Icarus and the Phoenix: An open letter to my family
You taught me the importance of standing up for myself
You tought me the importance of individuality
Unless it was something you didn't like.
You taught me the value of family
As long as I fell in line.
You taught me to be self sufficient
Unless you had a void to fill.
You taught me to fight back
Unless they were your hands.
You taught me about legacy
When you meant generational homogeny.
You wanted me to be happy. Or so you said,
But what you did was shroud me in your misery.
I was too good for him, her, them,
Yet I was never good enough for you.
You always had to have the last word,
But your last words to me will be the last words you speak to me
You set me free, the only healthy thing you've taught me.
I know you intended to hurt me,
But I learned the truth for myself.
That you are Icarus and I didn't want to share your fall,
Because you may be Icarus
But I am the Phoenix of legends
