Speechless || Remi & Caleigh
Going back to sit in his booth and wait for Caleigh during the remainder of her shift, Remi picked his fork back up and started poking at what was left of his food that he’d been about to leave, not really hungry enough to eat anything, but bored enough that he’d entertain the thought. The Battery City sun was emerging between two skyscrapers nearby – he could see it through the window, and it lit up the inside of the diner in hot squares, rivalling the chilly conditioned air that blew in from vents in the wall and circulated the room.
After ten minutes or so, Remi took to watching the staff making their way around the tables, standing behind the counter, or working in the kitchen, eyes fixed on Caleigh whenever he could see her. He was itching for a cigarette, but the minutes passed quickly enough, and soon the redhead was coming towards him, work clothes discarded, bright smile on her face. She looked a little stressed, but he supposed most people did, including himself. ”Yup.” Getting up, Remi left a fifty-copper-coin on the table for his food and led the way towards the door, hands already digging in his pockets for his cigarette pack and lighter.
Outside was as hot and dry as any day in BC, and the young man paid no mind to the heat, lighting his smoke as soon as he was sure there was no one around to arrest him. ”Where d’ya wanna go?” He smiled at Caleigh, exhaling happily. “‘M down for whatever.”
"Doesn't matter," said Cal, tying her hair up in a ponytail with the elastic on her wrist. Fuckin' Battery City heat. "Anywhere that isn't a shitty diner," she added with a grin and a small snort. She'd had enough of shitty diners and burnt coffee and creepy old dudes that leered at the waitresses.
She allowed herself a glance at Remi. He looked more drawn- Tired and stressed, but otherwise, he was still they guy she'd known, she supposed.
"What've you been doin'?" She asked finally, scuffing the toe of her sneaker on the sidewalk and they walked. "'S been a while." She looked down at her feet while she waited for him to answer and tried to balance on the curb, walking tow to heel before she gave up.
