"Intimacy - or, rather, the possibility of making it happen - is the glowing star which this research is at all times always reaching towards and orbiting around. I reach back, thinking of my past, and the alluring glow of intimacy is remembered like the bright blue light that a computer emits as it’s starting up, readying a world of limitless connection."
- Denzo, on the colour blue.
“In listening and grappling with each word exchanged, there is something to be actively done on the part of the audience member as well as myself. Sitting before me were the voices of five individuals, who had all walked very different paths within the same terrain.”
- Denzel Nyathi, 2024

"I couldn't think about intimacy without thinking about the intimacy that I experience in friendship."
opening remarks (snippet)
What does it mean to find moments of intimate connection within The Machine? What could it mean for one gear to stop, reverse the direction of its spinning or perhaps even act in ways which work against the very functions of The Machine? bubblewrapped cautiously positions itself in line with these and many other questions. Moving away from the exhibition as a final, pristinely polished presentation, bubblewrapped is an insight into the inner workings of the Johannesburg art scene, or ‘The Machine’. The exhibition curates moments of admission, reflection and confession of previously unspoken and otherwise suppressed desires; what stands in the place where beautiful artworks might’ve hung, is an exhibition of intimacy itself. An artistic imagining of the general feel of the responses is presented to you, for your valued engagement. From here? The path is not clear. At moments, one sentiment echoes another, and possibilities are animated by the power of togetherness. But at other moments, there is rhetorical discord. The path is not clear. Wherever next we go, it is the hope of bubblewrapped that we go Slowly, and with care.
