“From the meeting on the Hill.” Sam nodded his head toward the chocolate croissant as he handed it over. “The pastries, not the information- don’t say I’ve never done anything for you.”

He shot a similar look at Josh’s door. “Amy Gardner’s will be here in an hour. Don’t tell Josh. The meeting on the Hill might have involved a discussion on Planned Parenthood funding that doesn’t seem to be going our way. Amy will blame Josh because, well, I don’t plan on being here. And they have that thing where they yell at each other. So I’m saying, don’t tell Josh, or he’ll leave and she’ll just wait until I’m back. Take lunch. Enjoy your pastry so much you miss her walking past you. Suddenly lose your voice.”

             Her excitement over the free pastry is quickly squashed by the mention of Amy Gardner. For about the millionth time, she takes a quick millisecond to beat back the instinctive squirm of jealousy that twists in her stomach whenever her name is mentioned along with Josh’s. Luckily, she’s gotten really good at hiding it and her expression barely falters. Without missing a beat, she nods and takes a bite of the croissant. See? Casual!

             “Right. But there’s a snag in your brilliant plan,” she says, still chewing on pastry. “If she tracks him down, that means I have to deal with Josh AFTERWARDS. And y’know I’d almost prefer the yelling?” She smiles sweetly. “So, I’m gonna need an extra sweetener, there Sam.”

“Yikes.” The corners of Sam’s mouths pulled outwards, baring his teeth in commiseration. He checked his watch, dodging the sleep question. “I’ve got 15 until my next meeting that I’d be happy to spend doing anything that doesn’t require me to be near Toby. Need some help?”

             “So, the Asia-Pacific speech is going well then?” she jokes, sympathetic note in her voice. Donna looks back at her desk, neat stacks of files labeled to-do laid out across the surface. Those are a no-go. She loves Sam -- but she’s NOT letting him disrupt her system. Instead she goes for the boring make-work task she always offers Josh. “Wanna sort mail?” she says weakly.

         She narrows her eyes at him -- trying to suss out just what INFORMATION he has. Whatever it is, the fact that he’s come all the way over to her desk ( on the pretense of pastries no less ) means it’s something good.

         Donna shoots a quick glance towards Josh’s office. His door is still closed and even the most casual listener can hear him yelling at at some congressman over the phone. Good, she thinks. He’ll be DISTRACTED for awhile. Leaning in, Donna holds out a hand to accept her share of the baked goods. She’s an easy bribe, really.
