes, making sure to write each word correctly before pushing send.
JJ123456789: Hahaha! Hello thisusserisnottaken :) Nice to meet you. You seem cool too and yes, my dog is very visible
He read the message before and after sending it to you, feeling proud of how he was able to type a whole message in English without anyone’s help. All the English his hyung is teaching him is helping him expand his vocabulary much faster. Namjoon was the one who told him about the app. Since Jungkook was trying to learn English, he thought Talk With Me could help him practice his spelling and pronunciation. Meeting new people from different parts of the world could really help Jungkook with his English. Jungkook seems to be enjoying the app, as Namjoon expected, but he needs to be careful. He is an idol after all. No one can find out his real identity in this app. That’s why he mostly lies about who he really is. Although he types messages as himself, he makes sure to not let information about him get out into the social app. Being Jungkook, the famous golden maknae of the kpop group BTS, he always needs to be aware of his reputation.
After reading over his own message a few times, he decided to start off his day since he’s already up. Pulling the covers off him, he stands up and stretches his body out. Closing his eyes he starts with his neck, slowly tilting his head both sides until he hears it crack. With a smile he continues with his back, arms, hips, knees, and fingers. When he’s finished he looks around the room. He could see both of his roommates, Jimin and Hoseok, sleeping peacefully on their own beds. Forming a smirk with his lips he steps closer to the both of them as he thinks of a mischievous plan. “FIRE!!!” He yells loud enough so they both hear. Jimin sits up startled while Hoseok groans as he knows he’s just playing with them. Jungkook laughs loudly as the both of them have different, yet funny reactions. Jimin glares at him as he lays back down and goes back to sleep. The maknae seriously loves to do these types of things to the other members. It’s very entertaining. “Sorry, not sorry” he says in English as he goes to the bathroom with his phone in hand. Opening the bathroom door he flicks on the lights switch and places his phone gently on the counter sink. He watches his phone slowly, making sure he doesn’t drop it in the sink while the water runs down. He begins his morning routine: using the toilet, washing his hands, brushing his teeth, and his face. While doing all those things, he hears another buzz coming from his phone.
[thisusserisnottaken is typing…]
thisusserisnottaken: Nice to meet you too! It’s cool that you’re up right now, since most people are offline. You’re the first person to respond to me here. So thanks for that
Is that too desperate? Too lame? You thought of what to write for a while now. You simply don’t know how to respond without seeming boring or showing that you don’t really have any friends. Deleting the text you were typing, you start off again.
[thisusserisnottaken]: It’s nice to meet you too, JJ123456789! I see from your profile you’re from East Mylenaiuwa? I’ve never heard of that place before.
[JJ123456789]: Yes. It’s a place near Welvberty
Hm. You google the place, out of curiosity, and nothing pops up. Was that person lying? Was the place a hidden part of somewhere? You didn’t know. Simply letting it slide, you typed a response.
[thisusserisnottaken]: Oh Cool! Sounds like a really nice place.
[JJ123456789]: It’s nice, yes. Very calm but not many people live here
[JJ123456789]: How about you? You live in New York?
[thisusserisnottaken]: That’s right
Your beautiful hometown is actually ______. After you became a graduated from your bachelors, you decided to move to another place. Start off a new life all by yourself. It’s nice to live on your own, but sometimes it gets a bit lonely. You thought about that many times. Not in the way of having someone there to love and live with— although you wouldn’t mind having someone truly love you from time to time. It’s the feeling of loneliness you get of not having many people around your age nearby. Most of your neighbors are old and retired people. But it’s alright. It’s a calm and peaceful place.
[JJ123456789]: New York is a really beautiful and colorful place!
[thisusserisnottaken]: Have you gone there?
[JJ123456789]: Once or twice, yes.
[thisusserisnottaken]: The rush of the streets is very entertaining somehow.
[JJ123456789]: It is. When I first went there I didn’t know what to expect. I saw so many people on the streets running and those yellow cars picking some of them up. Ahh I don’t know their names 😅
[thisusserisnottaken]: Taxis!
[JJ123456789]: Ahh Taxis!! I’m used to seeing all those people around since I live in a place similar to New York in a way
That’s when you thought ‘Didn’t he say he lived in a calm, peaceful place?’. New York gives you a slight excitement. It makes you feel the need to go outside and watch all the people rushing and bumping into each other as they try to get a taxi to take them to work— it’s kind of weird to think about that, but still. You were a bit confused at that message, but again, you let it slide.
[thisusserisnottaken]: Well that’s cool, JJ123456789!
[JJ123456789]: You stared at the username wondering lots of things. You were curious to know whether that person was a guy or a girl. You were also curious of knowing their name. You were curious of knowing what he or she looked like. You continued wondering if you should ask questions, and as you do.. you receive another text.
[JJ123456789]: So, thisusserisnottaken , Where did that ussername come from?
You remember where it came from and you simply chuckled while typing.
