Reuben Sutherland’s Kaleidoscopic Doodles
Reuben Sutherland is from New Zealand and is job is ‘mostly making arty graphic stuff’. He makes his gifs as part of the Audiovisual duo Sculpture for live performances. He views his gifs as ‘doodles’ just to show zoetropes and how they animate. Despite his downplaying of these gifs as ‘doodles’ they are inventive, beautiful and mesmerizing. I may even call these Art.

Happy World Octopus Day! This is a stippling drawing of the Larger Pacific Striped Octopus that my Dad drew and also studied...discovering before anyone that unlike other Octopus, they mate beak to beak among other things. Etienne Jacob: Spectacular Black & White Vortices
Etienne, a 24 year old from France working on a Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics, saw the work of Wavegrower and was inspired: He wanted to do the same kind of thing. He succeeded. Now you see his gifs all over Tumblr, and for good reason. Sure they are generative and just based on math, but they are also extremely seductive experiences for a viewer because he has a great sense of motion and design - and he makes great vortices. Why just black and white? Again, being inspired by Wavegrower, he said about other colors ‘I feel like it adds nothing, it is unnecessary’. I have to agree. His gifs are perfect for now, as is.
