A girl on the cusp of life and death

Twenty years ago Meilin died. Through a sacrifice from her parents, she was granted an extra ten years to live. Caught in the cusp of life and death, Meilin learned to see the spirits that dwell within the cracks of life.

Death took her parents as contracted. Left alone with only scant years left to live, she happened upon a failing temple with a lazy Buddhist monk. He taught her to exorcise spirits and demons.

She realized she could harness the spirits to fortify her soul and protect it from death. Thus, a mechanical heart replaced hers, powered by the spirits she captures in lieu of exorcism.

Death came to claim her, but was unable to do so. The commotion she caused brought the god of the underworld himself, Yama, to her side. Something about the situation entertained him and he travels by her side, awaiting the day her lucks runs low and he is able to claim her soul.
