I did a quick mock-up of the first spreads in class. Its in the size i want and the illustration style i want. It gave me a better view of my project and literally grasp it. Having the blank space in the middle makes it a part of the page even more rather than just leaving an empty page black with text. In this layout the reader will be able to read the story slowly and digest every bit of the book, from edge to edge.
I got some post-its and tried sketching on them. It's not as good as John Kenn's work but i guess it has the same feel. So now i am set on my illustration style. Now i have to start doing the spreads and somehow finalize pages.
Why Small Books?
I myself is not a reader. I hate reading, but for some reason small books get my attention. They are very portable and they look sleek. Having a small book with small text and an ample amount of imagery is a book that i would definitely read. Kids who went through what i went through would need something that would remind them wherever they go. Small books are easier to carry around in your pocket.
While looking up for monsters in Goggle, I came across this artist named John Kenn. He does his artwork on Post-Its. It was very fascinating and quickly decided to have a similar illustration style. I will not imitate but try to have the same feel of his works.
Speaking of post-it notes, i also decided to have my book in a size of a rectangular post-it. It gives the reader time to digest and just bask in the presence of the book. I remembered Leland's lecture regarding time in books. Having the book longer would make the phasing slow thus giving the reader time to include his/her thoughts in it.
I asked Dania who works for the writing center about my poem and structure. She commented on how i form the sentences and reminded me that the one who's reading the book will be kids, Its minor but i still had to fix it.
Tried to give my prior sketches with contrast. I didn't find it to be working that much. I guess there is just too much contrast and placed more emphasis on the demon. More emphasis should have been given to the person. At this point, i have decided to look up some illustration styles that i could use in my book.
based on the draft of my poem, i started sketching each spread. At this point i haven't really looked up any illustration style because i wanted everything to be straight out of me. It has this comic book style in it. I find it very straight to the point, but i wanted it to be deeper than that. I want to give my reader a space to put their thoughts in it too.
Getting Muneera's opinion have helped me in grasping this project even more. It made me think about various factors that would make my book a bit abstract, raw and real.
We also talked about the 2nd book to this series. A book about overcoming the demons since the first one is about the demon. It will make this series of books a tool to anyone who's experiencing what i have experienced before.
Inner Demons: Back-story
When i was in 4th grade, that's when i knew my inner demon. I started to have trouble understanding myself. Doubts towards my family, my friends, my life and myself are starting to arise. I had a hard time coping up with my inner demon. I hated every single day of my life at that point. My grades went lower than before, started failing class. I am young, i know, but there are certain things that i didn't want to be around me anymore. I was like a wrecking ball that destroys everything in my path, yet i can't really move away, just swinging wildly with chains attached to me. The anger towards my parents grew and together with the moving from Philippines to Doha made my demon grow bigger. Being in Doha, having no friends at all made everything worse. Ive dealt with my demon for the rest of my High School life. I became someone i would fear.
The turning point was seeing the genuine love my parents had for me. Seeing the hardship they go trough just to make you satisfied was very heartbreaking for me. It made me appreciate them even more. I started to appreciate things even more, value the people closest to even more. Knowing that i am not alone and someone appreciates me gave me the motivation to get rid of my demon. My demon called depression. I looked at life right in the eyes and promised to always look on the brighter side of things. Eventually i overcame my demon, i saw the good in me and won that battle.
After hearing the lecture regarding kid psychology and story structure, i decided to change my approach from writing a story, to writing a poem describing these inner demons we have in us. I figured that making the reader understand and know these inner demons will be a good starting point towards overcoming them.
I had to pick certain words over the other with the thought of a kid is reading my book. It should be easier for them to understand. Since my target audience are ages 8-10. It was very challenging, but the preliminary draft of my poem is in a good standing, so few more revisions and i will be happy.
Monsters in our life are the unknown. Fearing those monsters are fear of the unknown. So, gear up, explore and kill fear. Start knowing your monsters, start knowing yourself.
My Thought while listening to the children psychology lecture.
Having someone talk about psychology was very helpful in regards to writing the story for our audience. On what is the right approach and how to handle the vocabulary that needs to be used.
I was having problems on structuring my story at that time, nothing made sense in my head. But after the lecture, i ended up changing my approach and was able to move forward with this project.
These are photos of stuff that seemed interested to me from Leland's collection of children's books. Various illustration styles and techniques was displayed but these stands out for me. Seeing a wide variety of styles helped me re-think my approach in regards to my book.
I was leaning more towards something dark and lots of contrast for my book, and i guess it shows from these images. there is something about contrast that draws me to it.
Pardon the profanity. This was done during the Watercolor Worshop by Zoe. Just trying out the techniques she taught us. I was also contemplating wether to have a colored book or monotone. But, all in all the watercolor workshop was fun! it was my first time to do some proper water coloring. Even though there’s limited colors available, i still managed to get the desired image i had in my head.

Mini Saga
This book is about dealing with your inner demon. How does it affect you as a person and how does it affect you in general. Our inner demon can sometimes be in our favor and sometimes against it, this book shows that good or bad, it still boils down to how you handle situations, how you handle yourself. There's no such thing as inner demon, it's just you and your struggle with-in.
This was my preliminary sketch. While sketching i was thinking of a perfect subject for my book. The sketch was the very first thing in my process because it gets my mind thinking more and more. After having the sketch, i had a clearer idea of my book and it slowly formed the mini-saga.
These photos are basically doodles of monsters i can think of quick. Nothing really special, but it gave me a start to my process.
