the ready player one movie depicting the iron giant as just another cool fighting robot makes me mad in large part because the death of brad bird’s sister in a gun-related tradgedy is what inspired him to work on the story. pacifism, specifically anti-gun pacifism, is a huge theme of the story because of that. how ready player one is depicting the giant is disrespectful to that.

I feel like that’s kind of the point, no? Set in an unstable future where these icons of pop culture have long since been distorted and forgotten. For a work of fiction, using Iron Giant ironically like this serves the purpose well

i’d be willing to buy that if it weren’t for the fact that ready player one rides heavily off of nostalgia and recognition of old properties.

like, not to tell it’s story, but rather to give it some market appeal. i feel that if ready player one had invented it’s own pop culture icons for the world it takes place in a) we wouldn’t be talking about it and b) this idea would be easier conveyed. from what i’ve seen ernest cline doesn’t have the clout to pull off something that nuanced.

plus i don’t think the giant even appears in the book. this is warner bros trying to make bank off of a film they realized they messed up promoting 18 years ago.

It does appear in the book as one of the cool fighting robots you can choose at gate 2
