i appreciate that when the hunger games has the reveal of the sexual exploitation of victors its Finnick who talks. could have had any female tribute talk about it but its the boy with the reputation of being a flirt and a charmer who always has a new lover who talks about it first. both a good depiction of male victims of sexual violence and avoidance of shoving any particular female character into common victim tropes if it had been any female victor who talked. and its just a crazy powerful moment for his character, talking about theeee worst parts of his life so the rescue mission has a chance

the hunger games is so funny its like here is my kids' book. it has a ton of dense political themes but like i explain them in a kid friendly way. don't even worry about the incredibly realistic violence. my main character called her boyfriend's mom a witch instead of a bitch so it's a kids' book. yeah there's sex trafficking

this is not against the books btw. i've been rereading them and i'm genuinely impressed collins managed to take all these super heavy themes and package them in a way that's digestible to younger audiences without diminishing it. it's important for kids to sometimes encounter Dark Shit in fiction so they can recognize it in real life.

One thing that’s always bothered me since I joined THG fandom(especially before tumblr) is that we are pretty much a parallel to the Capitol. I mean if I’m able to enjoy the Hunger Games books and movies and interact with the fandom on social media, then in Panem, that would make me the Capitol. And obviously, no, of course we’re not the same since we recognize the dictatorship, the dehumanization of literal children, and the horrors that go unseen by the actual Capitol citizens. And we appreciate the characters, the worldbuilding, and the literary impact of the novels.

And yet it still bugs me because a few days ago I saw this reel on Instagram that was like ‘oh what district are you from Panem’ and people in the comments were like ‘labeling ourselves as a district is Capitol-like ngl’ and I lwk agreed. And that randomly pops into my head whenever I’m doing anything related to THG that has nothing to do with the og message of the series. Writing meaningless fanfiction, crackshipping, watching edits, etc. Like I’m really no better than the Capitol and it just makes me so uncomfortable and I wish I could stop doing that T-T am I alone in this

Okay but doesn't it drive you insane how significant this is for Katniss. Not to love someone, we know she loves the people around her fiercely. We know she loves her mom, however complicated that relationship is. We know she loves Haymitch, and Finnick, and Cinna, and Johanna, and Effie, and even Prim's cat. But to admit it to herself? To say it out loud? Katniss Zero-Self-Awareness Everdeen? Katniss Everyone-Is-Surely-As-Obsessed-With-Peeta's-Eyelashes-And-Kindness-As-I-Am Everdeen? Katniss Ever-Since-My-Dad-Died-I'd-Rather-Die-Than-Admit-I-Love-Someone-Other-Than-Prim-Because-Losing-Them-Could-Destroy-Me Everdeen?

I really like the theory the cookies Katniss got from Otho was something of a tradition where he would bring a batch of them for the tributes every year, maybe hoping he wouldn't ever give them to his kids ever (and maybe sharing the batch between his kids after the reaping and the tributes).

It fits well with Haymitch's dad visiting a tribute who had no one as this idea that there is maybe more solidarity with the tributes from 12 and the population that you would think at first glance in district 12.

there is something so special about the parallels between the berry scene and the 'let me go/i can't' scene.

because katniss didn't have to hurt peeta in the berry scene to win the games. and peeta didn't have to do anything to save himself after the snow/coin assassination.

they could have just done nothing. they just had to let the other die.

but instead, they chose to put their own safety at risk. katniss putting the berries in her mouth. peeta grabbing her shoulder with the nightlock pill, knowing it would be bit.

for both, they could have just stood there. done nothing. survived to tell the tale.

but what good is surviving if you just find yourself trapped in a never-ending hell without the only person who can help you out of it?

i just love how complex all of suzanne's characters are. but especially peeta.

because what do you mean that the boy who holds so much insecurity about his worth is the popular kid? the kid who can make anyone laugh? who is so quick-witted and charming that everyone seems to like him? he is the person who thinks that people think so poorly of him? that no one would care if he were gone?

it would have taken no thought on suzanne's part to draft peeta as a kind boy who isn't particularly smart. a wallflower like his father. too scared to talk to his crush until its too late. turning a smart, strong character into a weak boy waiting for his dream girl to save the day. a boy his mother likely characterized him as.

but no. instead, peeta is written as the kind, charismatic, popular kid. who also thinks he is worthless, dumb, and a burden to those around him.

showing a duality that is both a testament to peeta's upbringing and his humanity.

Always remember that Maysilee Donner, who loved being beautiful and beautiful things such as dresses, velvet bows, birds and jewelry, was also a person who always hoped to look like her grandmother one day because her grandmother was so beautiful to her and was sad that she'd never see herself grow old. Obviously the book interpretation is entirely up to the reader, but I like to think that Lucy Gray's grave is empty. Not because she isn't dead. Not because she lives either. But because the whole point of her character after Snow finally cracks is to haunt the narrative, and the most interesting, compelling way she can do that is both for him and for us to never truly know what happens to her afterwards. She's Schrödinger's cat. She's a ghost that lives every time someone replaces the Capitol silence with music. We don't even know if the Covey ever found her. The only thing I choose to believe, whether they did or not, is that that grave is empty.

Lucy Gray doesn't belong in the ground. She is the air, the trees, a whisper behind your ear. She is insanity for the cruel and strength for the defiant. She is hope; not a grain of it, not in small doses, not the tool Coriolanus means it to be. He tried to squash it, but Lucy Gray became intangible. Like a song, she escaped his control, and she became infinite.

obviously we dont see lucy grays reaping morning like we do katniss' but sometimes i think about how similar they mightve been. cc is twelve just like prim and its his first reaping, is the whole household focused on comforting him? there doesn't seem to be higher slip numbers by age yet, or tesserae, so he has just as high a chance of getting picked as anyone. lucy gray is 16 like katniss and theyve both been in it for years and have years to go, she goes out into the woods early in the day (and picks up a snake) then comes back home and puts on one of her mothers dresses. it might be billy taupes last year just like its gales. i bet he suggested running away that morning
