Dirk Bikkembergs autumn—winter 1999—00.

Rough materials predominate. Solid shapes are built up in leather, felt and thick, almost architectural, knitwear. Much atention is also paid to innovative materials and methods of finishing. The colours are simple and strong: black, white and classic tones (such as khaki, midnight blue and greys) illuminated by bright, even fluorescent, colours. His designs cry out for movement, action, sporting activity. They show off the body as a source of energy. On the one hand they seem to be trying to keep their wearer’s strength under control, while on the other they often show subtle signs of the irresistible strength that seems to be exercised on them. And then again, sometimes the anatomy of the body is ‘quoted’ directly. Many details in his collections also suggest ‘heavy-duty’ functionality, an ability to stand up to use even in the most extreme circumstances. This impression is created by devices which are sometimes highly refined.
