Friday, June 12, 2026.
This morning after feeding the cat I just went straight outside to do some yardwork. No breakfast, no coffee first. I wanted to get outside before it got too hot. I told myself I'd just do 20-30 minutes and then come in for breakfast. I ended up working for almost 2 hours. (See, I can really work at something once I'm locked in. It's just the getting started that is sometimes, or often, the problem.)
It was pleasantly cool while I was working. Also, my right ear is plugged up (there's fluid in my inner ear, like swimmer's ear) and I had a cotton ball stuffed in my left ear, so all the urban sounds were muffled and distant. It was pretty relaxing 😂
I'm moving on from the giant weed for now (something needs to be done about its root still) to focus on the patch of lawn. It was really sad last couple of seasons. Mainly because my next-door neighbours always let their dog pee on my lawn! I also sometimes let the dogs in my care pee there but not very often. And anyway, it's MY lawn, so I can pee there if I want to, but you go pee on your OWN lawn (they don't have a lawn out back, but they do out front. So I generally encourage the dogs to pee on their front lawn when no one's looking 😂).
I don't say anything about them letting their dog pee on my lawn because a) they are actually good neighbours and it's not worth creating a negative situation over my sad little lawn. It's not really a big deal tbh. And b) My lawn is not that precious. And like I said, I let others dogs pee there sometimes so 🤷♀️ I realize those are not really two clearly defined points so there was no reason to organize them into a) and b).
Anyway, what was I saying? Oh right, the sad patch of lawn. So last season I bought some grass seed and started reseeding the sad bald patches. Then I ran out and went to buy more and the local store had run out of the cheaper type and I wasn't about to buy the deluxe type. Then after thinking some more I decided I actually wanted to sow clover seeds instead. So I bought clover seeds. I wasn't sure either seeds would take because tbh I didn't really know what I was doing. But they took! And now the clover and the grass is really lush! But patchy, because I just sort of threw handfuls of seeds down. And it's like a weird patchwork quilt with clover on one side and grass around the edge 😂 Whatever.
So what I'm working on now is weeding. I haven't mown the lawn, like AT ALL yet this season. So it's crazy long. But I wanted to weed first, because once I mow I can't really see the weeds anymore. Then after I get most of the big nasty weeds out by the root, then I'll mow. Then I'll be able to see what's still bald and put more seed down in those patches. So yeah, that's the plan.
Also, while I was weeding, when it was still relatively early and cool, I noticed a bumblebee in the clover 🍀🐝 So now I don't want to mow because I don't want to take away their food! I have to mow though. Idk. I'll have to think about this 🤔

Stepped in cat shit that was in the hallway in front of the door!! 🤬🤢 Idk how I missed stepping in it on the way in, caught it on the way out. Fuck! At least I was barefoot so it was relatively easy to wash my foot. But idk why he pooped there, he has never not pooped in his litter. He's been so needy and picky about food lately, I'm worried about him and he's due for a vet check-up but I can't afford it right now. Hopefully by next month I'll have funds available. Anyway, cleaned up the mess.

🎧 The Harlequin Tea Set (and other stories) by Agatha Christie, performed by Hugh Frasier, Simon Vance and Isla Blair.
📖 The Lost Years by Mary Higgins Clark.
Finished this the other day. *No spoilers*
Well, it's hard to give spoilers, since we all know how it ends 🫣 But with these re-interpretations of a well-known story it's not about the ending but about the journey getting there.
I really enjoyed this interpretation of the story of Joan of Arc. First of all, she friggin' kicks butt! Against all sorts of odds. So you find yourself rooting for her for the entire book. Second, this is not a Joan of religious myths and legends, but a Joan of real life. Sorry Jesus-lovers but this Joan doesn't see angels or perform miracles. This Joan just happens to be strong and naturally talented. A sort of genius. One could argue that that is by the grace of God and that that is the miracle. So be it. But other than her God-given talents, this Joan kicks butt all by her own secular self. Nary a holy vision or "and thus God spake" in sight.
I'm also really mad at everyone who threw her under the bus. Which is everyone. Every single fucking person. La jetée sous l'autobus. Bastards. But our gal Joan, she's fierce. She's determined. She never stops fighting. She has no time for those fools. She's singularly focused ahead on her one goal (and it's not what you think).

