On Writer’s Block

I’ve been listening to another book on writing - Save The Cat! Writes A Novel - and while I greatly enjoyed almost all of it, and found it very helpful, at the very end there was a phrase that made me want to punch the wall. 

“There’s no such thing as writer’s block or plotter’s block. There’s only perfectionist’s block.”

The author, Jessica Brody, gave credit for this nonsense to another author, Emily Hainsworth, and I freely admit that I wished both of them great ill at this point in the book. 

I’ve made posts on this subject before… I think?… but never mind, I’m going to do it again. 

People who say ‘there’s no such thing as writer’s block’ or ‘just push through it’ are like people who say ‘there’s no such thing as PMS’ or ‘depressed people could cheer up if they wanted to’. Only someone who’s never experienced it would say something that stupid. And those of us who have tend to react something along the lines of ‘I HATE YOU, YOU SMUG BASTARD, I HOPE YOU DIE DIE DIE’. (One of my PMS symptoms is intensely homicidal thoughts! Fun!) 

But I think part of the problem is that ‘Writer’s Block’ is actually a blanket term, like ‘mental illness’ or ‘chronic pain’. There are multiple types, multiple causes, and multiple ways of handling them. No one approach will work for all of them, and what works great for one will actively worsen another

Here are the four kinds I know about. There may be more, but these are the ones I’ve experienced personally.

The Character Describes Themselves: Pre-Nano Writing Advice

I was reading a thing about writing, you know, like you do when NaNoWriMo is coming and you’re gonna do it again like an idiot. And I hit one of those ‘don’t have your character describe themselves in the introduction that is a Mistake’ things and I got to thinking about how it’s sort of right and also not.

Like, the thing where someone does a step by step description of everything about themselves? Terrible mistake. Reads like a shopping list. Nobody does that in any situation that doesn’t involve composing their own missing persons report. (If they’re actually doing that, it’s permissible, but keep it brief.)

However, people do often define themselves by certain key aspects of their own description, and those key aspects are good to establish early on. The first example of this which springs to mind from a published novel is Ilya’s rueful description of his brothers (and himself) in Mercedes Lackey’s ‘Firebird’ - “Strong like bull, dumb like ox. Hitch to plough when horse dies.” It’s short, it’s punchy, it makes the point. 

If asked to sum themselves up in a sentence or two, what would your protagonist say? Knowing that can give you a lot of insight into their personality, but also how they feel about themselves. What they think is important about them.

 Here are some samples to show you what I mean:

“I am very tall and otherwise unremarkable, insofar as I am aware.”

“A thing you need to know about me is that I am five foot two and made entirely of Mistakes and Chocolate. The Chocolate is often also a Mistake.”

“My defining characteristics are brown eyes and a total lack of impulse control.”

“I have fair hair and very poor eyesight, so any attempt at further self-description would be of no use to anyone.”

“The only two good decisions I made this year were dyeing my hair green and wearing more comfortable shoes. Everything else was shit.”

“I am a young woman without money or family, of modest education and appearance, and of no importance to anyone in this world but myself. Nevertheless, I generally find the means of being happy.”

See? Don’t those brief flashes tell you not only a lot about what kind of person the character is, but what kind of story to expect? Get you just a little bit into the character’s head? 

A detailed description of personality and/or appearance? No. But a line or two of self-definition can pull you right into the character’s viewpoint, both as a writer and a reader. I recommend it.

Do u have any advice for aspiring writers? I just adore the work u put out and hope that stuff I write will come out just as wonderful as your stories

My advice is to write a lot. Just churn out the words. I hit about 1,000,000 words of fanfiction, posted and unposted, in... hold on, I know this... about 2005? And plenty of it was really bad, especially at the beginning! But I’ve been writing for about 24 years now, both fanfiction and original. They say you can get good at anything if you practice enough. Just keep putting out the words, and you’ll get better at it. 

Also, study storytelling by reading and watching and listening to stories. Learn to tell good twists from bad, what ‘voice’ is, all of that stuff. (Voice took me years, and I still struggle with it.) When you get to where you can predict plot ‘twists’ chapters or episodes ahead, try moving to a different genre or different language. I watch a lot of Kdrama because I like the narrative conventions and how different they are from a lot of English storytelling. Checking into a different culture’s narrative conventions can really teach you a lot about storytelling, and show you how many conventions you’ve never thought about.

Thirdly, back up and save EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. Even the stuff you think stinks. Hoard it all like a dragon. You’ll be glad if you do, and regret it if you don’t. You never know when you might want it again.

So one of the things I find really cool about Magia exedra is exploring how magical girls work in alternate universes. the holy quintet swimsuit alts got recontextualized into being magical island guardians, the Kyosaya Christmas alts are from a universe where magical girls get their powers from Santa, and the Kyomami Pastry chef alts are from a universe where magical girls are called “Sorceresses” and the two run a magic pastry shop.

So I wanted to speculate how some old magireco event units might get recontextualized into AU versions:

Haregi Alts,and Miko iroha and Ui: Magical girls are instead shrine maidens who protect people from demons. They get their powers from the gods

Tanabata Yachiyo: Magical girls are instead demigods who walk amongst mortals and disguise themselves as ordinary people to protect mortals from curses. Yachiyo in particular is a goddess of the stars.

Eternal Sakura Swimsuit Alt: The world is a digital program and magical girls are instead called “Admins” who protect people from Viruses. Eternal Sakura is an admin of an underwater resort.

Vampire Kanagi, vampire juri, vampire Yuna, and Sister Momoko: Magical girls are instead nuns who get their powers from god. Instead of witching out because their soul gems get corrupted by curses, they become vampires when their soul gems get corrupted by sin.

Momoko and Mitama Mermaid alts: Magical girls are instead called “Sea Maidens” and they are able to shift between a human form and a mermaid form. they become Sea Monsters instead of witches. (An event like this would be perfect for Sayaka lol).

Holy Mami and Holy Alina (I know that these are mainline story forms but they got recontextualized for events in magireco): Magical girls are instead angels who spread goodwill amongst humans. instead of witches, they become fallen angels.

Touka and Nemu and Nayuta and Mikage Christmas alts: in a world where it’s Christmas year-round, Magical girls get their powers from wishing upon a star when they have potential. Their job is to spread Christmas cheer and to keep witches at bay, since witches are instead monsters who feed on negative emotions and cause blizzards (think the wendigos from My little pony)

Nagisa Valentine’s version: Honestly I think this version would already fit pretty well into the Kyomami pastry chef au, tbh. I can see her being adopted taken in as an apprentice by Kyoko and Mami.

Doppel Kyoko: Instead of girls making wishes to become magical girls, girls make wishes to become witches. They harvest emotions from humans and convert it into magical energy to give to the incubators.

Darkness Kanagi and Darkness Mitama: Instead of the Wings of Magius, the magical girls of kamihama are instead antagonized by Kanagi and Mitama. the wings of magius are instead a secret resistance instead of a cult.

Demon parade Kagome: Magical girls are instead called “Spirit Guides” and their duty is to guide souls to the afterlife.

Valentine’s Sudachi: Magical girls are instead called “fairies” and are born from the love some pours into a sweet. When the sweets are done, the fairy hatches from the sweet and scampers away before anyone can see them. They are tiny people who protect humans and improve their lives from the shadows. (Think the borrowers for comparison). Sudachi in particular was born from a batch of cookies, and she lives in a mousehole in Yozuru and Livia’s apartment.
