big moods during sotu
These are the lessons I have learned, the words left unsaid, the words that have resonated in my heart. 1. Don’t compare yourself to other people. Each and every person goes about life at their own pace. It doesn’t matter if it takes you one month, three weeks, or a few years longer than everyone else. Do not lose your individual color trying to catch up to the world. 2. Look at where you are, who you’re with, what you’ve become. That is exactly where you need to be. Do not be afraid of the future and do not dwell on the past, because at this exact moment you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Do not doubt that. 3. If you’re depressed and you know it, admit it. That is the first and most important step to recovery. Don’t cover it up with facades like a band-aid. Nor should you wrap yourself with it like a blanket. But throughout that whole process of healing, know that you are still you. When you’re humming along to your favorite Daphne Loves Derby song or when you’re crying in the corner of the bathroom, that is still you. 4. Accept that others want to help you, too. You are not meant to go about this life alone. No one is. There will always be a community of people, small or large, that is willing to stay by your side. Some moments might be obvious and come in the form of a telephone call or a hug. Other times it may be that they see bits and pieces of you in their day, and that is enough. You don’t need to do everything alone. 5. Guard your heart but do not barricade it from the world, even from yourself. I believe it’s been long enough and you owe it to yourself to open up. 6. You had a very simple dream in high school. You wanted to touch people’s lives, to help them love themselves in a way that you never could. You wanted to make sure that everyone saw a light, even when they couldn’t see it themselves. Even if it was only one person, that was your dream. Right now, at this moment, you are accomplishing your dream. Remember that. 7. You will have your time to leave on a new adventure. It may not be now or in the next month, but that time will come. And when it does, be ready to leave without looking back. One day you’ll be able to stretch your wings. 8. You will be okay.

Love appears in many ways. It doesn’t always have to be a romantic relationship to come true. Love appears in that innocent smile a baby gives you, love appears in that 2 second side hug that one person who hates hugs gives you, love appears that moment your pet sees you and their whole world dances with the sight of your face, love appears when your friend tells you to listen to a song they like, love appears when your sibling decides to tell you about their day, love appears when you’re staring at the mirror with your favorite outfit and smile at yourself because you like what you see. There are many ways other than a romantic relationship in which love appears. You just have to appreciate those little things.

May 2017 be the year you stop standing in the doorway, and actually find the courage to take steps across the threshold into the happiness you so rightfully deserve to exist in. to live in. all the time, not some of the time. all the time.
iammyss , 2017. the year to take bold steps. (via wordsnquotes)
This is what I like about photographs. They’re proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.
Jodi Picoult, Lone Wolf (via wordsnquotes)
I never realized what a big deal that was. How amazing it is to find someone who wants to hear about all the things that go on in your head.
Nina LaCour, Hold Still (via wordsnquotes)
i lost cultures i lost a whole language i lost my religion i lost it all in the fire that is colonization so i will not apologize for owning every piece of me they could not take, break and claim as theirs.

If African feminism truly wants to be honest, it must reflect the hard choices, the sorrows, the triumphs, the love, the stories, the truths of various African women. It must not be so white washed we refuse to see it without a western perspective. If we need to be honest, we need to include the narratives of women who are like and unlike us, who are educated and not educated. We know there are various ways to tell this story so let us acknowledge that there is also a class difference within our societies and in our struggles. We need to not study women from a different background as though they are some sort of lab tests, we need to be honest with how religion has shaped our stories, our lives and the way we say our stories. It is not enough we only include stories of women who look like us or study women without understanding how their different ways of fighting can help ours. If African feminism truly wants to be honest, we must do this in our stories, in our various countries and when we meet; especially when we meet in the diaspora to discuss these issues.

Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it.
Ralph Marston (via wordsnquotes)
There are far too many silent sufferers. Not because they don’t yearn to reach out, but because they’ve tried and found no one who cares.

We assume that others show their love in the same way that we do and if they don’t follow that equation, we worry that the love is not there.

Take it from me: If you hear the past speaking to you, feel it tugging at your back and running its fingers up your spine, the best thing to do—the only thing—is run.

She loved deeper than the ocean and brighter than the sun. She loved people the way she deserved to be loved, but never got. She loved like this from every broken piece of her heart.

We…need to forgive ourselves…For all the things we didn’t do. All the things we should have done. You can’t get stuck on the regrets of what should have happened.