Produce delivery service.
I was just comparing the produce box I just received to a box I made a record of a year ago. Seems to me they've gotten a bit skimpier. Comparing the list of items there is still the same number of items (15) but look at the difference in quantity! Last year there were more than a half dozen tangerines/oranges vs this year just 3 oranges. A whole pineapple and a whole melon last year, counting as 1 item each. I remember there always being 3 avocado and 3 corn cobs, this week only 2 of each. It almost seems like the same amount but I've been "feeling" like it's been less for a few months now and looking at the evidence I don't think it's just my imagination. I remember food from my childhood being "better quality/larger quantity" than what it seems now but that's a difference of decades. Now we're noticing the difference in just a matter of months. The way things are going in the world right now it's only going to get worse, isn't it?

Today I absolutely have to focus on yardwork. There's this "tree" (sapling? Enormous weed?) that's been growing for the past few years and it's now blocking my a/c unit. Every year I tackle it but I don't have the right tool. I need a saw blade that's small and narrow enough to get in between everything. Or idk what. One year I made a cut and stuck a penny in it and it worked! It stopped growing! It was on the one side of the stairs. But then the next year it started growing on the other side of the stairs instead. It basically said, "fuck you" to me. The side it's growing on now is where the a/c unit is and it's a tight corner as it is without the fucking tree there too and impossible to get in there with a saw! So that's why it just keeps taking over every year, and every year it grows bigger. Last year I didn't get around to dealing with it as much as I should have so now it's twice the problem it was last year. Ugh.
And I think my bi-weekly produce box just arrived, yay! Fresh fruit and veggies for me today!

Notes: Woke up feeling dehydrated and headachy. Not really sure why. Also feeling low-level tension headache because my hamstrings are tight. (Yes, tight hamstrings give me a headache, it's all connected.) Ears have been less itchy! I hope my friend can let me borrow the red light therapy earbuds for a bit longer. Idk if they are why my ears are better but my ears aren't worse since starting the therapy so...
I've been having daydreams of using a paper bullet journal. I don't know why. I've tried and failed at using one on multiple occasions. This digital bujo has been working for me for longer than I ever stuck with pen & paper so idk why I want to mess with that. Probably I'm bored. Probably the daydreams mean I need to engage in a creative outlet. As for a paper notebook, I will just have to live vicariously through other people posting photos of their notebooks. I just love how notebooks with handwriting and doodles and things look! 📓📒

my sleep schedule is fucked. my to-do list is hurting. my brain needs more stimulation than scrolling on tumblr every time i’m bored. i wanna learn about micro- and macroeconomic systems and geopolitical history and intergovernmental organizations and the ICC and ICJ and literary themes in increasingly more nuanced texts and the nineteenth-century canadian schooling system and the complex ways people navigate interpersonal relationships. i want to work on my daily habits and workout routine and diet and mental health and work ethic and in general how good enough i am for myself. i want to start a crochet business and consistently work on learning guitar and read more and hang out with friends more and watch more classic movies. i want to do all this but something keeps getting in my way. sometimes i wish i was born in an era in which phones didn’t exist, but i know in my heart that that wouldn’t have solved the problem anyway.

Paid annual life insurance premium (via bank direct bill payment). That's done and out of mind for another year. ✅

⌚⏳ I know I'm procrastinating because... I've just about started to do something about 5 times in the past 10 minutes and then distracted myself by remembering the other thing I have to do and then wondering which I should do first. Mentally evaluating which one a) is more of a priority b) makes more sense to do first c) requires less time and/or energy d) I "feel like" doing e) etc. Meanwhile, remembering the third thing that needs doing and then the fourth, and ending up scrolling on my phone to avoid the unpleasant feelings, then catching myself, then starting the cycle over again. So I haven't done anything at all and now I'm getting hungry again so that's a whole chore in and of itself. Usually just making up my daily post is enough to get me going but I'm struggling today. Not sure how to tackle things today. Do I start by doing a little bit of everything that's on my mind in parallel? I'm usually methodical, one thing at a time, but maybe that's not the right strategy today. I'm a little bit all over the place.
****
Ok, I'm a dum-dum 🤦♀️ I just realized why I'm struggling today. It's because I just found out this morning that this cat I have regularly looked after for several years was found dead! (They think maybe he ingested rat poison. He was not that old and very healthy so there's no medical reason he should have suddenly dropped dead. Owner is devastated of course.) So of course I'm struggling today! I'm literally grieving! Let's remember to be kind to ourselves.
He was a big ginger cat, and very handsome. I hope he didn't suffer too much 😭 He will be on my mind today. I am likely to still look after his brother at some point; I will miss his presence in their house when I do, I'm sure.
