Beautiful Gee’s Bend Quilt
“asymmetrical arrangements of cloth are a form of improvisation found in west and central african textiles. kongo people praised talented expressions of sound and vision with the phrase ‘veti dikita’ meaning ‘the mind plays the pattern strongly.’ improvisation (break patterning or flexible patterning) in kuba rafia cloth and painted pygmy textiles has been liked to spirit possession.
kongo scholar, fukiqu bunseki says, ‘everytime there is a break in pattern–it is the rebirth of ancestral power in you.’“
