Before you start filming, take a moment to locate the smoke machine and watch how the smoke moves around the venue. Air conditioning, fans, and ventilation can quickly change the direction of the smoke, so understanding its flow will help you plan your shots.

Avoid standing directly above, below, or directly in front of the smoke machine. When a fresh burst of smoke hits your lens, it can completely block your view and make your footage unusable.
