[I have to delete this blog and shut sjm out of my brain forever at SOME point but -]
Can I just say that all the hellish rhetoric in the US this week around SCOTUS deliberations on abortion rights made me angry about acosf yet again? Bc so many women on my feeds are sharing stories of the trauma of even wanted and planned pregnancies, much less the unplanned ones and how fucked our view of women and women's health is - and sjm took this very serious, real-life issue and threw it into her incoherent "plot" just to force MORE trauma on these stupid characters. After just becoming a mother herself. And after the pregnant character seemed to make it clear she wasn't ready to be a mother yet. And in a world where magic is so ill-defined it's a wonder there were literally any conflicts at all, couldn't Special High Lord Rhysand just snap the problem away? OH WELL.
Sorry.
Just so angry at everything, might as well throw a faceless author in there too (but frankly I hesitate to even call her an author at this point).

Head empty. Just a chaotic one night re-read of In Vino Veritas by @featherymalignancy.
As a lawyer and a wine snob (fancy alcoholic) this one has always just *spoken* to me.
I love this so much thank you!
Literally in the middle of chapter 9 of my own re-read this week. It's TOO GOOD.
“morning star” Virginia, Darrow and Pax.
(”Red Rising” by @pierce-brown)
(And now I’m thinking about genetic stuff, like dominant and recessive genes, how they criss-cross etc. The hair/eyes part is easy, but how would the Sigils change? Overthinking will kill me someday for sure T_T)
““Are you drunk?” I ask with a laugh. “A little. Catch up.” She swivels her legs down and puts her feet on the ground to clear a space on the bench beside her. “I was just getting to the part where you wrestled Pax in the mud.” My mother watches me quietly, a little smile on her lips as she knows the panic that must be going through me right now. Too shocked at seeing two halves of my life collide without my supervision, I sit down uneasily and listen to Mustang finish the story. With all that’s transpired, I’d forgotten the charm of this woman. Her easy, light nature. How she draws others in by making them feel important, by saying their names and letting them feel seen. She holds my uncle and brother in a spell, one reinforced by the Telemanus’s admiration for her. I try not to blush when my mother catches me admiring Mustang. “But enough of the Institute,” Mustang says after she’s explained in detail how Pax and I dueled in front of her castle. “Deanna, you promised me a story about Darrow as a boy.” “How about the gas pocket one,” Narol says. “If only Loran was here…” “No not that one,” Kieran says. “What about…” “I have one,” mother says, cutting off the men. She begins slow, words sluggish through the lisp. “When Darrow was small, maybe three or four, his father gave him an old watch his father had given him. This brass thing, with a wheel instead of digital numbers. Do you remember it?” I nod. “It was beautiful. Your favorite possession. And years later, after his father had died, Kieran here got sick with a cough. Meds were always in short ration in the mines. So you’d have to get them from Gamma or Gray, but each has a price. I didn’t know how I was going to pay, and then Darrow comes home one day with the medicine, won’t say how he got it. But several weeks later I saw one of the Grays checking the time with that old watch.” I look at my hands, but I feel Mustang’s eyes on me.”

— Morning Star, Chapter 36
Why is Morning Star my favorite of the original trilogy, you ask? Little moments like this. Darrow starting to be honest with himself. Virginia and Darrow admiring each other. Deanna clearly loving her son and future daughter-in-law. Not to mention Deanna so blatantly acting as Darrow’s wingman here. It took a lot of restraint not to quote this whole chapter tbh.
I can finally post these. Commissioned for Flickerwix for their Red Rising candles. Go check them out.

Y’all...I will NEVER get over this fan art
Hello :B
I'm literally just imagining the naughtiest things!!!
Something that always annoys me is when people try to invalidate opinions on Nesta’s treatment because “we just don’t understand what it’s like to have a family member suffer from addiction”
Because I have several family members who have addictions yet I still disagree with the way they treated Nesta.
Do I get frustrated? Does is make me sad for them? Do I wish they would get help? All yes, but none of that gives me a reason to patronize a grown adult and treat them like a misbehaving child. None of that gives me a reason to invalidate their truama.
Have I had conversations where I tried convincing that person to get help? Have I volunteered to actively participate in their process? Did they not accept because they don’t want to change? All yes. But I didn’t throw a tantrum about it.
If dealing with people with these issues takes a unhealthy toll on you, you are completely in the right for distancing yourself so you can be in a better place but if that person won’t adjust so your comfortable, you can’t force them too.
And in real life, this controlling domineering way of trying to help, without caring about the feelings or wishes of the actual person, only ever pushes people further away.
To me, It always boils down to me the lack of accurate representation.
I too have so many alcoholics in my family, close relatives, not that anyone needs to know that. But so many. They’ve been alcoholics for years. But I also have a lot of family members with mental health issues. It’s why I went into the mental health field, so it pains me more than anything not just that the book is HORRIBLE for this representation when it’s like 2021 and this is popular fiction and supposedly more progressive by an S/JM standpoint (it’s not), but that some fans think it was the “correct” way and have said this, when it clearly has been shown to not be the correct way. What part of anyone’s monkey brain saw Hewn City, dungeon, house with no way out, and human land where you’ll be possibly hunted and most definitely hated, embarrassment, sit down, and we’re knocking down your apartment as “wow, peak love right there?” WHAT?
It’s sort of like if this is fantasy, you have to acknowledge that in a fantasy world, authors can write this and it might be interesting even though we may not like it and sometimes it doesn’t make sense and we can critique that, but if you’re taking it out of context and putting it as a “I think this was justified because addiction is hard etc” and applying your own morals, then… some people’s posts are really a smack in the face way of saying, there clearly needs to be more accurate mental health representation if you think this is “correct.” I can certainly say it might be a bias issue, or an empathy issue (since I firmly say that is a cultivated skill), but I’m like wow, I hope this book did not affirm your unempathetic beliefs about mental health and how that works in a “therapeutic”/”seeking help/helping”/”intervention” context because it certainly should not have.
I (also) have alcoholism in a lot of a my family and I think it bears pointing out that all of the people claiming that the "intervention" scene was excusable/okay/good/whatever don't seem to acknowledge that Nesta was not an alcoholic.
She was not an addict. We do not have the textual evidence that she experienced any kind of withdrawal (and fun fact, of all the addictions in the world, alcohol withdrawal is the only one that can actually kill you [heart stops]), that she was desperate for or even thought about turning to alcohol after the "intervention", (maybe one scene where she thinks to herself "wish I had a drink" and like yeah, I, too, wish I had been blackout for this entire drivel of a book), and then at Solstice I think, thinks to herself, "she didn't even want a drink."
Ok great but that's not alcoholism? It's also implied but never explained (all of S/JM in a nutshell) that she mostly went to taverns for the music? Which also helped her cope?
The I/C smelled alcohol on her and saw her get drunk around them (the barge scene we never see, and again, surrounded by triggers, I could see her turning to drink since her other coping strategies [music, sex] weren't available) didn't try to communicate with her, and then got sick of her (?? They weren't around her though so I don't really get how a bar tab was the 'last straw' for 2 insanely wealthy people - whose lives Nesta also saved???) And "fixed" the situation by imprisoning her with the friend they wanted to get laid.
It's astonishingly awful and I will never understand how people can defend it nor the author. I simply will not.
And in conclusion I think it's yet another example of S/JM piling on the angst and trauma and realizing later she couldn't possibly resolve all of it nor write it well so it just- disappears.