[thisusserisnottaken]: It’s a long story..
[thisusserisnottaken]: Where did JJ123456789 come from?
You waited and waited. Their response took longer than usual. But eventually, they responded.
[JJ123456789]: It’s a long story. ;)
He teased back at you and you smile as you scoff at their response. “Really?”
[thisusserisnottaken]: Nice one 👏🏻
[JJ123456789]: Thank you, thisusserisnottaken
That’s when you couldn’t take it anymore. You had to ask—
[thisusserisnottaken]: Hey, JJ123456789. It’s a bit weird typing your
username all the time. I was wondering if I could know your name?
You did it. Boom. Now you wait.
Sent. Read.
Typing. You wait eagerly for their text to finally arrive but once you finally think they’ll send the message, they go offline. Offline, really? A sigh escapes from your lips as you close the app. The only person that responds just went offline and just as you were about to know their name. Bummer. You place your phone beside you on the bed as you look up the dark ceiling. Darkness surrounds you. The sound of your air conditioner could be heard as the air got colder by the minute. Not feeling cold, but cozy as you felt the warmth of the covers from the bed below you. Now you’re finally able to relax peacefully. Eyes growing heavy as they start closing on their own. That’s when you knew. Sleep is what you were finally about to do.
The sound of your damn phone is all that could be heard in the morning.
The sound that seemed to always ruin your happiness and peaceful moments when you were simply trying to relax.
“Why me?” You say in a whiny sleepy tone as you grab your phone and press answer, not even looking at the caller id. “Yes?” You’re voice slightly raspy as you press your phone against your ear. “Where are you?” It’s Nicole. “Home. Why?” You rub your eyes, slowly opening them. “Weren’t we gonna get lunch together?” “What time is it?” “12:36” ..Oh shit— Throwing your phone on the bed, you quickly stand up on your feet and run to the bathroom. Nicole could hear your footsteps as you run all over your apartment trying to get dressed as you knew you were late for work and your lunch. “I’m late. I’m late. I’m late. I’m gonna die. Oh god.” You repeat to yourself as you know you’re toast. Today is Sunday. You start work at twelve o'clock and you’re officially late. You hate that job with your whole life. You wish you could quit, but you simply can’t. You need the money. For your apartment, for food, for everything. It’s not the first time you arrive late for work. You had promised yourself you’d never be late again since that last time.
It was a Thursday and you were 1 hour late. Your boss had yelled at you because she had to take care of all the customers by herself. If only she knew how hard it was to do that 4 days each week. She had said if you arrived late again she’d either fire you or lower the money in your checks. And that was the moment you made your promise. “Can we have lunch tomorrow? I’m really sorry.” you said placing your phone against your ear again in a rush as you prepared your bag with your free hand. “Y/n. It’s alright! Go run before you arrive even later than planned!” She quickly says and you run out of your apartment. “Thanks, I owe you.” You hang up and quickly go down the stairs. It’s the most exercise you’ve had in weeks. All you could think about was work. Arriving and acting as if you were never late. Reaching the lowest floor you run out the building and decide to run to the shop. It’ll take you about 20 minutes by car, because of traffic, and 10 minutes running. You ran as you bumped into a few people, apologizing to each of them. Now you felt the way most people here felt. The rush. It was exhausting. Minutes pass and you see the shop just around the corner. You run faster than before and feel yourself enter the shop. Catching your breath for a few seconds you run to the other side of the counter and you quickly start taking the customers orders. That’s work. No time to rest. Just work.
As time passed, the number of people entering the shop lowered. The rush of the afternoon took a toll of you and made you forget about how hungry you were. Food. Good thing you always have a canned chicken soup hidden away under the cash machine for times like these. You took a look at the time on your wristwatch and a sigh of relief escaped from your lips, knowing you were almost done with your shift.
Your boss didn’t notice you were late since she wasn’t even there herself. That somewhat lifted a weight off your shoulders when you saw no sign of her at all today. You can almost hear your bed calling you from the shop. Your shift ends in an hour. 8:10 p.m you read on your watch. No customers would come this late at night, you thought. Feeling rebellious, you decided to leave the shop an hour early and close up before any last minute customers could enter. It was not the first time you did that and it probably won’t be the last. As you thought about the warmth of your bed and getting home, your phone buzzed in your bag. Grabbing it as you walked to your apartment building, you saw a message.
[JJ123456789]: Yeah. My name is J
… “Wait. What? Nooooo. Come on.” You stomped your foot on the ground as your phone died right in your hands, before you could even read the name. You looked up to see a few people staring at you with weird faces but you didn’t care. You had forgotten to charge your phone last night and you were slightly disappointed because of that. As you walked, you stared down at the black screen of your phone wishing to have seen the person’s name. A sigh leaves your lips as you arrive to the building a some minutes later. Feeling the need to take a shower, lay down, and just sleep after a long chaotic day at work.
