“It’s so... beautiful.” Supervillain smiled, fingers tangled in hero’s hair, forcing their head to look at the city they’d failed, they destroyed.
“Truly better than anything I’d ever imagined, who knew you were capable of this? You’d been holding back so much.” And it was glorious to watch them crumble.
Supervillain eased their grip, instead massaging hero’s scalp and combing hands through their gritty hair. “You’ve been so good for me, making my vision come to life. We can build this city now, shape it into something better, safer, where people can thrive rather than get by.”
Hero shook their head, burning tears long since dried on their skin and slapping away their hand. “Was it worth it, bringing it to the ground? You know more than anyone how fear of the leader ends, and our history always repeats itself.”
Supervillain smiled, and offered hero their hand, which they begrudgingly took. They wiped at their cheeks as supervillain wrapped them in a hug, hating that they were touch starved enough to enjoy it.
“It is worth it, when it’s finally just you and me. The new age of evolution,” supervillains face lit up, pulling away and gesturing at the rubble they stood in, the violence. “You don’t have to worry about hiding what you are now, worry about hurting anyone. We can watch as it starts again, from the beginning. Side-by-side.”
“There is no new beginnings here.” Hero whispered, shaking their head and sitting back down into the rubble. “It’s- there’s too many memories, to many deaths. I’m not like you, it still hurts to watch faces fade from my mind, and there’s still too many fresh ones... God, What have I done.” Hero cried again, fresh tears trickling down their face and wiping them away before they could fall.
Supervillain sat down next to them, yet again hating the cold comfort they provided, and the arm draped over their shoulder. It was too loving, too passionate, too easy to break down under.
“Did we really need to cause all this chaos? All this suffering and pain just to achieve your Millenia long goal? It’s mayhem, it’s unnecessary, it’s... so cruel.” They buried their head in supervillains shoulder, not willing to let the sobs be heard by no-one. Because there is no-one. And there wouldn’t be for a very, very long time. Maybe long enough for the hero to become just like super-villain themselves.
They didn’t remember how it happened, but it was the first time hero had ever broken, become so consumed and driven, and now it was all gone, for good this time, and it was hero’s fault. It burned bitterly in the back of their throat.
Supervillain soothed them gently, hands still covered in grit and dust, hands free of blood for once. They dropped their chin on hero’s head, slowly swaying back and forth as they just sat.
“Hm, maybe you’re right.” They spoke softly. “There’s too much death here, for now. We have to wait, be patient before building the new world.” They pressed a butterfly kiss into hero’s head, finally satisfied after all this time, hero under their wing and the world their to sculpt. It was intoxicating. “But it will be here. Life stems from death... and I can tell this place will thrive.”
Hero tilted their head to the rubble, the setting sun on a red sky and the dirty clouds dusted a pale pink. Their breath caught as they saw it, through the death, through the pain, through the madness and mayhem.
“It really is... beautiful.” Hero whispered, smiling to no-one, relaxing into supervillains side.
“We can make it beautiful.”
