feminist killjoy hours again, what the actual fuck is “weird girl literature” and how often do we acquiesce to the latest degrading gendered advertising campaigns
Women did not fucking pioneer horror, thriller, and science fiction as we know it for publishing to infantilize it into a high school phase
is Stephen king “weird boy literature”? Or does he get to be an adult horror novelist?
#also I’ve noticed weird girl lit is overwhelmingly white. you can write a book abt a white woman reacting horrifically to external forces#(such as patriarchy) and its quirky weird girl lit!! but a main character of color. no that’s horror now.#just to add another layer to the infantilization aspect. via @hampdencollege -
I’m really glad you raised this as well! Was touching on it in the comments but this is another notable aspect to it; the weird girl is a usually-thin, usually-cis, and usually white creation - the name evokes an infantilized fragile outsider that fits ‘Tim Burton’s aesthetic’ in all senses of the phrase, who curbs and defangs her aberrances from social norms (usually, her reaction to patriarchy) via the concessions of fitting these standards, via still being pretty and palatable and privileged, and it’s no mistake - patriarchal infantilization of women is of structured around notions of innocent white womanhood. The literature by and about woc and their experiences is relegated often to being simply novels About Race and not gender as well no matter how that factors into the narrative from what I’ve seen

Andrea Joyce Heimer (US-American, 1981) - A Bear Sighting Was The Most Coveted Sighting Of All, For Its Danger And Hulk, And For Its Rarity. One Night While We Slept In My Grandmother's Tin Can Trailer, A Bear Got Tangled In The Brush Pit For A Time And We Listened To It Grumble In The Dead Of Night. It Occurred To Me The Bear Was Having An Off Day. My Grandmother Slept With A Loaded Gun, But She Always Pointed Out It Was For The Two-Legged Animals, Not The Four-Legged Ones. I Used To Have A Dream Where Bears Clambered Through My Stables. Now, I Have Two Bears Who Come To My Yard. I Tell Them Things And They Go On Their Way, And I Go On Mine. These Are Just Some Thoughts I Have On Bears. (2026)

having anti role models is a beautiful thing. it's not easy to live up to someone else's behavior but it is easy to lasso yourself into behaving right when you realize you're reminding yourself of the worst person youve ever met in your entire life
