My Values as a Nature Interpreter
As a nature interpreter, the way I approach everything in life in some way reflects my core values. One thing I truly value is honesty. Honesty is how friendships are formed and is the basis of what keeps relationships together. As long as you are not hurting another human being, I think it is important to always be as honest as possible. In my personal experience, a friend will appreciate the honest truth over a happy lie. I think honesty forms the basis of trust, which ultimately unifies communities. I also believe in equality and fairness. I want nature to be something everyone can enjoy, no matter who they are. With all the inequality that occurs on a global scale, I think it is important as an individual to try and promote equality. During times like these I always think of the famous quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. This quote has always resonated with me and inspired me to be the best human I can be, because at the end of the day, that’s all I can do. You can not control how others see you, but you can control how you treat this planet and all other walks of life you share it with. The more you treat others with respect and equality, the more likely they are to spread that same positivity and respect. Another one of my core values is selflessness. In a society that rewards selfish behaviours, I think it is imperative to try and be a selfless as possible. We will not see greater things until more human’s act beyond their own needs. To progress as a society, I think we need to promote caring about the wellbeing of strangers. You should not feel like you need compensation in return for doing a good deed. I want to motivate people to see that they should do good deeds for the sake of doing good deeds. This type of altruistic behaviour is what will separate us from previous generations of humanity. I think one way to promote these altruistic behaviours is by teaching the importance of empathy from a young age. Empathy is a unique human emotion that allows ones to consider how another human is feeling, given their unique life circumstances.
It is my duty as a nature interpreter, to share my passions with a wide audience. I do this by holding myself to standards which promote the things I value in life. I treat everyone with the same level of respect as I show a friend. Even if someone disrespects me, I try to understand what is making them act that way. A lot of the time the cause of their actions has nothing to do with me, completely beyond my control. If I were to react negatively, it only adds to this negative energy and only creates more trouble. When you respond with compassion and respect, one may realize the way they are acting is inappropriate and more often that not will immediately change the way they act.
One thing I try to share is the feeling you get when doing a selfless act. It truly feels good to help people. So many people are reluctant to help others because they see no value in it. They ask “What do I get in return?”. This is where I want to help teach people that the feeling you get when helping others is incomparable to any amount of material goods. There is something special about helping those in need that makes it worth it in every aspect. If more people stepped out of there comfort zone and tried something new that helped others they would understand what I mean. Every single day presents an opportunity to help others. It does not have to be a life changing act to have a big effect. If every single person on this planet were to do something little each day that benefitted another, I think we would start to solve a lot of humanities problems. Problems rooted in ego and selfishness. Problems that could be solved if we all worked together out of compassion for humanity.

As an individual, I personally resonate with art and the raw human experience. Through art, human experience can be shared that otherwise would be lost in the medium of verbal communication. Art ascends verbal communication. Music is something special to me. Through music, you can unify people of every culture and nationality. Music has no borders. I truly believe it is the universal language of humanity. Something that bring everyone together and enjoy.
I also value authentic human interactions. This semester has proven difficult create genuine connections with fellow peers and like-minded individuals. These interactions are where I feel I truly shine. I love learning about other people and their unique characteristics. There are over seven billion people on this planet and each and every single one of us is unique in our own ways. This fascinates me because every new interaction presents an opportunity to learn. You may learn something new about that person, the world, or even yourself. The potential to learn is endless, its up to you to seek out that new knowledge. This passion for new knowledge and experience motivates me to step out of my comfort shell. Once you have the courage to leave your comfort shell, that is where your truly learn and grow as a human being. I think that is one of the most important things we should do as individuals, continually push to learn, create, and become a better person than we were yesterday.
